This is the second marathon I have run in Nottingham, with the last being in '96 (but again still very memorable). Thanks to all who were involved in getting this off the ground.

"Mostly flat and some nice scenic sections" (about: 2005)

I thought this race was pretty good, and the organizers did a good job overall. There were some notable sections that were scenic, especially the parts run through the greenery. Lots of folks in the first half!

There was the expected headwind for about a mile or so on the waterway portion, which added to the challenge.

As a Yank from the states, my Nottingham Robin Hood Marathon experience was great except the driving around prior to race day. Leave the driving for a resident, or take a cab.

This was my 4th consecutive year (Marathon in 2002, half in 2003 and 2004). 2002 was only my 2nd race since a 2-mile walking race in the RAF in 1957 and I finished 2nd to last. Most of the officials and wardens had left the course before I arrived at their posts that year. So this year I made sure I passed the starting line soon after the canon fired. Having required treatment for a calf injury right up to 2 days days before the race I half expected to get a recurrence early in the race and have to drop out. I started very slowly, keeping out of the way of the thousands who were faster than me. For the first 30 minutes they went past me at a pace of perhaps 6 minutes to nine mintes a mile, then I was being passed by the 9, 10 and 11 minute pace runners, but my injury never recurred.
I had missed my training but at 12.5 miles I was actually feeeling better as I turned away from the half marathon route and suddenly I felt more energetic and even passed a few runners during the last few miles finishing with almost 20 behind me and nearly a thousand in front of me. I have my own team, called Firefly, in Jamaica and we are running the Reggae Marathon and half Marathon in Negril, Jamaica (where I live) early in December. That will be quite a different race; the half is very flat but the full is hilly for half the distance. The race starts at 5.15 am to calypso bands and lanterns to take advantage of the cooler time of day. Both the Robin Hood and the Reggae are equally enjoyable. Next August I have already planned for my son and 3 daughters to run the Worthersee half marathon in Carinthia, Austria with me, so my next 'Robin Hood' will be 2007.

"a brilliant, well organized day - fantastic!" (about: 2005)

This was my second half marathon and I really enjoyed it and beat my last time! Supporters were fantastic and the marshals excellent. The whole thing was supremely organized. Well done by everyone involved!

"Extreamly Enjoyable Event" (about: 2005)

I would just like to sing the praises of the 'UnSung Heros' so to speak. The Bike marshals. These guys do a fantastic and extreamly challenging job. Riding a 180mph Superbike ALL day at jogging speed loaded up with drinks and blankets etc must be very very tiring work, as these machines just ain't made for going slow, but they all are smiling and always shouting encouragement to each and every one. Any problems and they just seem to magically appear. And its all without pay too. thanks lads. I'm sure I speak for others when I say that we all feel safer knowing that you are around to help if need be....

"great organisation and friendly race" (about: 2005)

I really enjoyed this race as a day out. Nothing exceptional about the course but the support form the spectators and marshalls madeup for it.

"Great experience - poor goody bag at the finish" (about: 2005)

2 previous marathons | 1 Robin Hood Marathon

I have just come back from the half and thoroughly enjoyed the outing. Well done to all the organizers. The biggest disappointment was the goody bag. Seeing how good the rest of the race and organization was I expected a bit more thought in the bag, but overall it was worth the effort. Well done again. See you next year!!

"Windy, but you canĀ“t really blame anyone" (about: 2004)

1 previous marathon | 1 Robin Hood Marathon
COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 4

A nice first half of the course in the city. The second half was a bit boring and hard to run on a windy day. Plenty of space when the half marathon runners had left, though.

Great drink stations with gel and energy drink early enough.

Not very many spectators but they are very supportive. (Thank you, citizens of Nottingham.)

"Yes, I do recommend it, and would do it again!" (about: 2004)

6-10 previous marathons | 1 Robin Hood Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 4

It was good for me because I did a new pb, although when I was battling with the wind at the water sports center, I didn't feel I was winning the battle ! I think the management was OK, but could have been more welcoming. I couldn't get much information on the Internet before going, and I never saw my name on the board, or heard it called when I sprinted to the finish, although other people's names were called.

I thought the spectators were nice, and the race marshalls were particularly supportive.

What about photos? I came alone, so it was difficult for me to get photos.

"Organization now spot-on. 2nd half is tough." (about: 2004)

3 previous marathons | 2 Robin Hood Marathons
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 4

The organization of the Robin Hood Marathon has now got it exactly right. Plenty of drinks stations with all but the first offering energy drink and/or gel. Plenty of marshals and all alert and giving encouragement.

The first half marathon is undulating and takes in some nice parts of Nottingham City. The start and first 3 miles are quite crowded though because of the half-marathoners.

Second half is flat and in the country. This is quite lonely as there are not many spectators around the windy water sports centre.

The start/finish area was well run with tents for changing & kit bags, and plenty of food and activities for spectators.

Results now appear on web-site within 24 hours of the race.
