COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 4 I thought the marathon was a great one and would recommend it to others. The last half of the course was very scenic. You can't beat running next to the beautiful lake with tree-lined mountains. Coeur d'Alene is a great town and well worth the travel to over the long weekend. The marathon itself wasn't crowded and I met lots of friendly runners. My only complaint is that the last 3 miles seemed to have a lot of turns through neighborhoods that were not well marked. The first half of the marathon had volunteers at every turn; the last few miles did not. At several points I had to guess where the course was going. I was wrong once and had to backtrack. The aid stations were well stocked - great volunteers to be out in the rain. All and all a good marathon; lots of fun for a 50-stater or someone looking for an enjoyable way to spend Memorial Day weekend. | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 The course was interesting (the section along the lake was great!) and the staff was well organized and cheerful even though the weather could not have been much worse! With strong winds and pouring down rain the running conditions were not perfect, but the run was still enjoyable and I would certainly consider doing this marathon again and would recommend it to anyone looking for a smaller run with friendly people and happy spectators! | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 5 Just completed the 2006 Couer d'Alene marathon in absolutely horrendous weather conditions. Very cold and it rained most of the day. The light drizzle for the first hour and one half was bearable however the downpour at the two hour mark was incredible to say the least. The course is very scenic once you get past the 12 mile mark. A significant hill at mile 15 truly tests the mettle of competitors. The food at the end was a disappointment. Just had oranges, bananas and just a few bagels by the time I came in which was around the 3:45 mark. I never checked but I would bet that most of the food was already gone from the half marathoners. There was no Coke at the end as well as something hot to drink which would have been great considering the inclement weather. My comments are not meant to be destructive as the people and the City are awesome. Very friendly and scenic. | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 4 Best things about CDA: * Coeur d'Alene is a beautiful place * for a small event there were frequent and regular drink stations * again, for a small event the volunteer and community support was strong * the course profile is a loop with a flat first 1/2 followed by an out-and-back on the lake with a couple of significant hills * Memorial Day weekend is good timing to accommodate out-of-towners, and Southwest Airlines has inexpensive air fares into Spokane, WA, which is a short drive away. Areas for improvement: * many inaccurate mile markers - moved around by kids as pranks? * a bit of crowding on the lakeshore leg with runners and walkers heading in both directions on a narrow path | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 If you want a low-key but solidly supported marathon, the CDA is for you! The 400 or so 'thoners made their way through neighborhoods and then along a lake loop, found incredible water and support along the way. (Unlike one other response, there were bathroom breaks at mile 0, 1, 6, 11 and then several repeated along the lake to choose from ? more than most courses!) They gave bus tours the day before and you could tell how proud they were of their efforts (btw: most of the $ raised goes to community needs). The 'expo' amounted to about 3-4 tables and is usually voluntary on the part of those showing up. Big deal, we came to run a race, didn't we?! Race course was beautiful along the lake. I would hope in the future, they could tie more ?lake frontage? into the route although a double-loop with the hill at mile 13 and (again) at 20 would slow things down. All in all, a well laid-out course with plenty of friendly volunteers. Wish I would have come to spend the whole weekend, as CDA is a beautiful spot on God?s earth. | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 2 I am a 50 stater wannabe and so did not have large expectations from this small city (35,000) and it's small marathon ( usually under 300 in the full). So I don't understand how the last commenter expected a large, fancy expo. And the volunteers at the expo were polite, no they weren't shaking pom poms but they are businesslike at major marathons also. And the townspeople and volunteers on the course were all very small town friendly. Seattle and N.O. have DARN few spectators also and they both have millions of residents. As to the course, it was very beautiful along the lake. And as we ran through town the folks sprayed us grateful runners with their garden hoses. Temps were in the 80's toward the end, that's on the unseasonable end of the spectrum for them at this time of the year. One hill at mile 16, had a long but easy grade, maybe 2 miles long. It did us in in the heat but would be OK in lower, normal temps. I won't do this one again but I'm collecting states. Over all not a bad race, all things considered. | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 2 FANS: 2 This marathon has great potential to be an awesome race but they really need better organization. When I picked up my race packet at the expo---What expo? I just had people handing out shirts and race packets. It seemed like they did not want to be there--No enthusiasm. The race course was scenic but too many miles ran through residental neighborhoods where you see people washing their cars and dogs barking. There was not enough toliets on the course. For the marathon, there was a toliet at the beginning and the next toliet was at mile 11. The finish was ok, you ran through a park and near the lake which was beautiful. In conclusion, would I do this race again, probably not. | |

"Fantastic for the first-time marathoner" (about: 2004)

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 5 This was my first marathon, and it was terrific. People were great, fans excellent (they were cheering only me at mile 20 which gave that extra boost), and the course challenging but not too difficult. Highly recommend for the first-time marathoner. | |

COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 2 FANS: 4 Ok course, 1st half is flat but the second half has a couple of big grades. Nasty weather, pouring rain and wind coming off the lake. Volunteers had already left many of the water stations and it was frustrating trying to run the second half of the course while weaving in and out of the walkers and 1/2 marathon runners. | |

"Beautiful place for a marathon" (about: 2003)
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 3 I couldn't have found a more beautiful place to run my first marathon. I grew up in the area, so it was great to 'come home' for this special occasion. I thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience, and plan to return again next year. |
