"A perfect day for a perfect event!" (about: 2013)

First Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

I ran in the relay on leg 2 and was teamed up with 2 great ladies with Kathleen Rifkin's help...and encouragement. There was never a doubt how well organized or how well run this event would be. The volunteers were awesome and everyone I know had nothing but praise to say. The safety out on the course was especially good. Everything ran smoothly and no detalis were left unattended to. The Tee shirts rock. Well done everyone it was an honor to be a part of this great event. Can't wait until next year!

"Beautiful race, perfectly run" (about: 2013)

What everyone else said. The route through and around Goshen, NY was beautiful. Nice mix of hills and trails. A surprising amount of spectator support at such a small race. Plenty of folks coming out of their houses to route for us. There were plenty of police at the busy intersections; I counted at least five different forces, three different town police, county sheriff and state police. Plenty of course marshals. Just an exceptionally run event. I will be back!

"Inaugural running? More like a well oiled machine." (about: 2013)

I put the question of participating in the inaugural running of a marathon/relay to a few other runners and received a mixed response. Some urged caution (the signage will be poor!). Some urged defensive measures (bring your own water/GU/porta-potty/cheering section!). Some said the relay runners will pull you along and make you run faster than you want to! Some said just go and enjoy yourself. Glad I heeded the advice of the latter.

Other than the last minute long lines for porta-potties and a 10 minute delay this race came off without a hitch on what was a perfect autumn day. Excellent logistics: Parking was easy-peasy, signage was ample as was runner and traffic management by the volunteers and police. Water stops were plentiful and well provisioned. Porta-potties along the course were placed at all the right places too. For a race through what was mostly bucolic countryside, trail and a bike path there were plenty of friendly and vocal supporters. Cowbell hill was a blast! Glee club acappela under a trailside overpass was a very nice touch too. Good stretches of quite as well.

The course was comprised of a mix of asphalt and some trail through rolling hills and flats. Two hills, one long one at about mile 15 and the steep and challenging cowbell hill at about mile 20 were the most difficult. The last 10k was mostly flat with an overall decreasing slope. The finish line on the horse track made for a unique and enjoyable final kick. Plenty of pasta at the food tent, but I think the faster marathoners and the relay folks got all the sandwiches. Nifty finishers medal and a nice long sleeve tech shirt.

Looking forward to running this race again next year.

"Incredible Race For It's First Annual Event" (about: 2013)

While I typically like to tackle the 26.2 mile distance on my own...My family and I ran the Marathon Course as a Relay Team. The course was beautiful, challanging, well marked, well staffed, and well supported by the local community. The PRO's list for this race goes on and on. There was hot food at the finish. The event website was updated with a ton of information on a consistant basis. The results and photos were all posted for the most part within 24 hours. There was more than enough parking at the Start/Finish area which was only a couple of 10's of a mile away. The finish on the Trotters Track was Awesome. Only a couple of Con's/Suggestions...The on course entertainment (if that's your thing) was a little of a let down. The parking at relay #3 was very difficult. If you like the pre-race expo experience...there wasn't much of one. However, it was somewhat made up at the post race at the track where there were a number of local vendors. Keeping in mind this was the first year for this event...we HIGHLY recommend it!!! Thank You Hambletonian Marathon Staff!!!

"Fantastic experience for runners and supporters." (about: 2013)

First Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

Just wanted to say congratulations on an amazing job - As a spectator, and parent of a runner completing the full marathon - I can't say enough just how fantastic this race was put together. It was so oriented to making the runner and their families have a really great experience. It showed off beautiful countryside (with a made-to-order fall day) and showed off the wonderful people who are committed to running in Orange County.

Please thank all the volunteers. We saw them at a few stations and they weren't just handing out water or gatorade - they were giving each runner that went through a boost of support and encouragement. This spirit went from the first moment we arrived to the finish at the track. Also, I came through Goshen at about 6 pm and didn't see one single bit of evidence that anything had taken place that day, except for the sawhorses waiting to be picked up by the Village.

I know it took support from so many people in the Village and the Town. Please let them know we appreciate all their hard work. The atmosphere at the track allowed people to move in and out to enjoy the finish of the race without losing the 'small town' congeniality. I look forward to next year!!

Park here, walk 100 yards there, pickup your bib & start 50 feet from there. Small town simplicity but run like a big city race. Giant mile markers, enthusiastic course patrols, plenty of water stations. It was hard to believe this was the first year for this race. Rolling terrain, no PR's here, but 8 miles of flat rail trails, mostly near the end where you want them. Pretty Town, beautiful autumn scenery, this is the race to run if your running buddy got into New York and you didn't. Given the simplicity you might just have a better time.

"Extremely well-organized race" (about: 2013)

11-50 previous marathons | 2 Hambletonian Marathons
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 3

The race itself was, in my mind, flawlessly executed. The on-course support from volunteers, medical, and law enforcement personnel was magnificent. There was plenty of fluid and nutrition, and the aid stations were spaced apart very well. The finish on the track was also terrific.

Pre- and post-race communication was also good.

Two negatives I have to offer are minor ones:
1) I would wish for the finisher medal to have the date (2013) included in the design. I realize that the date is on the lanyard, but I would rather the medal be customized each year, and not generic.
2) The post race food was not up to my expectations. The teeny bowl for the pasta made for a very small meal, and I don't know if seconds and thirds were allowed, but even if they were, I would have wanted to keep going back for more food.

I had a great time, even though my race time wasn't a great time. Thank you so much for putting a marathon back on the Orange County map!!

PS - I said in Question 6 that I had run this marathon 2 times because I ran Hambletonian Zero. ;)

Incredibly well organized with a spectacularly scenic course and plenty of enthusiastic locals. A real treat! sure to be a stand-out favorite of Hudson Valley Runners' fall lineup.

"Pasta party" (about: 2013)

1 previous marathon | 1 Hambletonian Marathon

The entire race was fantastic and well organized. The only thing that I wasn't happy with was the pasta party. Perhaps its my fault-I thought for $15 that there would be lots of pasta and a nice spread. All that was there was a tray of ziti with sauce, a bowl of iceburg lettuce, and italian bread. I realize that it was all you can eat, but.... just didn't feel that what we received warranted the price. Otherwise, I had a great time, and a great race. Thank you to everyone who made it happen!

Somehow I ran across your marathon training plan on line and it fit perfectly with what I wanted to do and though I ran the Indianapolis marathon this weekend I followed your plan to a t. I also found you on Facebook and really came to enjoy your weekly comments about the long runs and what to expect for the week. I would love to have this kind of involvement from race directors. So thank you very much for the PB (3:56:21). And congratulations to all the runners that I have thought about during long runs and good luck in your next races.
