"Great inaugural race" (about: 2004)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 Big-D Texas Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

This was my 19th marathon. The preparation for this inaugural race by the race directors was excellent. The enthusiastic description and features got me interested and I signed up. The idea of names on runner's bibs and medals for the top 100 finishers were bonus features.

High winds on the preceeding day had us all concerned. And the wind was still howling when I awoke on race day. However, the 3 H's (heat, humidity and hills) became more significant to me on this day. I even heard the race renamed in mid-race the Texas Giant (referring to the local 6-Flags roller coaster). But, don't get me wrong, marathoners love a challenge and today was it.

The aid stations were well run (including plenty of announcements of what they had, 'Water in front, Powerade in the rear,' just how we want it), many spectators took advantage of the names on bibs and it was a great boost to hear people call your name, and we the name announcement on the PA system at the finish and the placement of the water and Powerade table right at the end of the finish chute were all great. No looking around for liquids. Furthermore, the spectators lining the finish area were very enthusiastic which makes for a great race memory.

Great job.

"Good race with great support" (about: 2004)

I ran this race yesterday and the aid stations and course support were great. They were all fully stocked (I'm slow, so I saw them after hundreds of other racers had already been there) with drinks and some snacks. The crowd support was somewhat sparse but always very supportive and encouraging. Also, the race had a small field (less than 1000) which is a nice change.

"Wonderful Job For This New Marathon" (about: 2004)

4-5 previous marathons | 1 Big-D Texas Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 3

Just completed the Big-D Texas Marathon in Dallas today. Had a good time.

I must applaud the organizer for pulling this off so well. This is a well run marathon, from registration to packet pickup to pre-marathon get-together to the marathon itselt and finally to the post-marathon celebration. The website has all of the information I needed to get around Dallas, even though I don't go there much. It would be nice if they can suggest a few more hotels/motels, but that's easy to add.

The T-shirt is wonderful, as well as the BIG finisher metal. They even do this 'Top 100 Finisher' special metal, which is really fun to brag at my friends. The police officers were very helpful, so that, even though a majority of the course involved street racing, I felt very safe from traffic.

The course is a bit challenging, more hills than I expected. With every street marathon, there are plenty of potholes and bumps, but it's no worse than any other marathons I've run. It is a nice scenic course, with lots of lake view and neighborhood, including some that appears to be in the million-dollar neighborhood. The crowd is very small, evidently there was not much advertisement in Dallas area as many drivers asked what this race was.

I have a few small complaints that hopefully will make this marathon better in the future. There are a lot of water stations, but a few of them can be spaced out more evenly. The Powerade is a bit watered down, and no one was handing out Gu. The streets weren't marked clearly at times so we were not sure which sides of street to run on.

A finisher T-shirt for marathon finishers would have been even nicer. Also, I find it very disappointing that there are no souvenirs to buy, as I always had made it a tradition of purchasing a sweatshirt and marathon pin for the marathons I've run. I hope that we get a marathon result book. Also, not enough photographers and not enough port-a-potties.

Lastly, my complaint is the starting time. We were very fortunate that the weather was overcast and a bit misty. As a result, the temperature never got too hot today and was in fact near ideal for marathon. I live in Texas and know how hot we can get down here. It would be nice if the starting time is 6:30 AM for a March marathon in Texas, so people can finish earlier and are at lower risk of prolonged heat exposure. However, all of these are minor problems that will no doubt improve next year. These should not distract anyone from wanting to run this otherwise well organized marathon.

In short, I think this is a very good marathon and will recommend it to all those considering a marathon in Texas. Good job to everyone involved in making this happen! I will definitely consider running this marathon again!
