There were 20-30 people hanging out by a campfire in the North Carolina woods the night before. Someone was playing a guitar. Occasional jokes. Someone calling his friend by the nickname "Goober." The collective anticipation of the morning's run.

It simply does not get better than that.

Oh, the race? As good as they get.

Any race experience - trail or road - is a result of the volunteers. Medoc has extraordinary volunteers. The trail is a blast to race on, the director is outstanding, and the race experience is absolutely superlative. I will be traveling the distance and paying whatever fee to run Medoc next year and in future years. Thank you to Michael, Frank, Scott, Ron, and all of the volunteers for making Medoc a fantastic event.

These guys put on a great race. Loved the course. Yes, all 3 loops. Loved the medal, the surprise gift for finishing, and the well stocked aid station. I will be back to run this again.

"One of the best trail marathons out there" (about: 2010)

Despite this being my second slowest marathon time ever and tripping/falling 5 times, I had a blast. This race featured perfect organization, great pre-race communication, super friendly volunteers, a not-too-technical, interesting, beautiful, single track, loop course and great schwag. Hats off to the organizers for putting this wonderful race together. I'll try to run it again next year.

"Great first trail run" (about: 2010)

I ran the 10-mile run. This was my first trail run, so I didn't know exactly what to expect. This was a nice smaller event. Some of the half marathons I have run have been almost too large. The staff was helpful and attentive. And the volunteers were great! The trail was moderately difficulty for me. I would recommend this trail run to others.

I really enjoyed Medoc. This was my first marathon. I found the trail markings and the aid stations top-notch.

"Well planned race" (about: 2010)

One of my favorite marathon because it is well planned from camping (optional) the night before the race to driving away after the race. Lots of spectator cheering spots, lots of volunteers, organizers who know you, and lots of info before the race. Course is moderate. I love it.

"A Secret Gem of a Race" (about: 2010)

This race is absolutely outstanding in all respects, and it far exceeds what is to be expected. The guys and gals who put it on offer everything: a great course; smiling, friendly volunteers; really useful awards; no surprises. It was the slowest marathon I have ever run, but one of the very best. I shocked myself by being able to hold pace and even accelerate in miles 20-24 where I usually die. It was magical, and I will never forget it.
