 "Nice but muddy and windy flat course" (about: 2013)

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 1 FANS: 4 Pros: Flat and scenic. Small field and plenty of water, Gatorade and gels at aid stations. Fine volunteer support on course. Very supportive crowd! Plenty of parking near the start. Nice beach town and great finishers medal. Cons: Pathetic organization prior to race: no one knew where was the start or bib pick up. The race website is austere and provides almost no information. At bib pick up, everyone was confused and I was not given a t-shirt, I figured they were being handed out at finish line. Trail was very muddy this year, this is no ones fault though. Few porta-potties, expect to wait 2-3 minutes to use them. Very crowded at the start, expect to pass a lot of people for the first 2 miles. Extremely crowded at the finish line tents. Some talk about lots of food, I only saw Mac and cheese and rolls, but I didn't go in as it was almost impossible (too crowded) to get in there. $130 + $10 fee for a small and simple race...quite expensive. Overall: Despite the cons, I would do the race again. I wouldn't recommend this race as a first marathon though. My opinion. | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 3 Pros: 1. Lots of volunteers and support on the course. The volunteers were upbeat positive and supportive 2. Flat and the 'trails' provided a forgiving surface and less pounding 3. Amazing after party, warm tent with LOTS of food and beer Cons: 1. Runners not appropriately seeding themselves at the start. Groups of walkers for the half marathon must have lined up right at the front creating crazy bottlenecks in the first mile. They made an announcement about this before the race but it's hard to hear announcements. They need pace signs OR better yet start the half marathon an hour after the marathon starts. You wouldn't (I hope) start a 10k and a half marathon together so why is this acceptable. Plus,as a marathoner, I don't keep or wear shirts that say half marathon on them. 2. Fan signs, this was weird, there were 7-10 signs on the course that had a$$, bi+ch & tit in them. Apparently there are people who find this motivational? I find it to be pollution and I wasn't there with young children. However,the vast majority of fans were amazing, shouting encouragement. | |

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 Love the course, people, organization. I come up from Dallas every year for this one. Just a fun, relaxed run. However, if you run for personal best, to beat everyone, this may not be for you. The route is lovely, but can get tight on the trail. | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 2 This race is a good basic, fairly no frills race. Although its price is a bit higher than you would expect for the frills of this race. 2013 was a cool (40 or so) day with a fair amount of wind. (in your face much of the time thru the first 17 or so.) The course is an out and back with a bit of an additional loop at the start. Being a coastal marathon it is mostly flat and as noted above it had the wind I would expect of a coastal race. The course looped through a couple of parks, a few neighborhoods and had a 2-3 mile stretch (each way) on a fairly wide trail. So there was a good variety of terrain on the course. Water stops were plentiful. course / marshals were well marked and placed. (this was important in the park you went thru in the mid teens as there were a ton of turns) Spectators....if you brought your own, it was pretty easy for them to see you. Otherwise, there were no significant spectators on the course. Post race...we did not stick around as were we driving right home. But if you did, there seemed to be a pretty good party going on in the tent they used for expo / post race. The expo was not much more than number pickup. Other good / bad about the race.... (1)The did seem to squeeze the course into the space as there were a number of times that you did short out and back to add mileage (2)Personal peeve...the half and the full run together for the first 9. I understand why, but is always disorienting. (3) Personal peeve #2...I ran further and paid more than the half marathon people. But I got the same shirt. (4) If you are into medals, a HUGE medal. | |

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 What a great small town race. Pretty course especially the 'trail' sections. Fun area to visit and get holiday shopping done! Packet pick up easy. After party fun great food beer and champagne cocktails right after you cross the line. Highly recommend! | |

"Well Organized Small Town Race" (about: 2013)

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 A small town marathon done right sums up this race. Very well organized from the packet pick-up (quick and easy), pasta dinner next door plus many hotel options right by the course. The amount of volunteers is amazing. Well staffed aid stations, plenty of people providing directions and the post race spread was superb (no stale bagels/bananas for food - try burgers and beer). The only con would be some areas of the course where there were short out and backs to make the distance (1/10th mile for example). They seem out of place when running a long distance. A very well run race and worth the trip. Plan to come back again for this one. | |

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 I have now run marathons in 22 states and the only after party that comes close to this one is Little Rock. A smaller, very well organized marathon with some of the nicest volunteers I have met. The course is beautiful and the town is fantastic. Never ending 'real' food and craft beer at the finish, in a heated tent no less. The shirt and the medal are top notch, even an exchange table for the shirt sizes. So many quality restaurants just steps from the venue, Rehoboth is fantastic! A must do for 50 Staters! | |

Last year I finished the same time and there was plenty to eat. This year it was gone. Have the half on a separate date or hold back some food for those of us busting out 26.2 miles! Not coming back! | |

COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 3 FANS: 4 I have been thinking abut this for a while. I appreciate the opportunity to run and see different parts of the country but this race just does not have it. There were very tight turns, a narrow trail that got crowded as the other runners came back through, a boring run through a subdivision. Worse, they ran out of gatorade at the later stops (I was by no means a back of the packer) and the volunteers at the waterstops were (at times) joking with one another and not attentive. The police were cranky at the start. It was by no means as enjoyable as I had hoped. |
