"Would not recommend this marathon to a first timer" (about: 2003)

COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 1

I would not recommend this marathon to a first-timer. Because of the lack of spectators, the desolate and uninspired terrain, and the misleading billing as a lakeshore marathon the course environment lacks the 'energy' to carry a first-time recreational runner to the finish line.

"CONCERNS ABOUT THE COURSE" (about: 2003)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 1

The course was very good and the staff was very friendly. The only concern we had was the fact that the inline skaters came back on the course once they fniished their very quick race. I didn't enjoy having skaters going in and out of us while running, and was a somewhat concerned for our safety.

"Excellent organization and spirit at this event" (about: 2003)

I enjoyed my experience with the 2003 Ontario Shore Marathon. The course is not flat, and is filled with gentle (but real) ups and downs. The course is rural, and gets boring. The bike marshals and volunteers were the best!! The water stops were all staffed with lots of encouraging volunteers - there was plenty of water and Gatorade available. There aren't alot of spectators, but those that venture to the race are great!! I recommend this race for anyone who enjoys a smaller race crowd and rural setting.

"Just as good the second time!!" (about: 2003)

This is the second time I have run this marathon. The support people rock! Having the bike patrol people to let you know you aren't alone is a great thing.

"Great event." (about: 2003)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 3

This is my first time running this race, and second ever marathon. The organization and course couldn't have been better. There were plenty of water stations and port-a-potties along the route, and enough bathrooms at the start so there were almost no lines before the race. Tons of food and drinks after the race and a lot of volunteers for a race this size (I think a little over 700 total for the full and half). The course was along quite country roads with excellent traffic control for the few cars that I saw. There were very few spectators as well, but this doesn?t bother me and I wouldn?t have expected it due to the location of the event.

"First Timer- I survived!" (about: 2003)

This was my first marathon ever. It was a challenge because of the distance and the WIND! Luckily the course is pretty flat and the temperature was perfect. I thought the water stations were spaced perfectly and the volunteers were enthusiastic. I thought the medical crew out on bikes were plentiful and offered positive comments whenever they zoomed by. There are a lot of open fields, which means that on windy days, you really have a battle. Running the 1/2 marathon and full marathon at the same time was nice because I ran the first 10 miles with a former student who was doing the 1/2. While there aren't too many villages to run through to get many spectators, the course is open so that if you are lucky enough like I was, your own cheering crew can get to many places along the way and give you support. There is no chip timing, so if you start at the back of the pack your time will be a bit off. All in all, I thought it was a great experience and would recommend it to anyone looking for a smaller marathon or for a nice place to do their first.

"Nice wide-open race!" (about: 2002)

This race was fun because it was very rural with wide-open spaces. I recommend it for anyone, but especially for beginning marathoners. Be sure to go for the massage afterwards!

"Everything I expected!!" (about: 2002)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 4

This was my first marathon and I dont think I could have picked a better race. It was everything I expected...very organized, a fast flat course, and plenty of volunteers. I especially liked the water stop with the hospital workers!! :) I'm looking forward to running again!

"Nice race but could have used more water stops" (about: 2002)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 4

This was my first time at the 1/2 marthon distance. This was a well run race but for me, I could have used some water between mile 10 and the finish for the half marathon, especially if the weather had gotten warmer. There wasn't any shade and the sun was out the whole time even if the weather was cool.

"In short, I liked it a lot." (about: 2002)

I like relatively small marathons, with between a few hundred and a few thousand runners, so OSM is a good match for my preference. I ran about 3:48:20, a personal PR by more than 5 minutes, in part due to the course and the weather.

The route was excellent and not nearly as pancake flat as the elevation chart shows. When I saw the sign for 'scenic overlook' somewhere around 21 miles, I decided I wasn't imagining the gentle, but real, ups and downs. I'm glad there was a bit of relief, especially the slightly downhill part to the lake front at the end. That last mile+ into the park was great for a final push.

I also generally liked the course scenery. Maybe the muddy plowed fields were a bit bland, but the many fruit orchards and small farms were attractive. There seemed to be the occasional small community along the way with pretty enthusiastic groups of 10 or so spectators. OK, not the biggest crowds, but they raised my spirits.

Water stops were well placed and well staffed. The one at mile 18 had especially supportive volunteers. I also appreciated the bike marshals riding back and forth checking on runners and expressing encouragement.

All in all, OSM was a fine race that I recommend to runners looking for a small, well-organized, scenic and fast marathon. I hope to be back next year.
