Running up and down the Moskwa River doesn't make the course very spectacular. The marathon organization was more improvization than anything, but if you want to visit Russia, you have to deal with that anyway.
Moscow is an interesting city, so there would be much more potential for a more scenic route.

Unfortunately the weather was so bad due to wind and rain that there weren't any spectators.

The course could be a little more creative. There were maybe 2 or 3 military trailers that were for toilets for the entire course. No porto-lets at the start. I think they need more public support and sponsorship to make this marathon grow.

Not a race I would put on the top of the list to come back to. Results are only published in Russian.

My first international race. I read some of the past comments a little concerned. It was great. Plenty of water, warm sweet tea, and pumpernickle bread with salt. Had TONS of spectators. Lots of cheering, bands. Plenty of refreshments. The only complaint: I don't know where the results are. Great race, beautiful scenery. Thank you!!

I can just agree with all other comments. No changes this year .

I liked registration (quick and easy), the start (right alongside St. Basil's Cathedral) and the weather (it was quite chilly).

The course was a triple-loop on the river side, quite easy and very boring. The street was absolutely traffic-free and also spectator-free. There was plenty of water and hot tea. The worst thing (to my mind) was the absence of every KM marker. The first mark I saw was at 10 KM. The next one was 20 KM.

One more discouraging thing is the absence of our results of the race one week after the marathon. I still hope they will put the results on the site in the near future.

Overall, I wouldn't highly recommend this marathon.

"If you are there, do it, but don't plan a special " (about: 2005)

I was lucky enough to be taking part in the Great Russian Run this summer, a relay from Vladivostok to St Petersburg. We finished on the 8th of September with some recovery time before the Moscow Marathon. My flight back to London wasn't until that Sunday evening so why not run another 26 miles?

Due to my late decision to enter and the plus point that you can enter on the day, I tried to find the registration. Not easy! I was told this was in the Hotel Rossiya but no one inside knew anything about the race (a sign of the complete ambivalence by the locals of the whole event). When I had found the right place it was straight into a quiet room for international runners and no queuing. A minute or two later I had my number, 1111, and time for breakfast before the 12 o'clock start.

The start was perfect, right alongside St. Basil Cathedral but the rest of the race didn't particularly excite me. The route loops back and forth along a dual carriageway on the river side. Ok, the river was quite attractive and you do run past the Kremlin walls but the route is quite dull. The warm sweet tea took me by supprise but just about did the job.

Overall, I did enjoy it but would not wouldn't go to Moscow just for the marathon. Plan a good long weekend, see beautiful St Petersburg along with Moscow, and it might just be worth it.

"Nice city with decent marathon" (about: 2005)

Course was quite easy to run but also quite boring. But what I want to complain most is arrangements of marathon. First refreshment point after 10km. That´s not good. I think that there were only water and tea available nothing else.
And where are the results of the marathon. Now already more than week after the race NO RESULTS AVAILABLE.

"Worth it even with the low marks" (about: 2004)

Even though I gave this race low marks, I still highly recommend it and will definitely do it again in the future. The course was extremely scenic; I just wish it was a single loop instead of a triple loop. It's very discouraging running by the finish line 5 or 6 times before you actually get to finish. The entire course was completely closed to traffic, which is no small feat considering this is one of the main streets in Moscow.

The organization could have been better. We weren't allowed to register online which meant that we had to register at the expo the day before. We also had a very difficult time finding the theatre because there were no signs anywhere. I will say that it was very nice that they had a section just for foreigners with an English-speaking volunteer to help. The bib, shirt, and medal were all very nice and well designed. Unfortunately, the post-race area was nothing more than a grassy hill overlooking the river.

If I could have I would give the spectators 0 stars. The streets were empty! The only spectators I saw were family and friends of the participants. (I would estimate that I saw less than 50 the entire marathon.) If you're a runner that needs crowd support, this isn't your marathon. I was very surprised that in a city as large as Moscow nobody showed up.

I would still highly recommend this marathon because of the experience it provides. There's nothing quite like finishing a marathon with St. Basil's and the Kremlin in the background, you just can't put a price-tag on that! If you'd like to experience a unique marathon with some Eastern European appeal, then Moscow is the place for you!

A really chalk and cheese marathon.

Upsides - Course organization good, traffic free, plenty of water, medical help superb, t-shirt and medal good, pre-race party fun with folk dancing,
incedible start by St. Basil`s and the Kremlin.

Downsides - Pre-race organization iffy (couldn`t register from home), course only marked in 5k`s, water put in cups from bottles (strange idea), loop course a bit mentally tiring on 3rd lap, post-race area a bit bland, and in a city of 9 million people and a nation with such a great sporting history, crowd support was abysmal.

"Beautiful, though repetitive sights" (about: 2003)

COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 3

Good points: course is flat, and there are some great Russian monuments and other sites that keep you occupied during the first part of the race. English assistance pre-race was great.

Downsides: the refreshments are different from other marathons I've run - bread with salt (which I suppose eliminates the need for Gatorade?) and hot tea (which was non-existent during later water stops...). Course only marked in 5K increments, and the loops got really old and a bit depressing as you had to run by the finish area twice! Skip the 'Pasta Meeting' the night before...
