"National notoriety - unfortunately" (about: 2007)

I've heard from several friends across the US and they say papers across the US are carrying the story about the awful cold, rainy, breezy conditions during this year's marathon. Even Paul Harvey mentioned the unusually bad conditions on his radio broadcast! I've run twice under similar (even worse) conditions (other marathons, of course) - always swearing, "Never again." My pace group started with ~20. By ~ mile 22 we were down to two. At mile 25 our pace leader dropped off! This attrition is unusual and only indicative of the VERY unusual weather conditions (for fall in Denver).

This is a great course... interesting sights of diverse neighborhoods and parks the whole way. Great aid station support. Good expo. Highlight came from two Colorado companies: Coleman meats for their unlimited all-beef hot dogs (I have to admit inhaling three) and to Red Robin chicken company for their tasty 1/2 chicken breast treats. A BIG THANK YOU to both. These were lifesavers after the long, freezing race. There was reasonable spectator support considering the horrible weather conditions.

"Continuing to improve" (about: 2007)

Last year I ran the half marathon and this year the full. This race continues to improve and was a quality event this year. The course is varied and interesting, the volunteers were excellent, all the necessary services were in place and the expo is getting better. I do have an issue with inviting an admitted drug cheat as a "motivational speaker" but the presence of Bill Romanowski shouldn't detract from the event. With the growth, however, there are a new set of challenges. I could only find porta-pots at one location near the start and the line was unreasonably long even for an hour before the race start. Perhaps put porta-pots at a few different locations to spread the crowd out would work better. Also, and I believe that this was a complaint last year, something has to be done with the start corral. The only way to enter the starting corral is through the very back. So as a 7:00-paced marathoner, I would need to either line up very early or try and work my way through the throng of people who had squeezed into the corral first. Considering the race-day weather, neither was going to work out. I was forced along with dozens of other people to climb the 4-foot-high barriers to get into the corral. Overall I would still recommend this a race to run in Colorado.

My wife and I would like to thank the race director and staff for putting on a great marathon. Their experience and professionalism were demonstrated with one of the best marathons we have run in.

We enjoyed every rain drop along the course, which was supported by hundreds of volunteers and fans daring the rainy and cold Denver fall day. This is a well organized marathon with a well thought-out gentle course. We couldn't have picked a better marathon to run for our 100th.

This course is really well-designed with great support. Even rain the entire time didn't obscure how pretty the route is - not an ugly mile. I have done Chicago and New York and this city marathon is right up there with it. Not a lot of spectators, but it was a pretty miserable day. I would highly recommend this race.

"It was my first marathon and I really enjoyed it!" (about: 2006)

This was my first trip to Denver and also my very first marathon. I arrived one week before the race to get adjusted to the altitude. I didn't have any issues with the altitude on race day. We got really lucky with the perfect weather. I loved the fact that this race was near Halloween and many of the spectators were dressed in costumes and were passing out Halloween candy... spectators overall were great in cheering. I wrote my name on my shirt and got a lot of encouragement and cheers from the spectators for doing so. It was a very scenic run as well with a good representation of the different areas of the city. My cheering posse was the best ever and this course allowed them to catch up and meet me 8 times! FANTASTIC!! Being the New Denver Marathon's debut marathon I think they did a great job. There were ample drink and Gu stations. Another nice perk of this marathon is that you have the hot springs less than an hour drive from the city. They felt amazing to my oh-so-tender legs the next day. I'm glad I did it and it is inspiration to do more marathons.

First half of the course does have a lot of turns, but great after that. I liked the double loop at the park. The only problem I had was the spectators needing to be on the course.First half had bicycle riders that were not part of the marathon that just had to be on the course and stop in front of you. The second half had spectators on their feet watching the masses running to the park not paying any attention to those of us coming out of the park. Host hotel was great but those same spectators voted we should pay $38.00 in hotel taxes.

What a great marathon! From the start at the capitol to its finish there, the organization was top-notch. Water stations were where they should be and the route was very varied. You are also able to see the lead runners at various places, if that is something that spurs you on. The weather was perfect and as far as myself, the altitude didn't bother me and I live and train at 800 ft. I would highly recommend this big-city marathon to anyone.

"GREAT RACE! Gave me goosebumps..." (about: 2006)

1 previous marathon | 1 New Denver Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

Standing at the start line when the flyover passed, I literally got goosebumps! This race was even more phenomenal than I expected for a first-year event. The ENERGY LEVEL was high from beginning to end, runners and spectators. The course was super cool, starting through the urban streets, into the parks, back to the state house.

I think this was a great race!

In reading some of the reviews, it seems some people are venting and exaggerating a few of their own personal frustrations, but they are not representing majority opinions. Sorry for your experience - it was not at all like mine.

I would HIGHLY recommend this race!! It will only continue to get better and better!

"Pleased overall" (about: 2006)

11-50 previous marathons | 1 New Denver Marathon

The Good:
Organization
Finish area
Plenty of water and Gatorade
Police support to block streets

The not-so-good:
Hills
Double-loop in Wash Park
Mile markers and time on the course

Overall I am glad Denver finally has a marathon that is not an afterthought. However, I think it would be better to go out towards Wash Park first and run back to Cheesman and City Park on the way to the finish line. Make no mistake - no PR here. If you want one, run Chicago, which falls around the same time.

"Not bad for the first time" (about: 2006)

4-5 previous marathons
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 4

I've run marathons all over this country, big and small. I ran this marathon with my closest friend from college - it was her first. The course and support were GREAT. I love the medal at the end of the race and I also enjoy how they print your name on your number.

Three things that need improvement:
- The shirt looked like it was from a 5K race.... It's a marathon - runners run for the shirt.
- At the start of the race, add a few gates to get into the pack; I had to walk all the way to the end and force my way up into the group to get into a good spot.
- COWBELLS - The world needs FEWER cowbells. I was going to buy a Saturn before I found out they were the ones who provided the cowbells.
