"Great Place to Run a Race!!!" (about: 2009)

I have run quite a few races in this town, as I live only an hour and half away! I love running any race in the historic riverside town of Stillwater; it's quaint and filled with lots of fun restaurants, coffee shops, and gift shops! This was my first full marathon and I loved it! It seemed a little hilly, but nice. I love the high-tech T-shirt and the medal!! Fan support seemed really good. I give this race, the town, and the course two thumbs up - way up!!!!!

This was by far the hardest marathon I have ever run, but the medal I received at the finish means more to me than all of my others because it was such a challenge. Great course but very, very hilly. The course begins and ends along the St. Croix River. You run through a nice, small town and out in the country. It was a very well organized race with well stocked water stops, and wonderful volunteers/course marshals and medical personnel throughout the course. All runners start off at the same time. The 20-milers and 12K runners leave the marathoners and half marathoners at mile 2. Half-marathoners split off at about mile 12 and have a downhill into their finish. For the marathoners, the second half of the course can be lonely, as there were not very many spectators, but the ones who were there were passing out great goodies! I very much appreciated the ice water a very nice family handed out just after the hill at mile 17. Miles 18-21 are along a two-lane road with shade trees. The last 6 miles are mostly downhill, which was nice.

Pros: Nice shirt and medal; and training runs were held on the course in the months leading up to the race.

Cons: Not all roads were closed off to traffic.

"Hills & Heat" (about: 2009)

The inaugural running of this race was very well put together. While the number of marathoners was small, there were three other races going on at the same time, so you were able to enjoy some of the bigger-race feel. There were about 500 marathoners and around 2000 total runners that day. The course, however, is challenging with its hills. There are 4 very nasty hills - miles 4, 10, 13, and the beast at 19. The general rolling course took its toll on my legs, along with a very sunny mid-70s day. It's a very scenic course, but not the kind of course to get any kind of decent time on. I ended up about 20 minutes off of my goal. The only plus to the course design is the fact that the last 6 miles are pretty much all downhill and the final push to the finish line is a very nice downhill.

"This run should really take off!" (about: 2009)

I'm glad to see others have given this race positive comments. This was my 16th marathon and I have to say that this one had incredible organization for being the inaugural event. The morning of the race, I was standing down by the water, looking at the bridge, the steam, and the hot air balloons. A guy next to me said, "I hope this run really takes off. They've got a good thing going here." I couldn't agree more. Although it's a hilly course, it's a pleasant environment with the terrain, as well as many enthusiastic volunteers and spectators. This race has the potential to be one of the greats.

"first-time event - built for the future" (about: 2009)

Great course - challenging but not too tough. There were 14 water stops, and we had great crowd support for a race that has two legs that run out of town. You can tell it was a first-time event built for next year.

The temperature was in the 40-50-degree range, the humidity was low, and there was very little wind. Not your usual Minnesota Memorial Day weather. I ran the 20-mile race, so I got to enjoy the nice, hilly countryside. The organizers did a good job of coordinating the various races. My only gripe was finding the mile markers for my race spray-painted on the roads. Good time; good scenery. I will do it again.

All aspects of this marathon were well organized and executed. Ample shuttle buses and portable toilets meant no waiting and easy transportation. Start and finish line areas were well organize, as were the aid stations. The pacing teams were well organized and did an outstanding job. The course was mildly challenging, with some significant hills that were well spaced to allow good recovery. This was one of the best first-year marathons I have ever experienced. My compliments to the entire organizational team.

This was my 4th marathon and the hills were definitely challenging, but still doable. I thought the course was a tad boring and wished it had been more scenic. Medical staff were great, and volunteers were wonderful. Some of the spectators in the residential neighborhoods were great too - providing ice on what turned out to be a hot day. A big thanks to them! A great start for this inaugural marathon; a better expo would help next year. Not much to offer there. The finisher's medals are AWESOME!!!

"Nice Job!" (about: 2009)

6-10 previous marathons | 1 Stillwater Marathon

You can tell that a lot of hard work went into this event because everything about it was organized and well planned. The course had a little bit of everything - country, city, a few hills. Spectators were scarce in a few areas, but those on the course were very supportive. Water stops were well staffed. A very nice shirt and the heaviest medal I've ever received. My only suggestion would be to have a better sound system at the start. I'm sure most of the people missed the Jon Francis story, and I think we were halfway through the anthem before most of the runners realized that someone was singing. Great job on the inaugural!
