"Great Small-Town Half Marathon" (about: 2010)

This event has a 5K and half marathon now; the full marathon is gone for the time being.

The event is held on Tybee Island, a beach resort east of Savannah, GA. The course for the half is flat, and it takes you on a grand tour of Tybee, past a light house, and through an old army base. It finishes at the beach, and the chili that they served was great, especially since it was cold and damp out. This event is held during off season, so the people who live year-round on Tybee gave great support, as well as many dogs, barking and wagging tails as we ran by. For those who are running for a fast time, this course does have plenty of turns, but for those like me who run for the joy of running, it was just a great place to run.

The weather was absolutely perfect. The race organizers were great. The course: absolutely pathetic. More twists and turns than a dime novel. Starting two races of different distance at the same time in the same place seems ill-advised. And then it was compounded by running them back into each other multiple times. At mile 7, half-marathoners are running all over slower moving 5-milers, and it's a combat sport all of a sudden. Several of the turns were two-way, coming and going, and were staffed with volunteers looking in only one direction. I don't know if this is possible, but with that spectacular beach out there, it would be really great if the beach run actually saw some of the ocean at some point. Also and this could be me, but my Garmin registered 13.25 - as did others from runners running nearby.

I ran the half on the February 7th, 2009. I couldn't have prayed for better weather or support from the spectators! The course was decent. It is limited in course options due to the fact it's on quaint Tybee Island, which isn't very large, but I WOULD run this again in a heartbeat!

I ran the half marathon and thought it was a great race. I had run Kiawah a couple of years ago and thought this one was so much better. Great course, lots of fan support, and awesome medal, t-shirt, and poster. This will be an annual event for me and my friends!

What can I say that hasn't already been mentioned? This is definitely one marathon that if you get the chance, you should do. Very nicely organized, well run, secure, excellent medal and "free" lighthouse poster, great carbo loading meal done by the church and awesome massages after the race are given. It had it all for a very low entrance fee. The weather was perfect, the route had a few turns (not as many as Rocket City), it was well marked with plenty enough water stations, and I qualified again to run Boston. My hat's off to the "Tybee islanders"; what a great place to visit and live. Savannah is nearby and a great place to play tourist, with lots of things to do. This is my 16th state, with a total of 26 marathons run, and Tybee is the place to get your Georgia state marathon.

See you in the next state!

My wife and I ran the half marathon. Tybee Island is a special place for us because we were married on the beach here almost 4 years ago.

The race was extremely well organized, the course detailed and the volunteers wonderful. My only regret was not attending the pasta event because everyone seemed to have a great time.

We will certainly run this race again and I could see it becoming an annual event for us.

I ran the half marathon for a second year in a row, and was once again very pleased! Thank you to all the race organizers, volunteers, spectators and Tybee community for an excellent race. The t-shirts are super! The post-race food was yummy and plentiful. The course is flat and fast. If you do the marathon, you do have to do a second loop. My plan is to come back and do the marathon next year.

If you are coming from out of town, definitely take time to see the squares of historic Savannah. Check out Vinnie Van Go Go's for delicious pizza. The Pink House Tavern is also a favorite spot for drinks and good food in a cozy, historic environment.

I want to add to all the positive comments about this marathon. The race director and all of the volunteers did an excellent job. The flat course, nice weather, and all of the attention to detail made all of us "out-of-towners" feel welcome. The course was full of twists and turns, but all were well marked, which was very important once the half-marathoners were done. I also appreciated how all of the potholes, etc. were marked; not very many races do that.

The only suggestion I have is to start the marathon and half-marathon together using the full width of the street. Start the 5K a little later, and allow the longer races the full area at the start. I found it congested, and it took a few miles to really feel free of the crowd.

Other than that, thanks for a job well-done and for sharing your beautiful island with a crowd of runners!

I won't repeat the details of the race. I just want to add my vote that it was one of the most enjoyable races I have experienced in a small-town venue. Consider doing a "two-fer." Stay in Savannah in the historic district as well as experiencing the beach town of Tybee Island.

I live in Atlanta and finally decided to run at Tybee. This was my 15th half marathon and I was very impressed with the organization of the race. The packet pickup was easy and the spaghetti dinner at the school was a great value for $8. You can eat at the school or carry out your dinner. We stayed at the Tybee Lights condos and were about 1/4-mile from the race start. The weather was excellent this year and it wasn't that congested at the start. There are a lot of turns on the course, but they are well marked and there are volunteers at each of them. Also, you have volunteers riding along with the runners to make sure everything is okay. A nice feature is that each pothole and bump in the road is marked with bright yellow paint. Since the course makes lots of turns it is easy for family and friends to see you several times during the race. There aren't that many spectators, but the ones that are there are very enthusiastic. The half marathon medal was a nice shell design and they had several food items to choose from after the race. I have run at Disney and Chicago and have found I like the smaller races like Tybee more than the big ones. If you stay on the island there is a small grocery store (IGA) near 12th Street. We enjoyed eating at the Sugar Shack, Ernie's, the Breakfast Club and MacElwees.
