 "Nicely done" (about: 2003)
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 This is the fourth year I have run this marathon, and the weather proved to be a factor again. Since this is beyond anyone's control, I will say that the race management for this event continues to get better and better. I noticed a few more vendors at the expo, the same terrific volunteers(!), good finish line staging, and a challenging course. The only thing I did not so much care for were the little loops you did at miles 9 and 17. Yes, the course is hilly, but it is still good (other than those loops). I wish there were more spectators, but that may come in time. Nicely done, Charlotte! I am glad to have a quality marathon in my hometown. | |

 "I will run it again next year" (about: 2003)
COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 4 This is a good small marathon. It had great volunteers. The weather was 10 degrees and they were still very supportive. I enjoyed the race and will run it next year but hear are some things that need to be improved; 1)not much info on the race web site, 2)better way to distinguish who is running the relay, 3)the relay hand off points were confusing, 4)have toilets on the course, and 5) an urban course. The biggest problem with this race is that it is on 90% rural roads. You are never going to get great fan support or become an elite race when you are running by cows and goats. This could be a great marathon if it was through the city. | |

 "Decent but much room for improvement" (about: 2003)
COURSE: 2 ORGANIZATION: 3 FANS: 2 The people were friendly and the course was pretty, and although the organization was logistically sound, it was far from being runner friendly. They promised water every two miles until mile 20 and every mile thereafter but they did not deliver. There was no gel or bars to be had. The course itself was beautiful countryside leading into the 'city but was deceptively hilly. Unlike other courses where you know it would be rough, the cumulative effect of the hills was felt a lot more than my pre-race drive of the course lead me to believe. Pre-race, the drive to the start was fine but they had us wait for over two hours in a building with woeful (and by the end, wretched) bathroom facilities. Also, not everyone likes having a preach pre-race prayer jammed down their throats--very poor manners if I may say so. | |

"they do the best they can with what they have" (about: 2003)
COURSE: 2 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 2 This was my 29th marathon. I have done the super large and the small. While I commend the organizers for trying hard the race had numerous drawbacks some of which will be hard to overcome. The course was very hilly. While it had no huge climbs it had alot of hills some of which went on for a long time. Further the course lacked spectators and even got lonely. The start at Davidson while indoors lacked food, water and adaquate bathrooms. The Expo was small but nice for this size race. The pasta party was disapointing - no variety of pasta and sauces. While running there was no way to tell who was doing the entire marathon and who was running the relay. As a general obsevation the organizers of this race can learn alot from Mytle and Ocean Drive. One major plus is if you stay at the host hotel everything is just a short walk away. | |

"Improved" (about: 2003)
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 3 FANS: 3 2003 race very cold but MUCH better than 2002. I liked 2003 course better, eliminated the nasty hill near the end. Finish downtown was nice. Post race food much better. Staging building a little crowded. Never saw carb gel on the course. I'm from the area and I wish my neighbors would generate a little more excitement about this event. Volunteers did a great job on a tough day. | |

 "Great Marathon...Would recomend it." (about: 2003)
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 I thought this was a great Marathon. The course is very challenging and the volunteers were GREAT. I would prefer the course to be through the city and not so many rural areas. It's a shame that you don't get to the city until the last 3 miles. I'll be back next year. | |

"Love the point to point marathon" (about: 2002)
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 3 This will be the fifth year I have done this marathon and still you can't ever predict the weather. The course is a nice easy rolling course and this year there won't be that nasty hill at the end since they changed the finish line downtown. There are some areas of the course you will think you are alone since there aren't many fans in these rural areas. Dress warm for this one as they are predicting a cold start. | |

"Be prepared!" (about: 2003)
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 2 I registered for the marathon, but I also wanted to alert all runners that this could be another cold one! Charlotte forcasters are predicting 18 degrees as a low Saturday. At least it is not supposed to rain like last year. Get out the warm running clothes and gloves! | |

"They could do better." (about: 2002)
COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 2 FANS: 3 The course was pretty nice. I'm glad that they are not going to change it. Location for the expo/race number pick up was confusing. Bus ride to start was nice, but they dumped us off at Davidson college with no instructions. Found that runners were using natatorium to stage. Volunteers had no idea were to go. Didn't even know where the start was (all the way across campus). Relay runners overwhelmed. Very unorganized start. Relay exchange areas clogged the course (this is where most of the spectators were). Weather was miserable. I expected better from a race that hosted olympic trials! | |

"Three in a row" (General Comments)
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 I've run Charlotte three years in a row (2000, 2001 and 2002). The point to point course, particularly it's relative directness, makes the ride out to the start a bit intimidating (you mean I have to run all this way back?). Parts of the rural course are incredibly boring. Look for the Great Dane 'farm' as you go by, they look like horses. The approach to downtown builds anticipation perfectly to the last 5 miles. I'll be sad, in a way, to see them scrap this course --- it does give one a feel for this area on a deeper level than the projected new course will. Previous posters rated the weather for 2002 as being dismal. They are understating it I believe. I've never been so wet, my shoes felt like they were 5 pounds each by mile 10. Absolutely awful day, but a PR anyway. Made the experience more meaningful I suppose. They do a great job with this race - Observer's partcipation will hopefully boost the experience even further. |
