"Too big? Too humid? Too pricey? Too drab?" (about: 2009)

4-5 previous marathons | 1 San Antonio Marathon-Marathon of the Americas
COURSE: 2  ORGANIZATION: 2  FANS: 3

This was my second R'n'R Marathon, and first in SA. The porta-potty lines were enormous; they need to better assess the needs of 30,000-plus runners. More gels on the course, too, please. (Just two stations!?) Parking and logistics for the start/finish/registration were too limited, and paying $10 for expo/registration seemed just a gouge. Bad luck on weather this year; it was too humid. Perhaps they should study the weather tables for SA to see if a date later in the year would lessen the odds of such problems. The course didn't offer much in scenery; perhaps SA just doesn't have it. Plus, there were not many spectators outside of the downtown core.

Paying over $100 for this race just seemed like too much, but then again, over 30,000 forked it over. I just wonder if more of that cash couldn't have been spent better (subsidize the parking? more potties? etc.). Bands were decent, but sometimes too loud as you ran by. The concert at the end is a waste if you can't make it. How about two-tiered entry fees - with and without the concert? That could lower costs and gripes.

"Great race course, fantastic city for runners" (about: 2007)

What a great place for a marathon...everything was within walking distance from so many hotels. I had friends in like four different hotels...none of us used our cars once we got to our hotels...we walked to our pre-race meal...our post race meal...the expo...the race...and back to our hotels, and to all of our sight seeing (you'd have drive to see the missions though).

Tons of great features...a great place to start...a great place to finish. Hot food. Finisher's shirt. Small, but adequate expo...but with a strange flow as it was like in several small areas, not one large open hall.

More rest stops and police officers than you'd expect from a much larger race...but being a smaller event the motorcycle police got to know me and talked to me as they followed me the entire way through.

I loved the new route...fantastic neighborhoods, but few spectators...actually surprising very few considering this is like over 30 years old marathon. Granted, it is a new route, but still very little local support to this race...not that it mattered with all the rest stop volunteers out there.

There could have been more porta potties out there, but overall way more than adequate for the size of the race.

Running by all the missions was nice...the bicycle trail by the river got to be long, but then it did keep you away from businesses and traffic.

Too bad it will become a RNR event next year...that will change the mix of runners and probably make for some growing pains. The race works for the size right now, and we were able to get reservations for a party of 23 the week of the race for a pre-race pasta meal.

Not a must run event, but a very good event in a city that you can actually get around in on foot! You don't find that often.

"Really a GREAT RACE!" (about: 2007)

I loved this marathon. SA was my 3rd marathon and it was also my biggest race. The Team-in-Training folks provided outstanding support. Special thanks to all those volunteers at Team-in-Training! The course was pretty flat and I PR'd by 13 minutes! I'm a racewalker and I did this one in 5:01. The start at the Alamo gives you a wonderful feeling and the finish inside the Alamodome was very inspiring. The water stations were well organized. The spectators were very enthusiastic. It got pretty warm towards the end of my 5 hours but not unbearable. I will definitely do this one again. Thanks to the race organizers and volunteers for putting together a great marathon!

What a great time! I loved it. I took a training injury just 2 months before the marathon and had to walk the course. The organizers had provided for walkers to start early, which enabled everyone to finish before the course closed. The volunteers were great and the spectators were all so motivating. A few small hills to keep it interesting and lots of great scenery. Great job San Antonio!

I had a great time in San Antonio. From the race starting in front of the Alamo, with Col Travis's finest, to finishing inside the Dome, everything was really handled good. Lots of water stations, and plenty of San Antonio Police Officers. Yes, it was hot and humid. But it is what it is, South Texas. I look forward to San Antonio in 2008.

"Definitely NOT 'walker friendly'" (about: 2007)

1 previous marathon | 1 San Antonio Marathon-Marathon of the Americas
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 3

This was my 2nd Marathon and I was looking forward to it since San Antonio is my home town. On a positive note, the SA Motor-cycle Police were very friendly and helpful along the way from start to the last turn at Durango Street towards the finish as were the volunteers at each of the well supplied water stations for approximately 5 to 5 1/2 hours in all. At that point, the Street Sweepers came by clearing the cups left behind, kicking up sand, dirt, and dust clouds in our faces and body; which was an hour to an hour and a half before the '6 hour' time constraint. I was one of the Walkers (my pace was 14:57, finished at 6:29:01.6) who not only had to endure the hot and humid weather, but also breathing in all the dust that the Street Sweepers made during the last hour to hour and a half of the race. The mile markers were not clear for about half of the race, and the final stretch was not marked, making it difficult for those finishing after 5 1/2 to 6 hours or more to find the actual finish line. I would NOT recommend the San Antonio Marathon for anyone interested in walking a Marathon!

"Well organized and highly enjoyable!" (about: 2007)

Course: Started at the Alamo, ended in the Alamodome. A dull first 4 miles but then went through beautiful residential King William district and on to the Mission Park - I loved running by the river and around the old missions. Slightly downhill first 16 miles, slightly uphill to the finish. Nothing steep.

Aid Stations: exceptionally good, well stocked and manned by very enthusiastic volunteers. Never seen so many stations with gels.

Spectators: enough for me, but not comparable to Houston or White Rock.

T-Shirts: participant and finisher shirts both very pleasant

Post-race: hot and cold food, and BEER! Great to sit in the Alamodome and watch the finishers on the Jumbotron.

All together, I can find no fault with anything. I had a very enjoyable race, even though it was warmer than I would have liked. Next year will be very different, with the Rock-n-Roll circus coming to town. Glad I ran it this year.

"Pretty good, but warm" (about: 2007)

11-50 previous marathons | 3 San Antonio Marathon-Marathon of the Americass
COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 2

This race gets better each time, but the weather remains a wild card. The course is much improved from two years ago, when it was a lot of running in circles. Now it tours downtown, then goes to the Missions, along the river, then back. There is plenty of water and Gatorade, not too much crowd support, the least I remember in three years.

The race will be totally different next time, when Rock and Roll takes it over. A bigger crowd is expected, so the portions by the river will likely have to go (too narrow).

I'd just warn you that the weather is unpredictable in SA in November. It could be perfect, or it could be HOT.

"Good race, potential to be great" (about: 2007)

The race was very good despite the warm, humid weather. It got somewhat boring running along the river for several miles in the second half. Great support, tons of aid stations with lots of fluids (unlike, say, Atlanta, Chicago) and gels at each one. Start at Alamo and finish in the Alamodome were nice touches. Expo was adequate, though the website was a bit lacking. It will be interesting to see how making it a Rock-n-Roll event changes things for next year. San Antonio is a great place to visit, making for a nice little vacation trip, too. Overall, a good race that maybe could have been a little bit better.

This was my first marathon. The course was great till about miles 15-22. Then it was a long, boring run along the river. The race overall was good.
