 "Slanted Pavement & Crowded Checkpoints" (about: 2001)
COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 2 I hate to be the only one with negative comments, but you should be aware that there is a down side of this course. I have two short comments. 1. Almost the entire course is shared with automobile traffic. So, the organizers have the runners running next to the curb on the right side of the road for about 90% of the 26.2 miles. With the natural crown of the road you will be running on a slant almost the entire way. 2. Each of the 4 relay checkpoints gets more and more crowded and less organized. At checkpoint 4 (mile 20) I had to yell ?runner coming through? just for the spectators to make way for me to go around the relay area. On the positive side if I weren?t trying to run marathons in other states, I would probably do this one again some other time. | |

 "BEST MARATHON I'VE EVER RUN! (IT WAS MY FIRST)" (General Comments)
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 What a rush crossing the finishing line and hearing my name called out over a loud speaker! This being my first marathon I have no others to compare it to. However, everything was as I expected except maybe the weather. My wife and two children accompanied me and we all stayed at the Holiday Inn for $79 what a deal! There were vendors selling everything having to do with running, great pasta meal at Ripleys' Aquarium, and no crowds at the beach for a change. Everything went like clockwork beginning with the bus ride to the start. Lots of water\Gatorade sites along the route, well positioned mile markers, emergency medical personnel everywhere, and the runners were great. While running I had conversations with people from across the states and was surprised to learn that this was a first marathon for them as well. I hope to run this one again next year and would highly recommend it to others. | |

 "Great job Myrtle Beach" (about: 2001)
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 My wife and I drove up from FL to run in this year's event. First of all, we were glad to see that so much of the city supported the event. The newspaper ran stories on it in the days leading up to the race, as did the TV news. The expo was about what we expected for a race this size, but the unlimited free beer: what a true bonus. Accomodations are easy to come by, since it is the off-season, but don't jump into the first hotel room you find. With a little reasearch, we found a 4-bedroom house on the ocean for $150 a night, which we shared with another couple. The race start, 6:30am, might be a little early, but considering that they keep the course open for 8 hours, it is justified. Parking at the start was not a problem. The start and finish was held at Coastal Federal Field, their minor league baseball stadium, which meant plenty of bathrooms. The organization was professional, the race started on time, give or take a minute or two. The course was very flat and seemed to travel in all directions equally. The bad weather that came through on the day of the race was not pleasant, (20-25 mph winds), but not anyone's fault. At least the course turned enough times to give you some break. As for the scenery, most of the time you got to look at tourist shops, hotels and restaurants. Only on one stretch did the ocean stay in view for an extended amount of time. You did run through an amusement park, which was closed, near mile 6 or 7, and at mile 25 you went through Browdway at the Beach, which is a huge collection of shops and restaurants. All in all I think they did the best they could with the area they had. Spectators were minimal, but the volunteers at every intersection and water stop were loud and enthusiastic. Police did an excellent job controlling traffic. Water stops were all well supplied, as were the two food stops. The finish line area was good as well. They called out your name as you came in. The medal was nice; heavy with the year printed on it. The t-shirts were also good; long sleeved, 8 color, dated and with the word marathon printed down the left sleeve. Finish line area had plenty of the usual, fruit and breads, live music, and more free beer. The post race feed was held at 6:00pm at a downtown location. They had an impressive buffet including carved ham, chicken wings, several pastas, fruit and veggies, chips and dip, and still more free beer and wine. One of my only complaints was the awards. They only announced the overall 3 male and male master. Everybody else was on the honor system, i.e. go up to the awards table and say 'I'm the 2nd place male age 20-24, give me my award.' It seems that with the nice stage that they had, they could have called the winners up. But overall, we had a very good experience, and would recommend this race to our friends. | |

 "Volunteers don't get any better than this!" (about: 2001)
COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 A near-perfect first marathon! The volunteers at Myrtle Beach can't be beat -- numerous (two or more at each of hundreds of street crossings), cheerful, supportive, encouraging, and FUN! Flat flat flat flat course, extremely well marked, lots of variety to look at along the way from gorgeous ocean views to wacky beach town amusement parks. Well-organized packet pickup, start and finish; ample supplies for slower runners at almost all aid stations, great t-shirts and medals. Very minor negatives in unpredictable February weather, pedestrians wandering freely on course in shopping area at mile 25, and few goodies left at finish for later finishers (after 7 hours, even though course is open 8 hours). This race is worth a trip for a first-time marathon or to start the year with a fun event in a family-oriented beach town. | |

"One of my favorite races" (General Comments)
COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 I've done all three Myrtle Beach Marathons. It gets better each year. The city and the race committee go all out to support the runners, and there are plenty of activities surrounding the race. Guest speakers, carbo dinner, and post race parties are excellent. They have a great expo (at the host hotel, Holiday Inn Oceanside), which lasts for several days and is open until late in the evenings. I especially appreciate the support we Penguins at the back of the pack receive. My only complaint is the first two years had early starts, this was discontinued in the third year. However, the support was still there. This year the course was changed to begin and end at the new baseball stadium, with plenty of space to park. This was a big improvement over the first two years which had start and finish lines at least a mile apart. I plan to participate in this marathon for a long time! | |

 "Well run friendly marathon." (about: 2000)
COURSE: 3 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 3 The marathon was very well organized. There were no problems with registration or the start/finish of the race. The course is very flat but ran a little too much on business streets rather than the more scenic areas of Myrtle Beach. The crowd support was very friendly but sparse. |
