"Excellent Marathon in Every Way" (about: 2005)

Myrtle Beach 2005 was my 8th marathon, but my 1st time to run this race. From registration to the finish line, this was an excellent event in every way. Everyone who worked on the marathon was friendly and helpful. The aid stations were great, the start and finish were well organized, and the weather was perfect. Only suggestion: Add more Porta-Potties along the course, especially in the first half of the race.

Go ahead and line up at the front... no one will stop you. But be prepared to get run over. Nice flat course. Friendly folks. Thanks to Wendy's for supplying nice size cups at the stations. I was disappointed we didn't get Frosties at the finish...

This was my second marathon and it was super. Very well organized with lots of helpful volunteers.

The flat/fast course was well-marked, and while we did run with some traffic, I felt safe and well-supported by the police and race volunteers. Plenty of well-stocked/staffed hydration stops and frequent split clocks. The weather really cooperated and there was only a slight ocean breeze to work through.

No huge crowds but there was a steady stream of enthusiastic supporters and a nice, celebratory race-finish atmosphere (complete with more free beer and numerous massage tables).

The pasta dinner was well worth it; very tasty selection with linen napkins and wait-staff service! The Expo/registration was efficient; just a little crowded (but there was free beer!).

We stayed at the Holiday Inn (ocean front room) and I would highly recommend it. Nice clean rooms, awesome view, and close to the action. We drove to the start and had no trouble with traffic or parking. Shuttles were available too.

I would definitely run this race again!

Second time I've run the Myrtle Beach. From start to finish the best organized marathon I've run. The race director is even there to shake your hand when you cross the finish line. After running the NYC, the very slight congestion at the start is nothing. It's all about running your best and the course and crew make sure you have that chance. See you next year!!

Perfect day and course for fast times. For organizers, one opportunity might be to streamline the check-in process (including moving the displays that took up nine parking spaces in a tight lot). Hopefully I'm not the only one, but I missed that the 5K was chip-timed and nobody told me to get one (nor a medal afterward). For me, that was just a warm-up for Saturday's marathon, so no biggie, but I hope others didn't miss out. Also wasn't real clear on where things were after the marathon; I missed those apparently wonderful massage tables (maybe if organizers gave you a site map?). House of Blues was a LOT of fun. Free food and New South, and both were good. The video was a very nice touch so soon after the race's end. That's a nice event to look forward to, oh, at mile 22. Good volunteers, friendly crowd of runners. I hope I make it back next year.

"Well Organized. Great Volunteers!" (about: 2005)

This was my first full marathon and it was great! The packet pick-up was quick and expo was fun. The course was flat with lots of changes in scenery along the way from Ocean Drive hotels to a stretch along the ocean, a residential area and then Highway 17. The water stations were every two miles. I didn't even use my fuel belt! The volunteers were the best!! They were everywhere! I will run this race again and recommend it to friends.

My first marathon. But not my 'first rodeo.' I was strictly a 10k person prior to this, so aid stations, porta-johns (beyond the start), and food were sort of new to me.

I had a really good experience. The weather was awesome. When it was over, it was nice enough outside to stand in cold water, catch some rays and drink a few beers.

RATINGS
The fans: 4 stars. Sparse at some spots. The winner (who passed me going the wrong direction around 14 miles :)) was pretty much alone on the course. I don't think many people knew, 'Hey, that guy is the leader and he is hammering it.' Enthusiasum of volunteers: 5 stars. I really appreciated you folks' support.

Course: 3-4 stars. Flat yes, scenic no. The start was crowded but there were pacers and a few people knew to find them and use them. Starting near the ball stadium was a good idea. One comment though: those persons standing in the restroom to stay warm need to make room for those that really need to... you know... GO. :)

I will do it again if for no other reason than the cute, gray-haired volunteers screaming their heads off - "you can do it" - and the Mich. Ultra at the finish.

The course was great as far as lots of food and drinks available. More porta-johns were needed along the course. More music and live entertainment was also needed.

"Flat Course - Highly Recommend" (about: 2005)

First Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 4

This was my first half marathon, and a very exciting one I might add. The weather was cool, the course flat... a bit slanted at some points, but overall quite good.

I enjoyed the marathoners and half marathoners running together, it gave me inspiration to eventually run a full marathon.

As for the starting line, it could have been better organized. There were no announcements, and I would suggest pace signs so slow runners & walkers know where to line up.

This was a great race and would highly recommend it to others... especially the newbies.

I thought the race was run excellent! Weather cooperated well, but I can easily see that wind could be a factor...I think this year was less windy than normal. Water cups were great...they were big...thanks Wendy's! It would be nice if the aid stations were 50' away from the actual mile markers. Many times I was trying to hit my lap button on my watch and get a cup of water at the same time, but thats pretty good if that's all I can come up with. Lots of massage tables after the race without lines! Great race! I would recommend.
