"Where was the water?!?!?!?!" (about: 2006)

Okay, so I know that we have hot days in Dallas... and so should the race director! It was extremely hot and humid! I think that there was water about every 2.5 miles. I was SO DEHYDRATED and I only did the half! I even took some water from a guy on the side of the road (not an official water stop) and I kept asking everyone (police officers, spectators...) when the next water stop was. I will probably never do this race again. Stick to the White Rock Marathon if you want to do a marathon in Dallas.

"Great course but more organization needed" (about: 2006)

I was really surprised by the course... there were a lot more hills than I anticipated. Since I live south of downtown Dallas, I train on lots of inclines and hills, so it wasn't a problem. It made it fun that it was so challenging. Could use more pre-race organization and better food after the race. I really was craving a PowerBar and some oranges... baked potatoes just didn't sound appetizing after running in 80+ degree heat. I definitely think this is a race that will improve over time.

"Horrible organization" (about: 2006)

I forgot to add something that is just horrible and that was that I was almost hit twice by cars because the police weren't controlling traffic very well and there are not barriers on the streets to keep cars off of the streets we were running on. One of the two times a car came speeding right at me I moved off the road.

"The WORST MARATHON" (about: 2006)

I would not recommend this marathon for new marathon runners because this is not a good example of a good marathon. It was near 80 degrees out, which for any runner is horrible and on top of that they had water stations every 2.5 miles if you are lucky. There are no fans out at all. I come from Houston, and Houston has the greatest marathon and the Big D Marathon was horrible. All of my marathon times have been between 3:19-3:38 and I just walked from mile 9 because I hated it. Before the race started they ask how many runners had run this in the past and only a few dozen people raised there hand, which just shows how bad this marathon is.

It was unusually warm, which made me very happy to take a sharp left before going around the lake and following the half route!

This marathon was very tough. I think that was mostly because I was expecting it to be (as the weather channel had said) cloudy all day with rain, and instead it was about 94 degrees when I finished without a cloud in the sky. My legs cramped up around mile 17, but that's my fault. I had to walk up the hills and run down from then on, but it looked like everyone else was doing the same.
Now that I have made it sound so bad, I still finished, and jumped and clicked my heels when I did (by the way, I wouldn't recommend this if your legs are cramping up), and with this kind of course, finishing made me feel like 'more of a man' than on some flat course where I had record timing.
I would suggest starting the course earlier. I know it was on daylight savings time, but I was so excited I hardly slept anyway. I would be ready to go as early as you would have it.
And one more thing...the thing I felt most strongly about. There were ONLY 3 KEGS OF BEER for the finishers!!! The beer was out after ONE CUP of beer for me. That is what I use as motivation to finish. Now maybe this is because I am from Louisiana, but that is just unacceptible!
Other than that, I loved it! Great job.

"Hotter than hell!" (about: 2006)

4-5 previous marathons | 1 Big-D Texas Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 3

Temperature at the start was around 70, and probably rose into the mid-80's by noon - making this an extremely difficult race (for me at least). In the future, the organizers should consider having a 6 a.m. start rather than 8 a.m.

The race was otherwise very well organized. The course was nice, but had some steep hills and strong headwinds at points. Spectators were few, but very supportive. There was lots of good food at the post-race party.

By the way, I don't think the advice that was given regarding hydration (drink one small 6-oz. cup of fluids at every aid station, approx. 2 miles) was appropriate on this day with such high temperatures.

A few hills - nothing major. Very hot - between 85 and 90 degrees I think. Water stations every 2 miles consistently. Lots of fans/volunteers/supporters to cheer you on. Great experience for a first-timer.

"On the verge of being a really good marathon" (about: 2006)

3 previous marathons | 1 Big-D Texas Marathon
COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 2

This is almost a really good marathon; if the organizers keep moving forward it could be a good one.

The negative: If you are from a flat area, the course is insanely hilly and tough. If you are from the Dallas area or Austin, or anywhere with hills, according to the runners I talked to from those areas anyway, the hills weren't too bad. Some of the areas on the course weren't clearly marked, and I even saw a few runners go the wrong way. A little more in the packet would've been nice, and a finisher's shirt would've been very good (I'm a sucker for the free finisher stuff). The lines for packet pick-up were pretty long. Some of the roads were open to traffic; while the traffic was not heavy, those running with headphones had a problem hearing the cars. This is definitely a race to leave the iPods at home. The first half of the course was beautiful running along the lake. The second half was hilly and very bland, running through a maze of neighborhoods that all looked the same. Also, the water stations were placed pretty far apart.

The positives: With the scenic first half, and just trying to bring more to the race (i.e., finisher stuff, spectators, expo) the race could really move up to what Houston, Austin, and Run The Rock are.

"Beautiful Course, Great Water Stations and Support" (about: 2006)

1 previous marathon | 1 Big-D Texas Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 5

This was my first marathon and I thought they did a great job. The water stations were great with water, PowerAde, candy, oranges, and hoses. They also had great supporters all along the way that entertained you and cheered you on. The hills were not as bad as I thought they would be. They are typical Dallas hills. Nothing extreme. The weather in the morning was great in the 70's, but warmed up around 11:00 to high 80's. The entire course is beautiful! I would run this marathon again.
