My favorite marathon. I schedule everything else around this one.

Organization is top notch. Course is scenic.

The size of the pack is perfect. I wouldn't change a thing!

"This should be a must run!" (about: 2014)

I said it should be a must run. That really applies if you love the military, love the army, want to honor a deceased veteran, or you like a race with that kind of flavor. Starting and finishing down the Avenue of Flags is part of the experience. The course is not totally flat but there is only one real hill at mile two and it has drill sergeants helping you get up it. This is a definite PR possible course. About 7 miles are on post and most of the rest is on the RiverWalk up to Columbus and back. The medal represents dog tags including a chain not a ribbon. There is a marathon, half, 5K, and marathon relay so anyone can take part. When I say run it to honor a veteran this is built into the race. You can wear a special bib to honor a deceased veteran that you know or take one of the names that they have.

"Great small marathon" (about: 2013)

This is a very nice small marathon. If you'd rather run with 2,000 people than 20,000 people, this race might be for you. Everything was well-organized from packet pick-up to race day to post-race festivities. The course is anything but typical. The first one-third of the course winds through Fort Benning. The next two-thirds follow a path along the Chattahoochee River to downtown Columbus and back. The weather for this year was perfect - clear and 42 degrees at the start.

"There's a special feel to this marathon" (about: 2013)

I've only run 2 other marathons before this one, but there is a special feel surrounding this race. It's held on Veteran's Day weekend; you start at Ft. Benning; pick up your materials at the National Infantry Museum. Drill sergeants yelling at you to get you up the hill; the General in charge of Ft. Benning out there cheering you on. Great atmosphere. There are a couple hills early; but most of the course is flat. There are sections where there aren't a lot of spectators, but I typically run alone so I didn't think it was a big deal. The people who were there were very appreciative. I would prefer they move the start time back to 7:00am because it did get hot, but that's not a big deal. I'm very slow, and yet there was plenty of food and beverages when I finished. The medal is cool. Highly recommend this race.

"Really good solid marathon" (about: 2013)

6-10 previous marathons | 1 Soldier Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 4

This marathon had a little of everything a person could ask for. The course had multiple surfaces from asphalt, concrete, wood bridges, and bricks. The first seven miles were on the base with one good hill and a few smaller inclines. Most of the rest of the course was run beside a river that borders Alabama and Georgia. Temps were cool at the start (42) but quickly warmed to the 60s by the finish. I even got something I never thought I could get in November-a sunburn. Areas where my tank- top was not covered got burned-ouch. Shows you should use some sunblock year round. Most people call this course flat but since I live at the beach I would call it flat to a rolling incline/hill course.

The post-race food was a mixed bag for me. McDonalds is one of the sponsors and they gave out a small hamburger or a burrito. I got the hamburger and I should have got the burrito or passed on both. They also had pop cycle bars, beer, soda, water, chips, a few other items. One thing I wanted was chocolate milk and didnt see any.

The race shirt was a grey non-tech shirt with the logo on the front. I dont have to have tech shirts but if you are going to use cotton then it needs to be a good quality shirt. These shirts are cheap compared to the last few years (which were tech and looked good and were selling them for $5 at the expo). One wear, wash and dry and this shirt may be done!

Medal was the logo on a small pair of dog tags. These are probably a big hit with non-military personnel but after wearing real dog tags for 22 years I would have preferred a medal like the Air Force Marathon or Marine Corps Marathon does or least make them bigger.

The volunteers were awesome at all the aid stations and there were plenty on the course.

The Expo was small and was outside which was nice. They had some great deals on shoes if you could find your size.

Some suggestions for runners of future Soldiers marathons:

Hotels are plentiful all around the area but there is a Hampton Inn right at the start but book early.

The best part of this marathon is that you get a chance to run in honor of a fallen Soldier. That was a nice touch on Veterans day weekend.

In summary, as I am near the beginning of the 50 State project, I am glad I ran this one for the Georgia Marathon. The course is a good if you pace yourself, train for the inclines, and go out a little slower on the first half to save some energy for the second half.

"Great all around marathon!" (about: 2013)

I loved this race. The support from the soldiers at Ft Benning and volunteers was first rate. GU, water, gatorade were available throughout the course. The first few miles on the base were hilly, but it was great having the drill instructors 'encourage' runners up the hills. I ran Marine Corps two weeks earlier and found this race was a much better experience (no lines or crowds!). Great atmosphere, great weather, and only a couple of hours away for me, I'll do this race every year!

This is a must do marathon! It is well organized, with a very scenic course, and the best volunteers I've ever experienced. I rate this smaller-town marathon over the five big-city marathons I raced. Thanks for putting on a great memorable event

Small town and scenic and serene. Ran through base with cheering soldiers at spots. Along bike path/river walk with fall leaves, trees, even a deer!, across the river into AL, through a Southern town, great volunteers and music stations but lots of peace and serenity for those like me who don't need spectators. Hampton Inn is not on race site but is at start. Great post-race food - hamburgers, hot dogs, beer, etc. Highly recommend for people who love small-town, scenic, minimum spectators (but they were great)

This was my first marathon and what an awesome experience! The course was amazing. The support on the course and off was top notch. The weather was fabulous. There was ample parking and ample post-race food and beverage. Plus, my family got to spend time at the Infantry Museum and weren't completely bored waiting for me to finish. Can't wait to run in 2013!

This is a great place to hold a marathon. The coarse is slightly hilly, my garmin recorded about 1000' altitude change for the whole course but most is in the first 3-4 miles and nothing really noticeable after that. The course is beautiful. The start/finish at the Infantry Museum is great and being able to run in memory of a 'Fallen Hero' adds a lot to the experience. The shirt is nice and the finisher medal, in the shape of dog tags is very appropriate. The after party is great, food, beer, massages, etc.... very well done. The awards ceremony in front of one of the museum memorials is second to none. I highly recommend this marathon to all.
