 "Great Marathon With Tough Course" (about: 2002)
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This was my second time to run the CMM. Like most everyone, my only complaint would be the many hills. I think race officials are looking at a possible new course route next year if possible. Take out some of the hills and this could be one of the best races in the country. Volunteers are great, spectators are great, race organizers do an awesome job. I actually enjoyed this run more the second time around and will be back next year if at all possible. I think the marathon could have huge numbers of participants if the course were not so tough. The 1/2 marathon did very well this year. The city of Nashville needs to keep this event if possible. The people of Nashville are great and turn out in large numbers to support the marathon. Just be sure and do lots of hill trainig if you plan on doing this one. I did and it was still tough but I managed to knock 20 minutes off last years run. GREAT JOB NASHVILLE. | |

 "Ultima's gross, volunteers are special people." (about: 2002)
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 4 This was my 3rd marathon, and first CMM. I enjoyed the challenge of the many rolling hills and the weather was very ideal. Unfortunately, Ultima is the worst choice for a sports drink. They may claim it has complex carbs vs. 'sugary' Gatorade, but I couldn't even swallow it, and we can use the Power Gel for maltodextrin, as the makers of Ultima will claim is essential. So, great volunteers, a lot of enthusiasm along the course, and a nice congrats at the finish. I did feel that some spots along the course seemed too quiet and needed some more bands to cover these areas. Thank you. | |

"The best CMM yet!" (about: 2002)
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 I've run all three CMM's so far, and this year it was the best! Yes, the course is tough, but if you train on some hills it is manageable. The first half of the course was thick with runners because of the Half Marathon, but it thinned out as we headed into miles 13-18 in Metro Center. Metro Center gets a 'bad wrap' about it being so dull and having few spectators (the area is inaccessible during the marathon with road closings, so spectators CAN'T get back there). Personally, I enjoy that portion because your legs get a rest as it's flat terrain back there. The crowd of runners has thinned out by then, and you get some time to mentally re-charge yourself for the final 8 miles of the course. The course is as mentally challenging as it is physically challenging: Coming over the bridge and passing the Adelphia Stadium at mile 20 can really freak some people out, since you are so close to the finish line (visibly), yet you still have a 10K left to race. If you can make it to mile 23, then the hills are over and it's smooth sailing in to the finish! There's plenty of water/Ultima/gels on the course, the volunteers are excellent, and I never need my walkman on this race: the bands and fans keep you entertained. Oh yeah...I PR'd this year on this course...go figure! | |

 "A must see...." (about: 2002)
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 I only wish I could give this marathon more than 5 stars. The course was challenging, unless you are in super shape, forget about qualifying for boston here. Remember everyone is fighting the same obstacles, and enjoy the course. Excellent. Organization, in a word Fantastic. From the water stations - both sides of the road and overstaffed, to the gel stops at 10 and 19 miles - oranges and bananas from 19 in to the finish should you run low on fuel. Spectators - a block party feel throughout (small section of industrial area that wasn't really pleasant). And more bands than I could count - cheerleaders every mile. You couldn't ask for more. There is a genuine risk of this marathon not happening in the future due to funding. That would be a shame! If you are going to do one marathon next year make it the CMM! All my complaints about Las Vegas are compliments for Nashville. | |

"Great Experience!" (about: 2002)
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 I did the 1/2 Marathon - this was my first and I am certainly glad I trained on hills! I was very impressed by how well organized everything was from the expo to the finish line. Enthusiastic staff and spectators and the music really kept me going. The only dark cloud over the event was that god-awful Ultima. How about Gatorade next time? Thanks Nashville and CMM for making my first big race suce a positive, fun experience! | |

"Hills, Hills, Hills" (about: 2002)
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This was my first marathon, and found the hills challenging but doable for the first 18 miles, but after that I think they were too much for the average runner. On some of the later hills - I did not see anybody running - everybody was walking up and running down. Massages prior to race were great! crowd support great! Wouldn't want to do this course in hot weather. If you run this course prepare with doing hills at the end of very long runs. Also - the organization was very good. | |

"I came back" (about: 2002)
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 5 Thanks for adding the 1/2 marathon. Last year I ran the full but the hills, heat, and humidity made for a most unpleasant experience. I came back this year due to the availability of the 1/2 and it was my second fastest. The organization, volunteers, and support of the citizens of Nashville makes it a most enjoyable race. Don't attempt it if you have not done hill work. I do and it is still a challenge. Dump the Ultima ... it is vile!! | |

"Good race - my second and I LOVED it!" (about: 2002)
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 I'm a walker and train in the northeast suburbs of Atlanta and I found the hills to be a minimal challenge after some of the hills I've walked in my training. The organization was great, except that a couple of Ultima stations in the middle miles of the MetroCenter were out of Ultima. Although I REALLY don't like Ultima, I really needed it in those badlands! Please keep us walkers us mind when you supply the aid stations! Loved Nashville and the crowd support! | |

"Challenging but a great venue" (about: 2002)
COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 Thank you organizers for an excellent marathon. It is a hilly course but that makes the victory [to finish] even sweeter. The crowd participation was good except from miles 12 to 18. We lucked out with the weather; it would be tough in the heat!!! Nashville is an amazing venue - great entertainment, superb music. If you run this marathon prepare by doing hill training:):). Thanks again for a great marathon. | |

 "2002 rocked and rolled (over the hills)" (about: 2002)
COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 Great organization. The bands and cheerleaders were great and many locals were out in their front yards watching and cheering, even late in the course and thus the race. The weather was great; thunderstorms were predicted but no showers hit. One of my friends flew in too late to pick up his packet at the expo and Elite Racing had a 'Solutions Tent' at the start area that hooked up him and many other late-shows. The CMM website says rolling hills but the day after the race, the director was calling the course one of the most difficult in the U.S. and promising to change the course for next year. The post race concert was a great bonus and almost made the stiff price and the tough course worth it. Jo Dee Messina and LeRoy Parnell put on a very good show. I would not recommend this race to anyone as a first marathon unless you're a local or if you just have to visit Nashville. |
