COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 Loved this marathon and I definitely plan to do it again. It was easy travel, with lots of options for accommodations, and seamless packet pick-up. The race course was definitely the best part of the experience 0 as it should be: Interesting scenery, mostly flat, lots of friendly runners and spectators. There weren't a lot of spectators - I guess the chilly weather had a lot to do with that - but the ones that were there were super supportive of everyone who passed. This one is definitely on my "must do again" list. | |

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 3 My first marathon!!! Other than the website (which is why I gave the "organization" 4 points), this race is a total setup for success for runners. Of special note were the volunteers at every turn. They were marvelous handlers, giving "coming attractions" of the next section of the course. Very helpful! I have a feeling I'll be comparing all others to Rehoboth for a long time. :-) The previous commenter described the course and party to a T, so I won't waste words saying the same thing. Definitely a must-do along the East Coast. | |

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 Rehoboth Beach Running Company was easy to find once you got into town. They had tents set up in the parking lot for check-in, and heated tents - as the evenings and mornings were cool. There really wasn't an expo for this event, but they did have some running stuff for sale in the store, and out in front. The marathon started 5 blocks east of the store, right up against the beach boardwalk. The boardwalk was being rebuilt, so only part of it was accessible. Still, we were right at the beach looking over the Atlantic Ocean. About 15 minutes before the start of the race, we witnessed a spectacular sunrise. The start line operation was well organized and orderly. The runners were lined up heading west. The course did a loop through town, and then went north along the shore of the ocean to a day use part of Cape Henlopen State Park. Coming out of the park, we soon entered a crushed gravel trail that continued for several miles. Coming off the trail, we passed some pretty impressive and magnificent homes, then ended up on a country road heading north. At Savannah Street we crossed a bridge over a canal and headed toward the town of Lewes. Turning southeast (I think) the ferry docks (to NJ) were on the left. After a couple of miles, we entered Cape Henlopen State Park- this time from the north. The course meandered through the paved and slightly hilly trails of the park for about four miles. There were relic cannons left over from the war that served as a reminder of an earlier use of the area. At one point closer to the exit, there was an elevated control tower-like facility from where they were directing shipping traffic on the ocean. After coming out of the state park, we back-tracked, with a couple of variations, to the gravel path. Exiting the gravel path, we were nearing the finish line. A different routing from there took us back into town, and to the finish line in front of the Rehoboth Beach Running Company. The post-race party was spectacular: Breakfast included pancakes and apple slices; and lunch featured taco salad, mini-burgers, sloppy joe BBQs, macaroni, baked beans, and more. There was an ample supply of beer and water too. I did not find any soft drinks or PowerAde drinks. And there was a Starbucks Coffee Shop right across the street (for those of us holding out until after the race for our morning brew). The aid station volunteers were awesome as usual. Gels were available at one of the second half aid stations. Weather was great. It was probably in the mid 40s overnight, near 50 at the start, and 59 about noontime. The sun was obscured by clouds much of the morning so it never got too warm. Still, it was great weather for running a marathon. This was a great marathon event, at a time of year when weather could be highly variable. Organization was great, people were friendly, the course was mostly flat, except for the hills in the state park, and the post-race event was among the best - even without the beer. The course was not all along the beach - as the Seashore Marathon name might suggest - but it was still a great course and a worthwhile marathon in a state that does not have an abundance of marathon races to choose from. |
