First Marathon
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 This was my first marathon and was an absolutely wonderful experience. The course was perfect, fans were great. My only suggestion would be to get rid of the Ultima and get some Gatorade instead. Hopefully I'll see you next year. | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 4 My tenth and favorite marathon! Nice shirt, friendly people, good fan support and good/consistent water/replenishment support throughout the course. I give it an A. However, there were a couple of splits that were a fraction long/short. Also, aid stations sit right on top of mile splits, which makes it difficult to keep track of your splits. I would love to come back and do it again, though!!! | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 The way the Traverse City Track Club runs this marathon reminds me of a family run business where the owners couldn't stand the thought of putting their name on something less than a quality product. All in all I'm more of a city runner but the scenery was great and 1400 runners was a nice size. After seeing the reviews of the Chicago Lakeshore Marathon, I recommend some of those runners swing around the lake and head to Traverse City for this one next year. | |

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 This is a great race. GREAT volunteers! I 'conned' a couple of the volunteers to walk or run with me for a couple minutes at miles 13, 14 and 16. :) They were SO nice even to us in the back... My only complaints are 1) get rid of the Ultima. Gatorade is better. 2) have more water stops. At least every 1.5 miles instead of 2, and every 1 mile would be even better. This is especially nice when you are by yourself and you have no crowd support. Those volunteers are life-savers! The course is absolutely beautiful! Overall, this is a SUPER race (even though I had a bad day, mentally just wasn't into it), and one I'd run again. The running store that sponsors this race was great. We even got free socks! :) There was supposed to be ice cream at the finish, but it was gone by the time I got there. The best was that my friends who ran the last little bit with me were allowed to cross the finish line with me! How cool!! :) Most races won't allow that, but these folks were just NICE! OH, one more thing, the Best Western is the closest to the race start. Bayshore Resort was nice, but not necessary unless you are going for a vacation. Did I mention that the course is beautiful?! Definitely worth running. Definitely a PR'able course. | |

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This was my husband Don's and my third marathon. We ran the Marine Corps Marathon in 2003, and I thought that was great, but this one tops that...by far. The staff, director, spectators, water station volunteers, etc were wonderful. We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express, who gave us an extreme discount, and were friendly. The weather could not have been better if we had specially ordered it. I am a complainer by nature, and this holiday left me speechless with its perfection. Traverse City was beautiful, tourist-friendly, excellent. We are going to do this one every other year, because we fell in love with the city. I actually felt homesick when I left. I loved the trail we ran, alongside the water, gorgeous homes, and lots of trees. If you do, but one marathon a year, make this race the one you accomplish! | |

"Beautiful Course, Great Weather, Perfect Weekend!" (about: 2005)

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 2 An outstanding course which is an out and back along the beautiful Grand Traverse Bay. Very gently rolling terrain with no hills to speak of. Sparse spectators but homeowners were out in full force giving us support. Easy course to keep an even pace on if you are trying to qualify for Boston. Tree covered in many areas which kept the sun from bothering you. Could have been better if the fluid stations were a bit closer together (instead of every two miles) and if they served Gatorade instead of Ultima. Great medals and awesome town to eat in and party race evening. I highly recommend this race to all who want to experience the best small marathon around. | |

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 This race features gorgeous views of the Grand Traverse Bay and a course that's ideal for anyone looking for a Boston qualifier or PR. The terrain is flat to slightly rolling, but there's nothing that could really be called a hill. I prefer this slight variation to a pancake-flat course like Chicago, as it allows you to naturally vary your stride and eases the workload on your legs. With only about 1200 runners, there is plenty of room to run right from the beginning. Aid stations are well organized. This is an 'old school' race without the bells and whistles--no pasta dinner, giant expo, online runner tracking, huge cheering multitudes, etc. Just solid organization, superb friendly volunteers, good post-race refreshments. The T-shirt is the best race shirt I've seen, a high-quality coolmax shirt by Brooks that I will enjoy training in this summer. Most of the course is not closed to traffic, but this is absolutely not a problem; I only saw a few cars. Spectators are few but enthusiastic. This is simply a great small race, and I thank the organizers and volunteers for helping me reach Boston! | |

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 The Bayshore course offers breath-taking views of Lake Michigan with the fragerance of lilacs from the beautiful trees lining the course. The last few miles seemed downhill - thank you! The course is very fast and the people are very friendly. I'll tell all my friends about this one! | |

First Marathon
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 4 Really enjoyed my first marathon at Bayshore. Had never seen this area before and could not believe how beautiful it was. People were great! With the 1500-runner limit, it was big enough to make it very interesting but not congested or overcrowded. Registration and packet pick up went very smoothly. Looking forward to next year! | |

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This was my first marathon. I will run it again in 2005 as my third, hoping to qualify for Boston. This fast course is great for spectators. With a map and an idea of your pace, they can meet you at several points along the route and still get back to the finish. The weather was perfect, but remember this is Michigan, so be prepared. Traverse City is a wonderful town to visit and our hotel was very accommodating. |
