COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 I love my hometown marathon. However, after this years dog and pony show I doubt I'll ever run it again.Unless they change their rules policy. To most it's no big deal, but after they allowed the Over-all female winner to use a 4-person relay team to pace her throughout the whole race, it's no longer a race, it's a parade of shenanigans. There is a reason it's not allowed with 'legit' marathons. It's an unfair advantage. Sad to see this is allowed. What's next with this marathon- Pacers on their bicycles? | |

"Beautiful scenery and amazing crowd" (about: 2017)

COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 I loved this race. Beautiful view of the city from the park and the bridges. Awesome medal. The shirt size small is way too big. Would be nice to have an extra small. Nice crowd support. Loved the early start time. Excellent organization at the start. Not too crowded. Aid stations every mile. It was my 6th marathon. The course was difficult and continuously hilly. Second half had a good number of hills even though the website indicates otherwise. Even the last mile had 1 hill (not bad though).Not a PR course by all means but worth to do to see the city and appreciate the view. Not every marathon is done for a PR. Weather was awesome. | |

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 Drove in from out of town and stayed at the Millennium Hotel which was about a mile walk to the start and there was a shuttle bus back from the finish (the finish is probably 1.5-2 miles from the hotel). For those that care about the non running things: Expo was pretty large and the official race gear was Asics, so good stuff to buy. Race shirt was a little wonky, as the theme this year was emoji's. They give out race posters, and again it was emoji based. Some past ones they had on display at the expo were pig themed, which were pretty fresh. Got a pretty cool bookbag as well, I can see myself using it for races carrying my clothes and stuff in the future. The medal was nothing to write home about, but it was definitely a good medal. The race itself: LOTS of on course support. Plenty of aid stations, one every mile with water and Gatorade. GUs at 18 and 22. Johnnies on the spot every mile too. So many volunteers. So great! Can't say enough about them. The entire city seems to embrace this race, which means lots of crowd support. Plenty of on course entertainment to keep your mind occupied. Bacon passed out at mile 2, guy with the horn saying get the 'F' up the hill, Elvis, an actual live pig, Lauren Hill's basketball station passing out balls to shoot and so much more. Plenty of pace groups (although the 3:05 group went the the hilly first half in 1:30-:31, which ended up dropping a lot of people towards the end) that knew the course inside and out. Weather was ideal. A chilly 38-40 at the start climbing to 50 or so towards the end. Okay, the hills. Yes, they're there. And they are decent in size. About 400ft of elevation gain between miles 6-9, so take it for what it's worth. Another climb around mile 12 I think. But keep in mind that what goes up, must come down. After 12, there were some fast downhill miles and then it eventually leveled out with a few rollers for the last 10 miles. Just know the course ahead of time and don't kill yourself early! There was a ton of post race food, all the typical fare. Pizza too if you can stomach it. I just wish there was a bag to put it all in. Oh well, I used my foil blanket as a makeshift bag. All in all, a top notch event that I think anyone would enjoy. Just know that it isn't the fastest or flattest course, but you can still run good if you know how to handle the course. | |

"Great Crowd & Race Support, Hilly Through 9" (about: 2017)

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 This was my 9th marathon, previous ones: Chicago (3x), Boston, IL Marathon, St. Louis, Houston & Buffalo. This was by far the funnest one of them all. For a mid-sized marathon the course support is pretty amazing & the pig theme is kept through everywhere. The course is challenging through about 9 with a few good hills. After that it's mostly rolling but more down than up. You reach the highest point on mile 8 with an awesome view of the city. There are a couple miles where are you REALLY running down & it's a great opportunity to get going after the hills. The race has way more aid stations than other races mainly because it's sponsored by Proctor & Gamble. Course is descently tough, crowd & race support awesome, would do it again in a heart-beat! | |

"Yet again, a fantastic event" (about: 2017)

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 This is the second time we have run this marathon (2009 and 2017), and it was even better than I'd remembered it. Amazing crowd support, tons of live music, nice course, and great finish line to relax and stretch. Water/gatorade were beyond abundant, and alternative nutrition was wowing as well (swedish fish, cookies, oranges, crackers, chocolate). The course has a very scenic stint around mile 7, lots of cute different areas of the city, and then has a bit of a drier stretch around mile 22 (as many marathons seem to have). They even had a very cool 'quote' mile where yard signs had inspirational quotes that help in the end of a race. Nice medal and swag, large expo, and Asics shift. At the finish, there were many different chips, bananas, fruit cups, and pizza. Bag check was seamless. All in all, great race! | |

"Awesome Race w/ Tremendous Spectator & Spectator" (about: 2016)
First Marathon
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 The Flying Pig was my first marathon and I could not have been any happier selecting this race to do my first marathon. I spent a lot of time researching which race I wanted to do and definitely made the right choice. What initially drew me to this race was the feedback on the spectator and volunteer support throughout the race. I thought this area actually exceeded my expectations and hopes. The course is 'challenging' but not difficult. The major climbs are in the first 10 miles but the run still has a good number of rolling hills throughout. The only negative I had on the course was that roads were a little rough at times and occasionally had to watch for pot holes. The grunts (volunteers) were awesome at each aid station. The day turned warm and humid and always made sure you had what you needed. I was struggling really bad at the end and a volunteer rode his bike next to me for a mile encouraging me. Everyone made you feel special throughout the race. The expo was pretty large with a lot of good give-aways. A few of my negatives: - They had the port-a-potties in the corrals and my corral did not have enough. Lines were still long when the race started - I was not overly excited about the merchandise you could purchase for men. Additional Positives: - Liked the poster in the box along with the bag - Unbelievable aid stations. - Nice finishers area with plenty of snacks (would have been nice to have a bag to put it in though). - Social media exposure. It will be hard to find another race that will meet the expectations that I got at this race. Really tremendous experience (now I just didn't fade over the last 8 miles, it would have been a perfect weekend) | |

COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 3 FANS: 5 The organizers make the runner navigate the entire expo to find the marathon shirt (behind a curtain). the expo was hot and crowded. No one should be made to go past vendors just to pick up a shirt. The course was continually hilly (the elevation map is misleading). The finishing area should provide milk or some kind of protein. The volunteers were great. The could not have been better. Many people on the course provided oranges and water. | |

COURSE: 2 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 4 Lets see The Pig Ups: Fun expo. Nice that local schools would produce a sign for runners. Great volunteers. Bridge crossing was a blast. Downs: The hills are really tough and large sections of the climb by the casino have 0 shade. Distance between police support allowed vehicles to 'stray' onto the route. | |

COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 I love the PIG. I've done several races here, including halves and fulls. This year I did the full. I had forgotten just how FUN the spectators are and how often they have volunteers on the course. That was HUGE. It was also fantastic when they brought out ice for everyone on the course when it got hot. I've registered for the full next year solely based on the course support and how fun they make it. It is one of my favorites marathons. This was overall marathon #20 for me. Yes, it is hilly, but the big hills are in the first half. | |

"Great Race - Fast Second Half; Fast Finish" (about: 2015)

COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 5 Had a great time at this race. First half is a little tough, the bridges over the river are scenic, but steep; Fan support up the long hills was second only to Boston; here you can enjoy the fans because the hills are early in the race when it is still easy to smile. Second half was downhill or flat and straight, no tight turns at the end which helps. Thought the Flying Pig theme would get old, but it was fun throughout the weekend. |
