"A real experience." (about: 2002)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 2

The course starts at 5,500 ft. elevation. The course has two significant up-hills, the second was at mile 16.5 - 18. After mile 10 you run on the side of the road going into on comming traffic. At mile 15 there was a group of kids who called out your name and I thought that was great. There is a 10% grade drop from mile 20 thru 22. At the finish there was a free massage and hamburger lunch - both of which were excelent. Very though course over all. You know it's tough when you go to the pre-race dinner and out of 200+ people, only a few raise their hands admiting that they have run the event before. I did it as a trip to see Mt Rushmore. I would not run it for a PR. I also sugest lots of hill training to build your quads before you attempt it. I highly sugest it as a fun run.

"South Dakota native loved the marathon" (about: 2002)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 3

An beautiful race to run but there are hills to climb and a steep downhill at about 20 miles. The aid stations were plentiful but not many port-a-potties. The orananization was outstanding and the wheather was near perfect. Few to no spectators. Overall one of the best small marathons anyone could ask for if you want scenery and a tough course. Will definately go again. Great job Stacy.

"great experience for my first marathon" (about: 2000)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 4

Very hilly. Don't be fooled, there are plenty of hills. This is secondary though, as the course is beautiful, through the hills and down into the city, the fans are great, aid stations were good although the powerade was watered down and tasted icky. I finished an hour faster than I had planned and there was a great celebration/bbq afterwards and free massages. I highly recommend this marathon. I am gonna try to do this one again next year. Very small, so if you dont want to have to run in packs, this is a good one.

A Runner from FWB, Fla (10/23/2001)
"wonderful race" (about: 2001)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 1

We had a great time here. It was our 10th, and though quite a change from Chicago last year, I wouldn't say I enjoyed it any less. Course was hilly, but that actually helped my time. Would have enjoyed an expo, but with 350 runners, what can you expect? Aid stations were very helpful, having one every mile after 10 really helped. Would recommend this race to anyone wanting to run a marathon but not interested in all the hoopla.

"Beautiful, gorgeous course!" (about: 2001)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 1

Definitely a top 5 marathon for the beautiful scenery. Pretty fast course except for the 2 majorly long hills. Enough water stations & porta potties. Take a hand held camera if you are into that! The only negative was the traffic later on and no shoulder at times to go to. Nice picnic afterwards. It's great to do smaller marathons sometimes...they really treat you well and do things right!

Definitely a top 5 marathon due to the scenery! Very, very pretty! I plan to come back to this race when I am more trained & rested. Enough water stations & porta potties. The only negative was the road had quite a bit of traffic and there wasn't any shoulder to go to at times. Nice picnic for us afterwards...it's great doing the lower key marathons sometimes!

A Runner from Highlands Ranch, CO (10/15/2001)
"Beautiful Mountain Run!" (about: 2001)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 4

This was a well planned and well run event. The course is very beautiful, although maybe not as fast as some had touted. There are a couple of decent uphill sections (6 and 17), but the doozy is the 2.5 mile downhill (20-22.5). This is at 8-10% grade and really beats up the quads and toes.
It was very nice to have aid every mile after the 10 mile point, and those manning the aid stations did a wonderful job. Although the highway is not shut off to traffic, the police did a fine job of keeping you safe. Also it gave you a great opportunity to interact with the fans.
All in all, I really enjoyed the event and the post race area was very nicely done as well with plenty of food and drink.

A Runner from Southern US (10/13/2001)
"Need to advertise hills, but otherwise fun" (about: 2001)

COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 2

I would have trained differently had I read 'course all up and down hill' instead of 'rolling to downhill' in the brochure. I live in a flat area and so there are no hills to run on a routine basis. Having said that, with the proper training, I would run this marathon again. The course was breathtakingly beautiful and the volunteers were great. As noted before, little spectator support and a terrible dearth of portapotties. This was my first marathon with a goal of 'to finish', which I did, but had I had a time goal I would have been very sad. I had fun, though, viewing the scenery and chatting with the other runners who were suprised by the hills.

"Great Little Race" (General Comments)

COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 3

The course is pretty. It takes you through the Black Hills National Forest into Rapid City. The support staff at the water stops were enthusiastic and helpful. Spectator support was nonexistant in some areas. The pre-race Pasta dinner was held at Mount Rushmore with a special lighting of the monument. There is no expo. There are some hills as you might imagine. Be prepared for a severe downhill section at mile 22. Overall it was a well run enjoyable small race. I would recommend this race to anyone.

A Runner from Omaha lady runner (3/21/2001)
"Tough, tough, tough" (about: 2000)

COURSE: 2  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 3

I must have run a different marathon! I trained hard and it wasn't my first. They bus you out too early, and my feet were frozen the first 4 miles. The uphills were killers, and the downhills tore you up. You had to be careful of traffic because the road isn't shut down. I finished in under 4:30, but by the time I entered Rapid City, I was lucky to get any water. There were very few porta potties along the route and many, many people were off in the woods, or didn't bother and just bared all. Gross! The hairpin turn into the stadium was muddy and covered with plywood, and to add insult to injury, you had to climb the stairs to get out of the stadium and to your car in the parking lot. If I hadn't driven the course the day before, I would not have seen the beautiful sights. The hotel I stayed in was listed as a sponsor, but didn't know anything about the marathon, didn't have a special rate, and wouldn't let me check out late. I had to sneak back in to get a shower before driving back to Omaha! Glad I ran it, but I won't be back.
