"Friendliest Marathon on Earth!" (about: 2006)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 Old Mulkey Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 3

I've done 30-something marathons and this is by far the friendliest. This was the smallest race I've ever run, but I'm so glad I did it. The race was well organized and the volunteers were amazing! Aid stations were every mile and were stocked with PowerAde and/or water and lots of fruit and goodies to munch on. I only put three stars for fans because there weren't many but the fans that were there and the volunteers were great! The course was a 13.1-mile loop that we ran twice. It was very beautiful with all the leaves turning. I have to admit though, it was one of the toughest courses I've run, but I was so proud of myself when I finished! After crossing the finish line, I was ushered to a table for a very nice (and free) massage.

The pasta dinner was delicious. There was no charge for it... only donations. The race staff bent over backwards for us and continually thanked us for choosing their marathon.

My only words of advice would be concerning those coming from out of town or state. Make sure you get in early enough. Driving to Thompkinsville in the dark on the back roads is a little scary, especially if you're traveling alone like I was. Also, I waited until the last minute to get a motel in town and had to settle for one that was scary and dirty (not even a telephone in the room). After speaking with some of the other runners, it sounds like there was a nice motel in town. I definitely recommend this marathon. They know you by name!

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

Okay, I'll admit it: I've run this four times and I'm already signed up for number five! I like a challenge, and I've improved my time each year.

There are other tough courses, like Ellerbee, and there are other places where the scenery is its own form of beautiful, but I've never had a course volunteer look at me and say, "I remember you from last year" any place else I've run. Even the couple behind said, "that's pretty cool" the year it happened.

This is a small event, and it's running on county roads most of the way. There are two monster hills and a few other ones, so don't come with visions of Boston, NYC, or Chicago on your mind. This is a tough course, an excellent workout, and a very friendly event. The proceeds go to a good cause too.

I loved everything about it! It was beautiful fall weather in a rolling hill farm community in Kentucky. The fans were very supportive, and encouraging you every step of the way, usually by name, because your bib is your name not a number. 4-H kids make posters for every participant to encourage along the path. And they also offer a 10-K and a 1/2 marathon. It's very laidback. I smiled the whole way!

First Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

I ran the half marathon and my wife run the full marathon and we both enjoyed ourselves tremendously. The course is tough with all the hills, but the support all along the route and local fans make it a lot of fun. The course is a 13.1 mile loop so my wife and I ran together on the first lap for moral support since it was our first time running these distances. The organizers of this event did a super job all the way from pre-registration to the free massages at the finish line. I highly recommend this course to the serious or recreational runner. You will enjoy the wonderful people, beautiful scenery, and the challenge of the course.

This is a fun little race that the whole town seems to get behind. I have run races in bigger cities where I saw no signs of support from the town. ?Welcome Marathoners? was a common billboard. This town is behind this race and it is good to see. The race is very small more of club run feel but it tries hard as does the community. The volunteers are awesome.

I had signed up for the whole but a flat tire delayed my arrival so I ran the ½. It is a loop course. It is a very hilly course. These are hills that don?t end! There are false summits that go on and on... So be ready for hills. It is Kentucky after all. It is country and scenic if that is your thing. Trees, leaves, trees, leaves?..

Over all a good little race.

This is a really nice friendly small-town event. I've run most of the events since they started, mainly in the 1/2 marathon, but I did the full marathon last year. If you pre-register you will probally see a sign dedicated just to you. They go out of their way to make this a friendly event.

It is a very hilly course, so be ready for a bit of a challenge, but you will not feel crowded! You may be by yourself for a lot of it!

This is what small-town America is all about! A great race organization in a beautiful country setting. The 4H goes out of their way to make you feel welcome and they are sincere. The course is tough, but so what?! This is what marathoning is all about. Do it!!

"Wonderful quaint small-town event!" (about: 2003)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 3

(I ran the half-marathon in October 2003).

The theme of the event is 'wear you're a name not a number,' and they really carried that off! There was a welcoming note waiting for us in our hotel and a free pasta dinner cooked by a group of 4-H girls. The race organizers sincerely made an effort to meet everyone and learn their names.

The course is beautiful -- winding through hills and farms full of fall foliage. Along the route, various clubs had made signs encouraging the runners, including several personalized posters with names of the runners! Tons of fruit at the end, and a medal and great long-sleeved t-shirt too!

Thumbs up!

"Challenging, but nice and quiet" (about: 2003)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 1

The people were great! Everyone really appreciated the fact that I was there. I love small marathons! If you want a big-marketing marathon, loads of crowds, and yelling spectators, then don't run this one. If you want a small, personal marathon, then rock and roll on to Tompkinsville, KY and let it rip! BE READY FOR HILLS. I wasn't. There aren't many hills like that where I live. I wasn't prepared and it about killed me. I was lucky to get a 4:30:00. Only stay at the Tompkinsville Inn! It's a great, super-clean hotel and only about 200 yards from packet pick-up and the free pasta dinner. The hotel is also only about 2 miles from the start/finish. The run is a loop run through beautiful and peaceful country side. My only complaint was that there were no mile markers. The organizers said there would be in 2004. It's also fun finding Tompkinsville. It's a town of about 1,800 people and they all seem really happy to support the marathon (and half marathon and 10K). There may have been about 75 runners total this year in all three events. It's a great get-away! Enjoy!

"Great Race - Wicked Course" (about: 2001)

COURSE: 2  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

I have run 135 marathons and to describe the course as 'challenging' is an understatement. There are no flat spots and runners are either running uphill or running downhill. The organization is great. The people are great. The volunteers are great. The town is great. However, no whining because of a slow time b/c this race is not for the faint of heart. I can't wait until next year!
