WE paid extra to get into the VIP lot. No problem...until after the race. There was no support to get out of the lot!!!! It took us over an hour to exit the lot, and another 45 minutes to finally get out of a traffic jam due to 2 roads 'T'ing together. The Nashville PD we did see had their backs to the traffic, and I counted 4 near accidents in about 5 minutes. A parking lot worker asked a Nashville PD officer for help directing traffic and he responded 'Not our concern, they will get out'. Thanks for the help. I counted 8 Nashville PD officers with their back turned too busy talking to each other to care about us. DO NOT PAY EXTRA FOR VIP ANYTHING AT ANY COMPETITOR GROUP RACES, waste of money!!!! 2nd R n R event, and once again NOT ENOUGH PORTA POTTIES. There never are. I will never run another competitor group event again. Terrible organization. The expo took forever to get through as well, not nearly enough staff. Come on people. Who planned this event???

PROS; I love Nashville. Fun course. Hills were not as bad as described by others.
Cons; This was the most expensive registration fee I have paid and it was my first 'rock n roll' marathon.

I expected more for the money. First complaint. There were 45 (we counted) porta-potties at the start. There were about 32,000 runners and their families and supporters. We waited 45 minutes in line for the potty before the race and did not make it before leaving to the corral. For an extra fee you could get in line for the ' air-conditioned 'potty. Also for an additional fee $15 per person you could get a ride from the parking at the finish to the start line.
Necessary transportation is usually free at other races. Overall a 'rip off'. Make the start and finish more user friendly and quit trying to drain every last dollar out the participants.

"Half is nice, full is ok." (about: 2012)

I felt like the course was set up to gear towards the half marathon runners. The first half of the race was great, lots of water stations, bands and support. I felt that for the second half of the race, the water stations were too far apart as were the bands, especially for as hot as it was getting. I also did not enjoy staying with the halfers for over 11 miles and then passing the finish line and the halfers when there were still 11-12 miles to go. That was kind of discouraging, although the run through the park around miles 19-22 was nice and shaded. Overall, I though the organizers did an excellent job and the supporters with the hoses were much appreciated. I also saw more medical personnel present than at a lot of races and the cheer teams did an excellent job. I loved the sumo girls. The start and finish were also well organized as were the shuttles. I will definitely do this race again, but only for the half.

"This was a 1/2 Marathon event" (about: 2012)

I came to Nashville expecting a great country music marathon and I came away very disappointed because the emphasis was all on the 1/2 marathon. First, of the 31,000 runners less than 4,000 were doing the marathon. When I finished in 3:28 there were thousands and thousands of runners still coming in from the half. They had run half the distance I did at a much slower pace so it was difficult to relate to their experience. I hate to sound snobby but after completing a full marathon it would have been nice to be able to talk to some runners who had competed at the same level.
The bands and the crowd support were terrific in the first part of the course but as soon as we split off from the half, they both dropped to almost nothing. Further evidence that the emphasis was all on the half.
The volunteers along the entire course were enthusiastic and extremely supportive. They deserve the highest praise.
The race was very well organized but unfortunately it left a bad taste in a lot of the marathoners because we felt slighted.

"Couldn't Beat The Heat" (about: 2012)

The race organizers and volunteers did what they could to mitigate it. Aid stations were mostly well-stocked and there was no shortage of garden hoses manned by neighborhood groups. Still, I heard of a lot of PWs being posted, one of them my own.

Everything you've heard about the course is accurate: a couple of significant hills, a great many rollers, the first half more scenic than the second. The finishing area was logistically a bit cumbersome, and probably somewhat inconvenient for those who had family and friends waiting.

All in all a good, well-organized event. But I'd give some serious consideration to changing the date. Late April is an invitation to the sort of heat we all struggled with.

"Won't do this one again!" (about: 2012)

This was my third marathon & it was a terrible experience starting with the expo the night before in the middle of downtown Nashville. The traffic was horrendous - paid 15 dollars for parking, drunk people everywhere. They kept confusing me with other runners with similar names. I had to stand in three different lines for over an hour only to learn they had given my number to someone else!!

