Paris Marathon Dominated by Ethiopian Runners

April 8, 2024

The 2024 Paris Marathon witnessed a historic double as Ethiopian runners claimed victories in both the men's and women's races. Mestawut Fikir and Mulugeta Uma emerged as the champions, with Fikir earning a win in what was her debut marathon.

In the women's race, Mestawut Fikir crossed the finish line in a remarkable time of 2:20:45. Fikir's victory was hard-earned, as she edged out her fellow Ethiopian Enat Tirusew by just three seconds. The race also saw the return of Kenya's Vivian Cheruiyot, a former Olympic champion, who secured the third position with a time of 2:21:46, marking her comeback to marathon racing after five years.

On the men's side, Mulugeta Uma won with a dominant performance, completing the marathon in 2:05:33. In the latter stages of the race, Uma was able to pull away from Kenyan runners Titus Kipruto and Elisha Rotich. Kipruto finished closely behind Uma, trailing by 15 seconds, while Rotich, the pre-race favorite and course record holder, crossed the finish line more than a minute later.

Fikir and Uma's victories mark a historic achievement for Ethiopia, giving the nation its first double in the Paris Marathon in five years. This was also the first time either runner had competed in this marathon event. Their victories demonstrate Ethiopia's current depth in the marathon, which includes Kenenisa Bekele.

In just a few months, the city of Paris will host another highly competitive marathon. Today's top marathoners will represent their country as they compete for an Olympic medal during the upcoming Summer Olympic Games. The men's marathon is scheduled for August 10th, followed by the women's race on August 11th.
