"No more January races, please!" (about: 2004)

4-5 previous marathons | 2 Charlotte Marathons

The only thing I can say for the weather is that at least it wasn't raining and 33 degrees like in '02! Both times I've run this race, I've felt that the crowd support would be much better if it wasn't the dead of winter. How about March or October? On a more positive note, I must say that the scenery, crowds, and the overall ease of getting to and from the start line were much improved from the Davidson to Charlotte route. It was also much easier for my husband and parents to drive around and see me (in five different spots!). However, the organizers might something a little different near the end to avoid the huge hills. Even seeing the course elevations the day before didn't quite prepare me mentally! That being said, I still got a Boston qualifying time, and I thought all of the volunteers were great. I hope to see the race return in '06!

"A cold day and a tough course" (about: 2004)

It was marathon #151 - windy and cold. I ran the hills OK and in the end got third place in my age group. I was pleased and though I could not stay for the awards, I sent in the required $10 for postage. Well here it is mid-May and no response except my cancelled check. It left me disappointed...

"No potty" (about: 2004)

Although cold, it was January. But no bathrooms? Yikes. I saw things I did not expect to see. Loved the course and loved the crowd. Great support! Organization was generally good, but gets low rating for no bathrooms.

Well organized with lots of volunteers. I was very impressed with the positive attitudes of everyone! Fun to be a part of it and I'm hoping to be in another.

"Great Spectator and Runner Support" (about: 2004)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 4

This was my first Charlotte Marathon. Moving the course solely into Charlotte guaranteed me as a participant. It was cold enough that I never discarded any of my planned drop-off clothing. There seemed to be spectators, volunteers, and cheerers ever couple hundred yards throughout the course, which was fantastic considering the size of the race. I should have prepared for the hills more (nuff said), but finished with a big smile. Thanks to other runners too including Ted, Eliza and Ray for the company during miles 13-25.

"Wow!" (about: 2004)

First marathon. What an experience. I was lucky to have joined a Run 4 Your Life team for two training runs around the course prior to the race so I was mentally prepared for the hills. The hill on mile 25 (east) was a killer, but I was ready for it. I accidently hooked up with a friend I had met at another race and we stuck together for the whole race. She was my inspiration and strength. I hope I was able to provide some for her as well. I will now run marathons as long as I can breathe. Thank you Karen C.!

About the race: Hey, we need some porta-potties please. Otherwise thanks for a great experience and thanks for all the encouragement from the fans and volunteers.

"Deceptively hilly and colder than you think!" (about: 2004)

This is my third time running the Charlotte Marathon IN THE CITY (note the last few years the course was not in Charlotte, but from Davidson, NC to Charlotte). While the 2004 new city course has changed from the mid-1990's city route, the same upward climb back to uptown is still there (that's why they call it UPTOWN) and January weather on Marathon Day seems to always be colder than the posted city 'averages'. I felt like I saw more walkers than usual this time (this was between an 8:00 - 8:45 minute pace) so I think the hills surprised a lot of people. Why? Because they are not obvious hills, instead they are l.o.n.g. grades that you can't see driving around, but THEY ARE THERE and your QUADS WILL FIND THEM.

This year there was excellent volunteer support and cheering people at almost every intersection - pretty amazing in the freezing temperatures. It'd be nice to see this become a larger race; I found myself running solo too often in the last miles and it's hard to keep momentum (or find ANY wind break) when other runners are far away. If I could change anything it'd be to have the course go through other parts of Charlotte. I know it can be a traffic challenge, but Hwy 51 and the south part of Park Road looks pretty much like Suburban Anywhere and says little about Charlotte. But I am glad it is back in town, and that's why I am back too!

"Well run race, even with the hills." (about: 2004)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 4

This was my first marathon and I did not train properly for the hills. I did enough long runs, but they were not hilly enough for this race. I may be back in a few years after getting some faster and flatter marathons under my belt. The water stops were well run by what looked like church groups and Boy Scouts. I was made to feel welcome in Charlotte and by the race promoters. The traffic control was topnotch and the spectators that braved the temperatures were great.

"Challenging course - not for the faint of heart" (about: 2004)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 3

My husband and I came in from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to run the marathon. We were both hoping to qualify for Boston. Did not think Charlotte would have so many hills. It was actually hillier than the Pittsburgh Marathon. Make sure you incorporate some hills in your training before you run this race. The marathon expo at the Westin was small but the people were very friendly. We got to listen to a speaker who described the course and weather which was very helpful.

When we arrived the morning of the race, parking was convenient and we got to hang out at the Westin Hotel and stay warm until about five minutes before the race. We also stayed at the Westin Saturday night after the race - definitely a five star hotel and we got a great marathon rate.

Volunteers and police were excellent and the fans who braved the cold were very supportive. I was very emotional when I finished the race and the volunteers went out of their way to make sure I was o.k. I needed a 3:45 to qualify for Boston and finished in 3:44.28. This will definitely be a very memorable marathon for me. My husband did not qualify but admitted he had not done enough hill training to run the course in 3:35. If we get the opportunity, we will be back again.