We didn't get anything in the packets - very barebones and disappointing considering how big the race is and how much I paid to run it. The entire expo process was just an attempt to get even more money out of racers- in addition to being the most hectic, stressful and anticlimatic expo I had ever been to.

Race day began well but as soon as the half marathoners split off (90 percent of runners) the few remaining marathoners were stranded- minimal support, hardly any music and NO SHADE!! It was blistering hot on the asphalt and the course just stayed empty, hilly, and hot for the remaining 15 miles. They shouldn't bother claiming to be a marathon & instead stick to the half.

"Slightly above average" (about: 2012)

All I have to say is 'get out if the way!!' 31,000 people out to run a rolling hills course and saw more people walking than running. I saw hundreds, if not a thousand or so, begin walking after mile 3 or 4. This made maneuvering very hard. Spent a lot of time on sidewalks or veering in and out between people who obviously selected the wrong corral. Only one GU station on the 1/2 (mile 10) and a terrible goodie bag. Course is hilly, so don't train on level ground. great crowd support. Not worth the money, but if it were cheaper I might consider doing this run again.

"Great Race" (about: 2012)

2 previous marathons | 1 Rock 'n' Roll Country Music Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 4

I though this was a well organized, wonderfully put on race. This was my second marathon and my goal was to be under 4 hours this time which I was able to do (3:54:47) despite the hills and blistering heat (it was already about 88 when I finished at 10:50 am). The hills are a challenge (especially coming from Charleston, SC where there are almost no hills) but they also give you small goals in a very long race.

There are definitely more people running the half (about 26,000 compared to 4,000 running the full) so once you hit the split point there is a lot more space and the water stops were much easier to get through.
They were absolutely prepared for the heat. Every water stop had plenty of volunteers making those transitions smooth. Based on the map I think they even may have added additional water stops to what was on the course map as well which was very appreciated near the end. Additionally they had hoses spraying water quite frequently toward the end which was great for keeping heat down.

I do have to say that the back half of the race is not as great as the front. The course is set up in three loop sorts of things, at first it is very is through the city down Broadway for a while then the first loop was very residential with lots of spectators. The second loop was the worst, it was a main high way with no shade and some pretty big hills. The last loop wasn't bad, going through some trees and what seemed like a park and around a lake. The last few miles of the race did have a slight uphill but at that point I didn't really care.

Overall I would recommend this race to anyone...I had a great experience and great race, just be ready for some hills and heat!

"Hot, hilly run through Music City" (about: 2012)

11-50 previous marathons
COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

I ran the full marathon. Once again, Rock n Roll events are geared towards the half marathoners. The weather was tough this year, hot (high 70s got into the 80s) and there is very little shade on the course. By the time we reached the half way point, a lot of the people around me were walking.

The GOOD: Well organized start and finish areas. Great medal, nice shirt. Expo had plenty of neat vendors and give aways. The first half is a great tour of the more touristy parts of Nashville. LOTS of very enthusiastic spectators. The bands on the course were fabulousa big advantage that this race has is the location, I mean, they have to pull from the local talent and in Nashville, the local talent is GOOD. VOlunteers were also great. I paid for the platinum parking and shuttle package and it was worth every penny. Zipped right past a long line of traffic to go to a reserved lot, hopped on a shuttle to a VIP tent at the start with our own porta potties and food, gatorade and gu.

The Bad: I think this race needs to be about a month earlier; I keep hearing how it is too hot or there are storms, etc. Very hillyI had heard the worst hills are in the first half, but really, they never stop. Up down, up down the entire route. Based on the rsults, there were several hundred people who finished after me, yet there was none of the highly promoted chocolate milk available at the finish. The expo was packed on Friday afternoonI got in no problem, but when I left, at 3 pm there was a line around the block to get into the building. Later aid stations were running out of water or cups or bothit was a really hot day, and like I said, there were a LOT of people coming after me; what did they do?
