This was my first marathon and I'm not sure I could have asked for more. I signed up and took the course tour and glad I did because it did prepair me for the race. The organization was greate and all the volunteers help to make this an event to remeber. I have several other marathons on my list but I plan to do this one again.

I ran this marathon in 2011 as my fifth marathon and highly recommend it! The course is absolutely beautiful, the weather was perfect for me on the chilly side, the spectators are so positive and plentiful, the volunteers know how to do their job. I had a PR on this course and if I didn't have other marathons on my list to run I would absolutely run this marathon every year. I also think this would be a great first marathon.

This was only my second marathon and my first in 26 years. As a 52 year old, and a big guy, my criteria were cool weather, relatively flat course, lots of on course support, and a Saturday race day to allow for recovery. This met my needs in all areas and did not disappoint. The start was very well done (Corral 4 of 4); unlike the Disney half, we essentially started moving forward at the starting buzzer, but under control by race officials so it was very smooth. The only suprise was the mile 11 to mile 15 stretch on the very aptly named Forest Hills Rd (& Semme Av) which had rolling hills (FL based runner), but driving the course the day before allowed me to plan for it. The expo had lots of gear available for those interested and packet pickup was smooth. The spectators were phenomenal and the foilage along the River Road and several other stretches was stunning.

This was my 10th marathon and by far the best. I BQ'd & PR'd. The 3:30 pacer was outstanding!! I can't wait to return in 2012. I absolutely loved this course.

"a wonderful first marathon experience!" (about: 2011)

The Suntrust Richmond marathon was my first, but hopefully not my last. Though I have nothing to compare it to, it was a wonderful experience. There are many local hotels that are close to the start, helpful, and runner friendly. At the expo, a marathon representative spent at least 10 minutes mapping out a course with a highlighter for my husband to follow so that he could maximize his spectator presence. The course itself was ran partially through quaint Richmond and a beautiful river-side trail. The spectators are awesome. The signs they help were funny and motivational. Post race was upbeat, organized, and enjoyable. Pizza, bananas, and water. My new favorite combo. The city welcomes the marathon and its runners. They take pride in the race!

Great race and super organized. Loved it! I somehow ended up with a van right behind me on the course but the police did a great job getting him where he belonged!

This was my first marathon and wanted my first 26.2 race to be in my hometown and it did not disappoint. The fall beautiful fall foliage, the fan support, the volunteers, the medal, the bands, and the weather. I could not ask for a better environment.

My only 'gripe' (and I use that word very loosely) would be their unimaginative bib. For a guy who proudly displays the bibs of the races that I compete in, this one was very simple. With such a great logo (a leaf with a shoe print), why not make that a large water mark? Or have different colors for the different races, like the Shamrock does? Maybe use burnt orange, crimson and gold for bib colors since they emphasis fall colors in its color schemes.
