"It was a great first marathon for me!" (about: 2000)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 1

This was my first marathon. Didn't experience the intimidation of 5,000+ runners...but on the flipside, you're pretty much running all by yourself. It was a small race, approx. 250 to 300 runners. It was a double loop. The spectators that you did see (mostly at the water stops) were a welcome sight (especially the water stop that had the Vaseline...I would have paid that guy $100 if he had asked me too!)
The weather was great. I think I'm hooked! Houston was supposed to be my first marathon (in January)...I was glad I ran BR so I could get the 'jitters' out of the way and will be able to really enjoy Houston. Thanks to all of those who put on a great event.

"Early Start, Flat Course" (General Comments)

To clarify Minneapolis's comments, the course is 2 laps of the same loop. For those who want it, post-race beer is available. Conditions can brighten up and warm up in a hurry.

"Small Race with Fun Spirit" (General Comments)

2-loop course around Baton Rouge lakes / LSU campus; 1/2 marathon concurrent. Appx. 80 finishers in 1999. Early start might compel one to have both reflective vest and sunglasses available. Wacky entry form, but race organization not frivolous. Post-event food includes alligator meat and gumbo. Course essentially flat with one overpass (crossed twice). Moderate amount of parking next to start / finish if you get there reasonably early. Sufficient lodging within 10 min. Refreshments available during night-before packet pickup. Course not closed to traffic, but early start and monitoring are decent. Some company with other joggers and walkers, particularly in campus areas. Other than supporters for runners, half-marathoners, and staff/volunteers, there are few spectators. Goody bag, aid, and amenities not bad for a race this size.
