The sixth annual Surfside Beach Marathon was held on Sunday along the beaches of Texas. Stephen Baumgartner, Houston, defended his title by winning the overall marathon with a time of 2 hours 49 minutes and 45 seconds.

The sixth annual Surfside Marathon kicked off at 8 am and Stephen Baumgartner successfully defended his title from last year improving on his course record by over four minutes to run the 26.2 miles in 2 hours 49 minutes and 45 seconds.

   Surfside Beach marathons draw crowd (The Facts)
The Fifth Annual Surfside Marathon kicked off Sunday and current record-holder Stephen Baumgartner of Houston finished just three minutes shy of his course record set in 2007. He ran the marathon in 2 hours 58 minutes and 45 seconds.

   Age not a winning factor at beach marathon (The Galveston County Daily News)
The top three spots at the Surf City Marathon were earned by masters runners. Rick Autrey, 46, winning in three hours, 10 minutes and 46 seconds was followed closely by Canadian Ed Bickley, 49, who finished in 3:12:22. Last year’s masters champion, Ed Sturdivant of Missouri took third place honors. The womens winner won her debut marathon at Surf City proving that experience may not be necessary.

The warmer than normal weather conditions did not slow down Rick Autry, 46, of Nacogdoches. He finished first in the male marathon competition in 3:03:10, 13:45 faster than he finished last year’s race. Autry who has been training and running ultra's to prepare for this years race seemed to enjoy the warmer conditions along the beach.
