"Overpriced and under-organized" (about: 2007)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 1  FANS: 1

Thank goodness I went to pick up my packet the day before the race. Otherwise, I NEVER would have found it. No signs directing anyone to race/packet pickup. In fact, the entrance to the access road actually had a 'NO TRESPASSING' sign!!! I ran the 1/2 and ended up running 16.5 miles due to poor signage and lack of support on the course. I have run multiple marathons & 1/2's over the past several years and I have never experienced such a poorly marked course. Mr. race director...we were running through the WOODS here. There should have been a PERSON at the turnaround points or at least a CLEAR sign. Course maps should also have been provided. Again, if you don't provide a map you MUST support the runners and provide good signage!!!! I could give some slack if this were a less expensive race, but $60 for a HALF marathon??? I expected more & this race fell very short. Volunteers clearly had no direction from the race director. They actually got in the way of runners at the 'water stops' by standing in front of the tables while they watched the race. How about handing out some drinks so the runners don't have to swing off the course and stop? Most importantly however, there should have been a volunteer at the turnarounds so it was clear which way everyone needed to go. I was consciously looking for signs and I still missed it (along with many others who were clearly upset at having to run extra miles). There are so many other great races in FL. Don't waste your time with this one.

After reading the poor reviews here for the 2006 race, I was worried. It was fine however. It was my first trail run. I was pleasantly surprised how cold the start was.

I really enjoyed this race. Excellent course in a beautiful setting. Well shaded and suited to the modest number of participants. If you have trail shoes, wear them. You may find the race site difficult to find since it is located in a rural setting. The race director and his staff were most helpful and friendly. Don't expect the 5-star quality of a big professionally-sponsored race. Yet, this race has its own special charm. Since the course design caused the runners to frequently pass each other on out-and-back legs, by the end of the race, I felt like I knew every marathoner. After the race, each marathoner was provided a delicious breakfast plate. Finally, the entry fee was modest, especially if you entered early.

"Fun trail run" (about: 2007)

Fun run on mostly gravel trails. Lots of open plains, but not much wildlife. Some areas would be boggy if it had rained, but I suspect they would have changed the course. It was sort of a Y-shaped course, which you ran out and back 3 times. Lots of chances to see the faster runners. This could have been a fast course, but finishing times don't reflect it. I thought it was a bit amusing seeing the truck going back and forth on the course, changing mileage markers to update where you were on the course. It mostly worked. Aid stations every mile with porta-potties, water, cold Gatorade, and some with powergel were a nice touch. Well orginized, but parking is limited. I would suggest you arrive a little early. Volunteers were great, but the run is in the country, so there will be no cheering crowds.

Overall, two thumbs up.

"Needs organizational help" (about: 2007)

I ran the half marathon. Location of packet pick-up the day before the race was not marked at all. Had we not found someone else to ask, we could have wandered for a while looking for the tent. At least then we knew where to go race morning or we would have been lost in the dark.

Aid stations were there but many were "help yourself," so that slowed you down trying to find the water mixed in with the electrolyte drink and pretzels. Race volunteers didn't always hand out the drinks and didn't say much. Course had many turn-arounds, so unless you looked at the diagram on the website a day or two before the race, you could have easily gotten lost. They should have had a volunteer at each turn-around point shouting encouragement and directions.

There weren't many people out to encourage the runners, either.

The weather was great, the course was nice and soft and the scenery superb, but the organization of the race could have been better.

A nice, uneventful, double-track equestrian trail, very much unlike the "Xtreme" in the name of the race.

Parking along the side of a long road away from the start makes for a long run to the start if one is late and a long walk back after the race. Be careful parking on the side of the road due to sinking ground.

Well stocked aid stations with water, Gatorade, gel and pretzels. Excellent help by the volunteers. There was even a hot breakfast at the end of the race.

"BAD!!!!" (about: 2006)

4-5 previous marathons

I ran the half marathon, and while the course was very relaxing, flat and pretty easy, the race director needs to learn how to deal w/ people. The marking of the course left much to be desired. The races went off late. The starting line for the half wasn't marked, so many off us had to run extra just to find the starting line. They ran out of Gatorade well before the 1/2 or marathon were over; the race director blamed the runners for going off-course when the course wasn't marked and his own person at the water stop sent folk the wrong way. This one is a definite "NEVER AGAIN."

"Poorly organized" (about: 2006)

I signed up for 1/2 marathon and flew out from Colorado. It was poorly organized and we had no directions or signs to get to the correct starting point on trail. I was the only one who found the half marathon starting point (by accident). They started the race a little late since everyone else was lost getting to starting point. Also turned out to be very humid in a wetlands area. I was expecting a lot more for my money.

The support along the course and the staff that put the race together make you feel good no matter how you really are doing! The course was natural and scenic and the runners come from all over the world!

First Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 3

Recommendations: Have a good map to get to the start/registration. There were no signs from the main highway.

There were 4 runs happening simultaneously. The colored wrist bands were helpful. Good water points, nice small-town feel. Long-sleeve shirts - nice, but the front iron-on would be better as a print. Professional photographer took several pics. of each runner: nice. Excellent soft trail run with some of FL's best scenery. Super time of year for a training run.
