"Success story-Marathon & personal" (about: 2001)

At 60, this was just my third Marathon. This running experience was as great as the other two. The mental and physical challenge of a marathon is absolutely teriffic.
At about 3 miles I hooked up with Andrea running her first Marathon. About 15 miles later I slowed and she gradually pulled away from me. On the next Monday I was pleasantly surprised to receive an e-mail from her thanking me for helping her enjoy a successful run. The way you can psychologically bond with a stranger is one of the remarkable things about these demanding races.

I was impressed by the course, it's almost but not quite as flat as advertized, except for the loop at about mile 21. Ugh! For me there is something demoralizing again seeing runners who passed you earlier. On the other hand, I loved the 'little' downhill at the finish. It felt so good; like I managed a strong fast finish.

The organization was excellent. From the pre-race to the water stations, to the finish line, everything went extremely well.

Thanks to everyone involved in making this work so well. I'm looking forward to running again next year! :-)

"1st marathon - had a great time" (General Comments)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

This was my first marathon, and I really enjoyed it. Everyone involved was very supportive and weather was great. Course was great for a 1st timer, but somewhat monotonous and seems like it could be rough in hot weather (almost no shade) Overall great though - can't wait for next year.

"Finally, a Rochester marathon!" (about: 2001)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 4

I am not a marathon runner by any means. I ran my first marathon four years ago in Buffalo. It was a good experience. Nevertheless, I wanted my next one to be a bigger one, like the one in New York City for example. But, living in Rochester, when I heard there was going to be one here, I said this is it. I know how we can put on a show here in Rochester, and did we ever? The OSM was a great marathon that even the sky blessed us with great weather. I am recommending it already to anyone who wants to run a marathon.

"Impressive Debut" (about: 2001)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 3

Greg Brooks did a great job of putting on the inaugural race. The volunteers were great - very supportive and plenty of them. All the bases were covered: well marked course, plenty of water stations, 3 gel stations, bicycle escorts and great post-race eats. The course is flat and very fast. I would recommend it for anyone looking for a PR. This was my third marathon, and I had a PR by over 24 minutes. It is a small race (390 this year) but I never felt alone on the course and it made the start very smooth. To top it off, the weather was perfect this year. The course is rural, so the crowd support is sparse, but that did not detract from the race experience.

"OSM was perfect for our 1st ever marathon!" (about: 2001)

Super job by Karen, Greg, Beth & all the support crew & sponsors from start to finish. We look forward to next year's race and foresee many more entrants & spectators in the years to come. The water stops seemed to appear just when they were needed, the support cyclists were very encouraging(as were spectators & other participants), the food at the end was great. The finish line photos were also much appreciated!

"Outstanding" (about: 2001)

This was a well planned and executed Marathon. Plenty of volunteers, lots of gatorade & water. I would like to thank all the safety people on bikes some whom peddled more than 70 miles to support us runners.
I look forward to running this race again next year.

"Great first marathon!" (General Comments)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

A very well organized race with enthusiastic participants, supporters and organizers. There were more than enough water stops where the wonderful volunteers helped to cheer the runners on. Since most of the course was alongside beautiful country roads the number of spectators was not that high, but the ones that were out there did a great job (especially those two guys on bikes, Bryan and Mary's husband........ Thanks again. You two helped many more people than us!!). The weather was absolutely gorgeous; clear blue skies and light wind in around 50-60 degree weather. Could not have asked for a better day! NY state was in peak bloom with colorful apple trees and the greenery was spectacular. Definitively a must for nature lovers. We will be back! Excellent organization for being a first marathon. Both thumbs up for the Arthritis foundation and the sponsors. Next year will be even better!

"great home town race" (about: 2001)

COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 2

I ran this race pushing my 3&1/2 yr old son in a stroller. Starting dead last was really an advantage. All we did is pass other runners the whole way finishing in 3 hr 40 min. Although pushing a stroller may be somewhat physically more demanding than just running the bonding between father and son is just super and uncomparable to anything else. This in addition to all the extra support from other runners and spectators really make it easier to push a kid for 26.2 miles. A great course for this : not to many runners for our stroller to get in the way of but just enough to know that there is good competition out there.
I was thankful to have been carrying my own water supply because otherwise I would have found the water stops to few and far between.
