"Run on a Beautiful Beach" (about: 2022)

After finishing the 2022 Houston Marathon (my first) I decided to do another and signed up for the Surfside Beach Marathon. My wife and I go to Surfside often in the summers and love the beautiful, clean beach, so I was excited to run a marathon there. It was a frigid, windy day with clear sky...perfect running weather! The scenery was amazing, watching the sun come up, seeing the waves roll in. Surprisingly, the sand was very good for running; it was well packed, and my feet didn't get a break as I was hoping. The course was two 13.1-mile 'loops' on the beach. There were plenty water stops, but porta-potties were very far apart. It was a small race, and with the course going back and forth, I got to wave and give thumbs-up to the other runners. The post-race food was inappropriate...heavy, saucy meat and pasta...I passed. I really enjoyed this run and it will be on my bucket list every year.

Well organized race. Race Director is a wonderful lady--great communications and very helpful. Volunteers at start/finish great as were the ones at the water stops. Foggy morning made for interesting running along the beach. Footing on the hard packed sand is no concern and is easy on the feet and joints. Don't expect any spectators except around the start/finish. Nice medal and shirt. Pavilion is open for pre- and post race, and parking along the beach is very easy. If you do the evening before race packet pick up give yourself some extra time due to traffic congestion on the highway due to shift change and the numerous chemical plants along the highway. All in all a good race and very different from a 'normal' road race.

All phases of this event were good.
Great course (All on the beach)
Great food at the finish.

Better attention has to be made so that all of the water stations remain open late in the race. Out in the hot sun, and three stations that I counted had been abandoned. Not good. Cups of water left on some tables with no one around. Not good. At 20, 21, and 24 miles the people had left the area.

Get this corrected and the event will be 100%

The surfside marathon is a unique marathon that is totally ran on the beach. There was a high tide this year, so you did have to dodge the waves at certain points, jump over small wash outs in the sand, but it was overall a very nice surface to run on. The temperature was about 60-70 and the wind was a 10mph crosswind. I was coming off of a recent injury so i walked a lot of the course and took in all of the scenery. You see people fishing, riding horses, para sailing and camping on the beach. This is a smaller marathon,i would guess under a 100 marathoners but you get to see everyone because it is an out and back course. There are no spectators except the volunteers and they were all great and enthusiastic. The meal after is the best post race food i have ever had. The medal was cool. The race shirt was a cotton shirt, which i liked because i have too many of the technical shirts. I only paid $50 to enter and it has to be the best value marathon in America.

Was right at the back of the pack. Still, the race personnel were out there on the beach with encouragement, water, gatorade, etc. Crossed the finish line and went in to the pavilion. Plenty of BBQ and all the trimmings. Hope other people will join me next time (2015)

The volunteers were great Including activities for the kids was a great personal touch that makes this marathon unique along with the whole course being on the beach. The food was awesome and plenty of water stops along the way. The weather turned out to be perfect on race day. There was also massages and a chiropractor, which was a great relief. I have never been to a marathon that had a chiropractor. I loved the shirt. It's not a race with a lot of spectators but all the perks and scenery made it a marathon worth running!

Finished this race in about 4:25, slower than I planned. Course only has two turns, so you ran 2-1/2 miles with the wind, then turned and ran 13.1 miles with a headwind. Can be discouraging. Nice bird life, enjoyed the pelicans just off the beach. Plenty of food when I ate and people were still eating when I left around 1pm, 6 hours after race start.

First the Negatives: Two of the water stations in the latter stages of the marathon course had been abandoned, not good for the runners. Then, many people who finished at or near the back of the pack had no food or drink waiting for them......nothing. I learned from some earlier finishers that there was no monitoring of the food lines and they were wiped out early on, not good. The marathon organizers know how many people are still out on the course, and they should avoid people getting seconds and thirds, it just takes a little attention to detail.
Positive: Excellent course. Beautiful Gulf of Mexico. Looking forward to 2014.

I was so impressed by this race in so many ways. They were watching weather and did everything to make sure they would be able to keep the runners safe and still have the run. The swag was fantastic. First timers get a duffel bag that has the race logo and is just a great bag for the gym or weekend away. The shirt has NO sponsors on it, just the logo and was very nice. The medal was great and there was also a coaster with the race logo to take home. The course is on the beach, it's a drive beach, but can be soft in spots. I'd love to go back and run it just to try it barefoot because it's a perfect course for that. After party was nice, lots of good food and just nice atmosphere. Best of all, this was a race that they had insurance to offer refunds if due to weather, illness or injury they offered to refund your race fee. All for only $65. I opted to do this race because my parents were wintering nearby, I would definitely consider making a point to go to the race and run it just because it was such a nice race...what more do you need than the sound of waves for 26.2 miles?

First time (2012) to run a full marathon on the beach exclusively. I'm glad I gave it a shot. For that the course gets four stars. Organization was average except the committee had to deal with severe weather, so I increased it to four stars other runners may disagree entirely with that position however. There were no spectators, not even the volunteers standing by the aid stations because they had to turn their backs to the runners to avoid being slapped in the face by rain torrents. The only spectator that day was the good lord above who ensured no one was struck by all the lightning happening around us.

This weather was by far worse than White Rock, however, the temperature was in the mid- to high-60's, so I decided to finish the race despite the lightning. Post-race gathering was okay, but I couldn't afford to stick around for the awards ceremony because the weather was threatening my return drive that afternoon. Volunteers on the course receive five stars for their perseverence through the weather. Thank you.
