(about: 2013) 1 previous marathon \| 1 Fallsburg Marathon and Half Marathon COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 I started running 15 months ago, after 20+ years of dormancy. My wife ran the marathon in 2011 and again in 2012. I only ran the Who Cut the Cheese in 2012, but I was intrigued by everything she told me about the race. So, I sucked it up and ran this year! It was the second most exhilarating thing I have EVER done, just shy of skydiving! NOTHING I could have trained for would have prepared me for this! It was beautiful and terrifying all at the same time. I fell around mile 10, which should have put a stop to my day. But, I'm stubborn, and my wife, the really nice lady who was roving around aid stations (and gave me a banana) and the gentlemen at mile 20 helped me make it through! It was the experience of a lifetime, and no other words can describe it! My time was HORRIBLE, because of my injury, but everyone made me feel spectacular, just by finishing it! I'm here to say if I can do it, ANYONE can! You can't prepare someone for what they will experience on this course, but it's worth the adventure (at least once) for anyone brave enough to try! Thank you for a great day! I'm sure we will see ya'll again! :)

The old fart's running club takes care of the runners - I had trouble fitting all of the treats from the race into my bag for the trip home on the plane! really nice finisher medals too. The trail itself is not very technical, but there are a number of logs to jump, or crawl over or under, hills that require holding a rope to head down, named hills that taunt you on the way up, and, yes, a swamp that you hit twice on the full. I anticipated more mud and trouble based on previous descriptions, but I do think this was an exceptionally dry year. I can only hope that on another visit my trail shoes get an even more foul bath. Even though I had to fly into a small airport for this one I would go back for sure.

S. from Oregon (8/18/2013) "Dirty, bloody, fantastic time" (about: 2013) 50+ previous marathons \| 1 Fallsburg Marathon and Half Marathon COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 2 Really enjoyed this race. I've done tougher trail runs, like Leadville because of the altitude and Sehgahunda because of the 112 gullies, but this was in a class of its own as it was as much an obstacle course as a marathon. Extremely well marked trail. Hills that make the best of us into walkers. Wonderful support station volunteers. Tons of swag. Beautiful scenery. Mud, hills, trees blocking the trail, rocks, roots, dead animals on the trail, and even an old covered bridge. This was a fantastic way to spend a Saturday and I will be back. Thanks for such a great experience.

G. from Houghton, MI (11/26/2012) "Both a race and an adventure" (about: 2012) 1 previous marathon \| 1 Fallsburg Marathon and Half Marathon COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 With hills so steep you need guide ropes, a swamp that may leave you knee deep in mud, and a set of hills that seem like they'll never end, the Old Fart's Marathon is a real adventure. You don't run this race for a time, you run it to say that you've finished and, and you run it to have fun. This was my first marathon. I've ran similar distances total over trail running festivals, but never 26.2 miles all at once. I was told that it was one hell of a race to pick for my first marathon, and it definitely was! I don't regret the choice, and I'm bringing my dad back with me next summer to run it!

(about: 2012) 11-50 previous marathons \| 4-5 Fallsburg Marathon and Half Marathons COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 4 FANS: 3 This was my 4th year running the Fallsburg marathon. It is always an exciting adventure that seems to get a bit more challenging every year. I gave the course a 4 star simply because I didn't like the cemetary section of the race. I gave organization a 4 star simply because bathrooms always seem to be a difficulty. Spectators - its a trail run! I love this race and look forward to running it again next year, especially if they move the start/finish back to the park.

(about: 2012) 50+ previous marathons \| 4-5 Fallsburg Marathon and Half Marathons COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 2 This is not a course for softies. Suffering over the hills seemed to bring us all together; a college cross country team manning the aide stations along with citizen voluneers made the love-in ideal. And the organization can't be bettered anywhere. Summer days don't get any more beautiful than this. Finally, the booty at this run is the best. We have an 'Old Farts' monogrammed towel preserving my favorite recliner.

(about: 2012) 6-10 previous marathons \| 1 Fallsburg Marathon and Half Marathon COURSE: 4 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 5 It is so funny because I am a road runner and this was my first trail race and what a doozy....I was so miserable on this run. But after a few days of thinking, I got my best tech shirt ever, a cool sweatshirt, a medal, my first trophy...and then yesterday in the mail I got a finisher's certificate and a picture. The race was unbelievably marked. The volunteers were unbelievable-especially the lady at mile 19 who gave me a popsicle-and it had the best customer service I have ever seen. So even though I knocked Michigan off my list and have almost no desire to run that again, I am probably going to do it again next year.

I came in 3rd in my age group and went home with way more clothing than I came with...so generous!!

Where else aid station would be driving along with you in a pouring rain to offer you a drink or watermelon?

(about: 2011) 11-50 previous marathons \| 1 Fallsburg Marathon and Half Marathon COURSE: 5 ORGANIZATION: 5 FANS: 4 This was an incredible run. I loved it and hated it at the same time. There never was a dull moment and the trail was difficult. My favorite part of the race was the various types of Chuck Norris hills. The race director and volunteers were awesome! Having run many ultras and marathons, this ranks as the most difficult race I have entered. 2 days later, I am still sore but I feel great and am looking forward to next years race already. Give this race a try-you might love it or hate it-or both-see you at the 2012 Old Farts Marathon.
