Frankenthon Monster Marathon
Cedar Park, TX
Saturday, October 22, 2011
7:00 AM

The marathon is the brainchild of Frank Livaudais, a very well-known and respected long-distance runner at Austin. It is a marathon created by a runner for runners. It is capped at 150.

This was the 3rd edition of the marathon, which enjoyed an excellent organization. Packet-pick-up was on Friday afternoon/evening, as well as the morning of the run. Each runner received a nice long-sleeved technical shirt & a pair of running socks.

The race was held on the trail of the beautiful Brushy Creek Park at Cedar Park (a north of Austin suburb). Temperature ranged from low 60s to high 80s. It was overcast during most of the morning hours which was quite helpful. We ran the same loop 3 times. There were some hilly sections. The surface was a combination of pavement & crushed granite. The footing was good. The mile markers were accurate. There were water/sports drink stations at approximately every other mile, staffed by cheerful volunteers. Each finisher received a nice medallion. There were plenty of recovery food items and drinks, as well as massage therapists. In short, I doubt if there is a marathon runner who would not enjoy running this marathon.

There were 133 finishers (82 males, 51 females) in the average finish time of 4:39:50. The winning times were 2:37:14 (overall male), 3:15:10 (overall female), 3:18:55 (masters male), & 3:43:15 (masters female). There was an 11-year-old girl who ran the marathon in 4:01:03!

First the good, then the bad.

It's a beautiful course, along a small lake and a creek in the Texas Hill Country. The course is lined with cedar and oak, and goes over a few slightly rolling hills. There are park facilities available at the start/finish and portable toilets on the course. Parking is easy. The course is a triple loop, so you get to see your time on a clock a couple of times during the race. The race staff was almost uniformly polite and helpful.

I say almost uniformly helpful because one of the aid stations was a poster child for why high school kids should not be left alone to man a water station. Because of the way the course was set up (a triple loop), you passed one of the water stations six separate times during the course of the race. During the race, it was warm and 80+ percent humidity. The first time I passed this station, there was no water out and no one manning the station, just tables with water coolers. The second time I passed it, the kids working this station somehow got it into their heads that it their job to ration water. After I consumed approx. three ounces of water, I asked for some more, and was refused. The third time I went to the station, I had to stop and ask for water several times because the kids were farting around instead of handing it out. Needless to say, if you are going to run this race, you should consider taking along some of your own water.

A shame that one bad water station marred an otherwise good race.

This is the perfect little marathon. Yes, it's small and there are not a lot of spectators, but everyone out on the course is full of support for the runners. It's an old school race for folks who just like to run and don't need a band to listen to every half mile. It's so well organized, and the entry fee is very reasonable and the goodies you get are fantastic. Very nice shirt, medal, and socks! I ran it to try and get a BQ and I did. The volunteers are all runners themselves and know how to keep you moving quickly through the aid stations. There is really nothing this race could improve on. Frank the RD has done a great thing to offer the Austin area such a gem of a race.

2010 race was my first marathon. Since then I have finished Dallas, Houston and San Antonio. Frankenthon will always be my favorite! Can't wait till October.

Enjoyed the 2nd year as much as the first. Just love the course layout. You get to pace yourself with other participants on the out-n-backs and it's a spectator's dream - especially those with families.

I entered this event 'last minute' as we were visiting Texas and I was looking to qualify for Boston. I was SO impressed with the organization of the race, volunteers, loop course, post-race food, festivities, and support from vendors, especially the massage group. Frank put on a terrific 'grass roots' race that was welcoming and a breath of fresh air from those events with a sea of thousands of runners! The course itself was nice, 3 loops, so it was good to keep track of times/splits, and also helped mentally to support/loved ones on a regular interval. I highly recommend this event to both locals and those looking to travel to race a marathon. I had a wonderful experience, fast time, and enjoyed the Texas hospitality!

"Great low key race!" (about: 2010)

This race is a great low-key race. The field is small, but the perks are better than at most large races. The race swag is great (nice shirt, socks, finisher's medal) and the after race food rocks! It is a 3 loop course which really helps to break up the race into more palatable 8+ mile chunks, rather than trying to focus on 26 miles. The race was very well organized and very well supported. I will def. do it again.

The best organized marathon I have ever run. Love the shirt, socks and medals and all the food afterwards. Aid stations were great. The course was a beautiful place to run. Would definitely do it again.

"2nd year - not bad but challenging" (about: 2010)

We weren't favored with the nice weather. The course was in better shape than last year as it looks like they fixed the drainage so there was no water on the sidewalks. The concrete sidewalk pounds on your joints after a while. The early-morning humidity and the heat were huge challenges. Many folks went out too fast and faded near the end. I suggest better placement of the aid stations. The two end stops could be placed a half-mile or so up the course so that we could hit each of them twice. Ice would have been a good idea. The aid station by the dam mixed the Gatorade too weak. Still, a darn fine race and much better than a few other more established marathons I have run this year. Love the post-race pizza, massages and the 3-loop timing. Keep at it, Frank!

"Great 1st Marathon Experience" (about: 2010)

This was a great experience for my 1st marathon. The 3-loop course set-up allows for the spectators to see you multiple times throughout the race. It was a small race so it felt like there was less pressure, and all of the runners were very supportive as you saw them many times during the race. I enjoyed it thoroughly and BQ'd in my 1st marathon.
