Two loop course , mostly rural ,unmolested by traffic. I have ran over a hundred of these ; this is as good of small race as any. Note : if you are anal about aid ststions being on the correct side of the road or little stuff like this ; please stay away. You may ruin it for the rest of us.

"EXCELLENT" (about: 2001)

Yes, it's true the course is hilly....but some days you just got to have a challenge....right? It's a paved route all the way, lined with a beautiful rolling countryside and lots of food and water throughout. The best part is there's very little traffic and the hospitality is overflowing. Perhaps there's not 20,000 fans lining the roads supporting your every muscle flex but the 4-H club recognizes your appearance by stationing posters throughout the course, praising the fact you are there. In the 2001 run, they had a poster for every state that was represented at the marathon. It was quit exciting seeing a sign in a distance....and as you got closer there were comments of encouragement written in a child's hand. I for one appreciated the solitude of the course - I'd rather run in the quietness of the country with the sounds of cows in the distance verses being honked at or practically run over by a car any day. If you want a challenge, meet good people, experience a hometown atmospere and can appreciate the beauty of quite country roads lined with the fall foliage, charming farmhouses, slow moving streams, lazy dogs soaking up the sun and cows watching you pass by, then my friend this is the marathon for you. You'll be so lost in the surroundings that perhaps you'll forget the hills!!!

Challenging, paved course. Through downtown Tompkinville, then out into the countryside. Lots of hills, plenty of water stations, great race organization.

"Hilly course, great organization." (about: 2001)

Super friendly and accommodating organizers. Nice pasta dinner night before (I didn't even know they were hosting one). Well-marked course through beautiful rural Kentucky. Good traffic control at intersections. Adequate water stops, especially for a small marathon. Very few spectators. Very few turns but lots and lots of hills. Six finishers in 2000, 39 finishers this year and I am sure it will continue to grow. If you need crowds to 'pump you up', probably not a good race for you. If you want a challenging and beautiful course with great organization and support, definitely consider running it.

"Scenic, Hilly Course; Friendly People; Small" (General Comments)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 1

Ran in this race in '01. Small-scale race that's a 4H fundraiser. Course is 2x around a hilly 13.1-mile loop having 2 small out-and-backs within the loop. Six finishers in '00, 39 in '01. Very small numbers of 10k and half-marathon participants ran concurrently. Evening-before packet pickup that includes free pasta dinner (dinner not announced in web site). S/F at school parking lot, and the jr. high open for warmth, bathroom, etc. Water, Hi-C, and fruit for post-race treats. A few shower stalls in the school available for post-race cleanup.

Race organizers, benefitting children, and volunteers are all very friendly and eager to please; our suggestions for improvements were actively solicited. Things I mentioned were: 1) 'official' motel, Tompkinsville Inn, relenting to a noon check-out only after many complaints and race-organizer intervention, and 2) having aid stations provide sport drink at all aid stations (not available until 4th aid station, and this fact not mentioned in web site). My guess is runners' comments will get attention.

FYI, you don't run past or see the historic wilderness church (Old Mulkey Meeting House) prominent in race/town advertising; you pass the entrance road one-quarter mile away.

All in all, a decent, mellow small-town marathon. Be prepared for hills.

"Wonderful KY Countryside" (about: 2000)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 4

First time held. Trees started turning fall colors. Course contains hills is a double loop, on the whole very limited traffic, about half mile of city traffic to deal with. Very friendly volunteers manned the water stations. Wonderful area to visit.
