Michael Wardian - Marathoner+++ (100K+100Miles)
It seems like Michael Wardian must be our favorite topic these days - and maybe that's true... To us, Michael represents the idea that nothing is impossible. He is fast and he just keeps on running and running and running. We already reported on Wardian's sixth place finish last week at the 100K World Championships (at a 6:40 pace for 62 miles). We neglected to mention that Wardian told us about the blisters he developed which almost stopped him from running. Most might take a break after a hard 100K, but the schedule didn't allow that and seven days after running the 100K championships, Wardian was on the starting line of one of the hardest and most storied races on the planet - the Western States 100-Miler (much at altitude, with terrible hills on a tough course). Despite the blisters (which got worse), Wardian ran for more than 19-1/2 hours, finishing 15th at the Western States 100-miler just over three hours behind the winner (Hal Koerner won in 16:24), and ahead of another 225 finishers and countless participants who did not finish. We can only guess how Wardian would have fared if he were fresh for the run - but the point is that here is an athlete who will not shy away from a challenge, will always do his best and is continuing to grow in the sport. We should all learn many lessons from Michael Wardian - doesn't a marathon sound easy now?

For those in need of a geography lesson, Eritrea is a country of approximately 5 million, in the Northeast corner of Africa bounded by Sudan on the West and North, Ethiopia (from which it gained independence in 1993), and Djibouti on the Southeast.

100K World Championships - Wardian Sixth, Women First
One of our favorite marathoners (who also happens to be USA 50K, 50 Mile and 100K National Champion), Michael Wardian, finished 6th at the 100K World Championships in Torhout Belgium. Wardian, who was ninth at the 2008 World Championships improved his overall position and set a new PR completing the multi-loop course in 6:53:17. For those who want the math, that is an average mile of 6:40 for 62 miles, or the equivalent of 2.4 back-to-back 2:54 marathons... The American women won the team competition led by Kami Semick who ran away from the women's field to win in 7:37:23. Devon Crobsy-Helms was second American and fourth overall in 7:59:17 and Meghan Arbogast finished fifth in 8:04:28) to complete the scoring for the American women's team victory.

Deena Kastor to run 2009 BofA Chicago Marathon - Plans to run sub 2:18:00
Deena Kastor - the American marathon record holder (London 2006 - 2:19:36) and 2004 Olympic Marathon bronze medalist - has announced that she will be running the 32nd Annual Bank of America Chicago Marathon on October 11th. In a press conference, Kastor stated that she hopes to run sub-2:18:00 and that Chicago is the place to do that. Later she stated that anything can happen in a marathon and that her goal might not be reached - but that she will be in shape to do that. En route to Chicago, Deena said she will be running the New York City Half Marathon in August - but is training for the marathon. Kastor set an American Marathon record in London in 2003 (2:21:16); came to Chicago to try to break 2:20 in 2005, settling for the win in 2:21:25. Kastor broke 2:20 for the only time and set the current American record of 2:19:36 winning the 2006 London Marathon. The 2009 Chicago Marathon capped their registration at 45,000 registrants and will expect 34,000 to 37,000 starters.

ING New York City Marathon Selects Lottery, Poised for Largest Field Ever
The New York City Marathon has announced their lottery results and with that the largest field ever - the event will be accepting 58,000 registrants in the expectation of having 42,000 runners make it to the starting line. Event with those big numbers, the probability of getting in through the lottery has been declining over the years. For 2009, the odds were roughly one in five - approximately 10,000 runners accepted out of nearly 50,000 lottery applicants. Charities have been allocated 6,800 guaranteed spots for which runners will be required to raise at least $2,500. Another couple of thousand spaces are reserved for VIPs, sponsors and other "special" cases; 17,000 spaces are set aside for international runners - making the NYC marathon one of the most cosmopolitan of races; and 20,000 slots were given to thsoe meeting one of the criteria for guaranteed entry. That's a lot of runners who will run - but today we've mostly been hearing from many of the 36,000 who were turned down in the lottery. To them we say: "there are lots of other great Fall marathons out there - find one!"
