Winning time fast, not fastest in Maine Marathon
(Portland Press Herald) Emily LeVan winning time of 2:47:38 in the 11th Sportshoe Maine Marathon was the fastest time for a Maine woman on Maine soil. But the state record for the marathon still resides with New Hampshire runner Karen Dunn who set the state marathon record of 2:41:03 in 1982.
Emily LeVan, the 29-year-old Bowdoin graduate from Wiscasset who won Sunday's 11th Sportshoe Maine Marathon, did so in the fastest time for a Maine woman on Maine soil.
But LeVan's time of 2 hours, 47 minutes, 38 seconds was not the state record for a woman in the marathon.
That record, now more than two decades old, belongs to Karen Dunn, who was an undergraduate at the University of New Hampshire when she won the 1982 Paul Bunyan Marathon in Bangor in 2:41:03.
Now married and working as a college professor in Ohio, Karen McCracken produced her record time in her debut marathon. Joan Benoit Samuelson of Freeport, holds the marathon records in three states: California, Oregon and Washington, but not Maine.

And No One Even Saw Her Coming in Maine
(Portland Press Herald) Emily LeVan's goal for the Maine Marathon was simply to break 3 hours. Levan, who has no coach or training partners, blew past her goal time to a woman's state record of 2:47:48. The time was good enough to take third overall but more importantly it got her an invite the the 2004 Olympic trials in St. Louis.
