"A little confusing at times, but great atmosphere" (about: 2016)

2 previous marathons | 1 Richmond Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 5

Richmond is such an amazing city and really cool place to do a race. I had some trouble, along with others, finding the bag drop off/races start since each race started and had their respective bag drop offs on different streets a few blocks away from each other. Also, I had a medical issue and there was not a med tent for 10 miles which, in my opinion is a little to far apart during the back half of the course.

Other than that the atmosphere is amazing, the crowd is fantastic, the race organizers are helpful and the race swag is A1.

"Truly the friendliest!" (about: 2016)

6-10 previous marathons | 1 Richmond Marathon

This was my 6th marathon and I think it lives up to the 'America's friendliest marathon' hype! I'd done the half four times and thought I'd try the full. The bridge at mile 16 was pretty trying, and I found it hard to recover after that. But I still ran my second-fastest time (3:47) and enjoyed another day of perfect weather, great spectators, awesome swag (the fleece blanket is the best!), a fun post-race party, etc. My one complaint - the porta-potties ran out of toilet paper by 7:30 am!

"Enjoyable course..definitely a top marathon choice" (about: 2015)

Being my 3rd full marathon, I have to say that I really enjoyed this race. My preparation for the race was the only disappointing.

The course itself is very nice and has a nice little mix of city, residential and some nature (particularly along the river).

Crowd support was nice and not overly crowded. I was surprised how easy it was to start this race. Organized very well even though it starts on a small street inside the city. Parking around the area can be a little challenging so I would definitely recommend a hotel nearby.

The expo was decent but the finish was excellent!! Best finishing area i've seen yet.

Watch out for the hill on the way to the finish line...

I first heard about this marathon 7 years ago and it everything I heard of! Awesome crowds, great volunteer on and off course. Great stuff, affordable entry price.

"Kudos for the Richmond Marathon." (about: 2015)

I flew cross-country to run the Richmond Marathon and it was totally worth it. The event was fabulously well organized, from the website and registration process, to the Expo and pre-race area (easy bag drop-off, etc.), to the AMAZING support along the course and terrific Finishers' swag (love the fleece blanket), and finally to the Finish area festivities. Pizza, beer and CRABCAKES! Are you kidding me? Wow.

This urban course isn't shoved off into some ugly industrial area. It weaves its way right through Richmond's many interesting neighborhoods, along famous Monument Avenue, and (twice) across the James River.

Did I mention the crowd support? It was euphoric. Frankly, it's hard to quibble with their hype that this is 'America's Friendliest Marathon'. Somehow, they seemed to make every runner feel warmly welcomed and special.

Oh, and that final downhill finish into the chutes Screaming fast and fun!

So, a big THANK YOU to the event organizers, countless volunteers and to the denizens of Richmond who came out and supported us. You were awesome.

I look forward to coming back to race Richmond again someday.

"Perfect course, perfect day" (about: 2015)

Came to Richmond after talking to some others who had done the race - their previous positive experiences were matched by my own. I know the race directors can't take credit for the weather, but it was perfect! The course rolls some, but I found that it helped to work different muscle groups. Party zones were great! Missed the junk food stops somehow. The bridge didn't bother me at all, for some reason. The section right after the bridge is actually a little more uphill. Great downhill finish. The after race party spot is absolutely perfect! Water/powerade stops were plentiful and well supported. For me, the right size race - big enough that there were always people around, but never too crowded. Kudos to everyone!

"Great half marathon experience" (about: 2015)

First Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 4  FANS: 5

(This review is for the HALF marathon, but some of the review applies to the full marathon too.) I've run the Philly, Baltimore, and Richmond half marathons, and I would say that the Richmond half is my favorite! The number of runners is just right (not too crowded, not too sparse), the organization of the race was excellent, and the spectators had so much energy! The course was relatively fast, but not boring; it was relatively flat for the first 5-6 miles, then had a few rolling hills as we ran through the park, and then was relatively flat again until the steep, downhill finish. There were a few parts of the course that were kind of narrow, but otherwise the course was not congested at all. The only issue I had was the lack of portapotties at the start area; it took me about 30 minutes to wait in line, and the marathoners started letting the half-marathoners cut when the start time was only a few minutes away. I noticed a lot of people waiting for portapotties along the course, too. Otherwise, a wonderful race that I will definitely run again!

Ran the half and came away so impressed with the entire experience. I would highly recommend this race to anyone, can't say enough good things about the organization, course, volunteers...it was all just fabulous!

"Beautiful and fun, but that bridge, though!" (about: 2015)

6-10 previous marathons | 1 Richmond Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

First off, just know that this was my first marathon in like 5 years so if I complain, its likely because of inexperience. I felt it was a beautiful course and relatively easy. More serious runners told me the hills were little and that there wasn't really anything to worry about, but I hated that bridge from mile 15-16. Normally, I hit my wall at 19, but that was mine on this race. Spectators are amazing and the amount and quality of fuel was fantastic!

"Great race and great venue - great everything" (about: 2015)

6-10 previous marathons | 1 Richmond Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

I ran this race on Nov 14, 2015. The weather was a balmy 50 degrees with light wind. Everything was perfect. The course is pretty flat with a few hills here and there. The last mile is downhill and I did my fastest mile at the last mile. I would certainly run this again but I am a 50 state marathoner. So, this will be my 51st in the not too distant future. Everything of this marathon was ecstatic - the fans (plenty), the water (plenty), the after marathon food (pretty okay), the wool blanket (one of a kind - the only marathon I have run in my life which has an actual blanket as a give away at the end of the marathon), the hat at the finish line (where did this come from? Wow). The venue was great as well (start and finish in downtown Richmond).
