"Fairly flat with a few rolling hills" (about: 2002)

My first marathon in NC, and I won it. It was fairly quick, considering all the rolling hills. This was the 3rd annual and they had finally worked out all the logistical bugs from the first 2 years. Well organized and mapped out. Weather is very unpredictable, however. Could be 70-80; could be freezing ice all over the roads. Be prepared!

I was one of the unlucky runners that were left behind by the 2000 run. I could not believe they postponed the marathon after I flew in for the weekend to run it. Well, you learn from the disappointments, so I probably won't go back.

The comment below about the course is no longer valid. The course has been re-routed and is fantastic as other comments indicate.

Raleigh is a beautiful town with lots to offer as far as scenery. This race was run through the worst parts of town with little to look at and virtually no spectators. The organizers need to route it through other parts where people would be willing to watch and support the runners. Raleigh is a beautiful town - the organizers need to show that part of town... not the undesirable areas.

I have run in the half marathon every year since the beginning. I have also run in three other very large marathons (over 17,000 runners) and really appreciate having such a fine race to run in locally. While my experience in Honolulu, Virginia Beach, and Marine Corps were wonderful with large crowds, expos, and finish line parties, I believe Raleigh is going to rank right up there in due time.

The course is very nice with the dowtown providing the best visuals, flat surface, and the most fans. The finish is also great because you can go inside to warm up, use the restrooms, change, and get something to eat (although, this year there were no bagels?) and return to the finish line to cheer the rest of the runners. Raleigh is such an easy city to get to and park. The organization of getting to and from the race was great and unstressful. I plan to run again and again as long as I have two healthy legs to do so. The race director and all the volunteers did a surperb job!

In general, this race is for every runner, with the 5K on Saturday, the marathon relays, half and full. It was a family day for us, my husband ran his first marathon, I ran the half, and even my little 11-yr-old ran her first relay. I encourage other families to make their new year's resolution to participate in this race in 2003.

My friend from Houston and I decided to run this race in our quest for 50 states. This was my 17th marathon and I was a little nervous about coming, based on the negative comments that were posted regarding the previous couple of marathons. However, my fears were unfounded. I had a wonderful weekend, even though I had to leave right after the race. We really appreciated the hard work of the race director and all the volunteers to pull this race off, in spite of the terrible ice storm and its aftermath. We soon realized that most of the volunteers, spectators and the local runners still did not have power in their homes, and yet all were there with smiles on their faces. The course was a little hilly, but I enjoyed seeing different parts of the town. I usually hate having to do a second loop, but it seemed different the second time around. The traffic control was wonderful, the aid stations were well-staffed with everything we needed, and even though the crowd support was minimal, everyone was very friendly and supportive. We stayed at the Sheraton, and were able to get an automatic 2:00 checkout time, which was greatly appreciated. The pasta dinner could be improved with some kind of entertainment, but the food was good and the price was fair. And in all fairness, the race director did say that the speaker had to cancel because of the weather. All in all, I would recommend this race. Good job!

"Race: Great ! Clarion Hotel: Terrible!" (about: 2002)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 5

I ran this race last year and enjoyed the challenge of the course in spite of all the problems. I did it again this year and had another great time. I love the changes made to the second half of the course. I particularly liked the downhill stretch after Mile 18, knowing that it would be uphill the second time around. The course was well marked and the police officers directing traffic were on top of things. Although there were not many spectators, and one can understand this in light of the ice storm, those that were there were very enthusiastic and encouraging. There was one man that took the time to warn runners about a slick patch on the course. I really appreciated his concern.

My only problem was with the Clarion Hotel, which was listed as an option for this race. Getting the hotel to extend my check out time beyond 12 noon was like pulling teeth! After the race I had to rush back to the hotel to shower and check out, missing all the festivities at the finish line. To add insult to injury, some one stole all the money that was in my wallet. I reported this theft and left town and did not hear a word from the hotel until I called 12 days later. When I called, the manager implied that I was lying about the theft, and said that in any case it was my fault for not checking my wallet into their safe. I have never had such shabby and insensitive treatment from any other hotel.

I will be back in Raleigh next, I love the course and the volunteers, but I will be avoiding the Clarion like the plague that it is.

Good course, great volunteers, and great organization. I echo the many positive comments. This course is much better than last years.

Not a @$%* CP&L utility truck in sight - what a bunch of nonsense. This event will get better and better - I hope the city will continue to support this race.

I was running Kiawah the following week, so I only ran the half this year to keep a friend company while he pursued his sub-4h. Having run the full last year, I was really happy to see the organizer do the double loop, keeping the nice downtown route through the colleges and back streets while eliminating last years terrible second half in the boondocks. This year's course isn't super fast, but it is interesting and nice. After the half, I went to volunteer in the finish area, so I appreciate the kind words here for our efforts. The crowd support was a little thin this year due to the aftermath of the ice storm, but should continue to improve with the downtown only route and more years of holding the marathon. For a regional marathon, Raleigh isn't half bad and it continues to improve! It's worth a run!
