"Great first marathon!" (about: 2014)

1 previous marathon | 1 Myrtle Beach Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 4

Myrtle Beach was my first full marathon, and I am happy that I chose it. Organization was excellent, volunteers were plentiful and friendly, and the expo was convenient and had lots of vendors. I thought the host hotels were reasonably priced and they offered free shuttles to and from the start line. We stayed at the Breakers and it was possible to walk to shops and restaurants, and it was only about a mile from the start line. But because of the rain prior to the race, I waited in Starbuck's across the street from the hotel with other runners, and then hopped on the shuttle to the start line.

Can't compare it to any other marathon, but for me it was a wonderful experience. The spectators were sparse; however, I'm sure the morning downpour and the constant (and I do mean constant) wind kept more than a few away. Those who did line the course, were great.

Loved the finishers medal, T-shirt and small backpack. I thought the food at the finish was sufficient and the chocolate milk was a plus.

I would definitely recommend this race and would definitely run it again.

"Great Flat Course" (about: 2014)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 Myrtle Beach Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 4

This marathon is a definite PR course. The only thing that could make this course harder is the wind. It was constantly blowing off the ocean once the rain stopped falling right at the start. The course is about as flat as you can get. There was only one small rise around mile 19. I was coming off a foot injury so I took my time the last 6 miles (jog/walked) and still came in around 4 hours 20 minutes. I would love to come back when I am completely healthy and trained. This race has the potential to be one of the best not only in the south but also in the country.

The volunteers were totally awesome and the people who came out thanked us for coming to South Carolina and picking their race.

The post- race food was ok with bananas,bagels,fruit cups, beer and chocolate milk!!! Thank god some race directors listen and provide chocolate milk at the end.

The race shirt was a short sleeve shirt with animals on the front. Will save it for the blanket I am getting made.

Medal was good with it being two sandels with imprints of the toes even on the medal. They also gave a small shoulder bag.

The packet pickup was easy at the convention center and had a lot of vendors.

Some suggestions for runners of future MB Marathon marathons:

I stayed at the Marriott Grand Dunes which was nice and out of the way of the hustle bustle of downtown. With this race on Valentines weekend, my wife really appreciated the nice resort touch instead of staying at a dumpy motel on the strip.

You will need a car to go places here. A lot of businesses are still closed for the season so you may have to look around for stuff to do.

After the race eat at RIOZ Brazilian restaurant on 21st Street. It is expensive but so nice and worth every penny.

In summary, as I am now over 1/5 through the 50 State quest, I am glad I ran this one for the South Carolina Marathon.

"Great volunteers at aid stations" (about: 2014)

1 previous marathon | 1 Myrtle Beach Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 2

This was my first marathon and as a course it wasn't bad to run. The volunteers working the water stations were fabulous!!! The medical staff was good but for those with really bad blisters - they need to have tape not just a few band aids. The volunteers braving the weather at random spots along the course were a welcome sight!!! Unfortunately crowd support was by far the worse I have seen at a race but to be fair the weather wasn't that great!
Biggest complaint was those that finished towards the end of the time limit were all but forgotten. Finished around 6 hours due to injury and sickness and there were vendors and other things in the Post Race Village that were already closed up. There was a guy packing up signs for the Post Race Village and there were still a lot of people finishing the course. The food was gated off and looked deserted so we didn't bother. Gear check was bags thrown around a tent that wasn't manned by anyone! No ponchos, mylar wraps or even garbage bags for warmth at the finish! It was extremely disappointing to see a race that allows those who can't finish in 4 hours to have such a poor experience when finishing! If you commit to a 7 hour time limit then all aspects of the event should be available for all!!!!!!

This made my second year running this marathon and actually the only marathon course that I have run. I wanted a flat course that I knew so that I could qualify for Boston. (Which I did with a PR 30 minutes faster than last year!) The race started at 6:30 in the morning. It was pouring rain up to 5 minutes before the start and then miraculously it stopped! The only bad thing is that the wind kept coming. For the first 6 miles and the last 6 miles of the marathon we ran directly into a brutal 20 MPH wind. I gave the spectators a 3 because I believe many of them stayed home because of the weather. Last year there was probably 3 times the amount of spectators. Overall is was once again a great and organized race! I would recommend it to anyone looking to PR, qualify for Boston, or wanting a nice destination Marathon.

"Pleasant scenery, fast course, good organization" (about: 2014)

6-10 previous marathons | 1 Myrtle Beach Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 2

About the course: This is a great course for running a fast race. A long oval with few turns, no hills (just a few very slight inclines), and no overpasses. Interesting scenery of the Myrtle Beach strip, shopping areas, beach and recreational views, and a brief run on a bike path. The volunteer support was wonderful. Water tables, mile markers, and medical tents were all well marked. Only a few concentrated areas of crowd support.
In the Non-race areas: Several hotels offered shuttle service to the start and offered very reasonable rates. The expo was small but everyone was helpful and friendly. Bag drop was well marked but a little chaotic and unorganized (however, I easily claimed my bag at the finish). Finish line was well organized and there was plenty of drinks, fruit, beer, and chicken noodle soup for the runners.
Runner Goodies: Shirt was very nice soft cotton and fitted (something I will actually wear). Medal was a little cheesy for my taste - but fitting for Myrtle Beach:) Goody bag was an embroidered black backpack (very cool).
Bottom Line: I would recommend this race!

"great marathon experience" (about: 2013)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 Myrtle Beach Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 3

This was my 29th marathon and one of the best. Very flat course, a definite BQ. The volunteers were great, my pace coach Tom was absolutely superb, I wish I could take him to every marathon. I am surprised nobody mentioned the tiger cubs at the expo which was absolutely unique. The only fault I thought was the use of gun as against chip time. For someone in his seventies it did not make sense

"Best Race For First Marathon" (about: 2013)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 Myrtle Beach Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

This was my 22nd marathon but my first review.

This is the best race I've done, especially if you are doing your first marathon. Flat with all water stations open if your at the back of the pack (5 hr+). Even the entertainment was still at the last 2 water stations.

This was my 6th marathon and I really enjoyed the flat course and well organized water stations and aids.
The weather was perfect for the race day! I will definitely do it again.

"Mixed Bag" (about: 2013)

11-50 previous marathons
COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 3

I had higher expectations for the run. It wasn't bad but wasn't great either.

PROS
* friendly, welcoming town
* flat course
* plenty of hotels
* great volunteers
* waters stops were great
* course well manned by friendly police

CONS
* Course is fairly pedestrian
* Where were the advertised course snacks?
* Expo workers uninformed ... I got different answers to the same question from no fewer than 4 volunteers
* Shuttle busses -- mass confusion before and after race .. No race official could direct us properly
* Hotel -- if you are looking for stable Internet and
cable do not stay at Courtyard
* tracking application for smartphone was a waste of $1.99
* very few fans on course and, strangely, no live music to be found

So, a mixed bag overall. Thank you Myrtle Beach.

"Get your mileage markers corrected" (about: 2013)

6-10 previous marathons | 1 Myrtle Beach Marathon
COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 3

I was entered for the cancelled 2010 race and ran 2013 because it's an easy drive and the date worked well with my schedule.

Overall the race seemed well organized. Parking was relatively convenient to the start/finish. Aid stations were properly stocked and manned. The course is mostly flat and would probably be considered boring by most but I don't really care about scenery in a marathon.

My only real complaint is that several of the mile markers, as well as the 10k split, were off. It's almost like they put them at a 'convenient' location. It was a little disconcerting and should be corrected if the organizers want runners to take this race seriously.
