"I will definitively return next year!" (about: 2006)

The whole race was beautifully organized. My wife and I throughly enjoyed the expo, especially because of the great speakers. The host hotel (Adam's Mark) is in a great location, very close to the start/finish line and there are two Starbucks located in the immeadiate area. The pasta dinner had a great selection and on race day the hotel started serving a cold breakfast bar (fruits, bagels, coffee, juice, etc.) at 4:00 a.m. The course had some hills, but nothing that really took the wind out of you. The course allowed you to see the runners that were either in front or behind you at many places, with only one turn where you had to do a sharp 180. The course was not boring at all, you run through several parks and past many landmarks in Denver. There were enough pockets of spectators along the course to give you some encouragement, but you also had the chance to just enjoy the peacefulness of running. Each aid station had water, gatorade, and a lot of volunteers, but next time I would like to see some fruit (bananas/oranges) at a couple of the aid stations. The pacers (3:30, 3:40, 3:50, 4:00, 4:15, 4:30, 5:00) were great! The weather was awesome this year with the start being in the mid 40's and sunny. My wife and I will be back next year.

"Plenty of Hills/Great Spectators" (about: 2006)

I didn't like this course. I've run several truly flat courses and this one does not qualify. There were plenty of hills. The website says it's a flat course and that is extremely misleading. All the loops were annoying, too. Traffic was not managed well and it was dangerous. However, the spectators were great. Our names were on our bibs, which was a nice touch and the volunteers cheered for us by name. The weather was warm.

"Finally a great race in Denver!!" (about: 2006)

4-5 previous marathons | 2 New Denver Marathons

Those folks who were putting on the "old" Denver Marathons should be ashamed of themselves. This is how it should be done. It is a great course, the organization was very good, and the spectators, while not as numerous as at other big-city marathons, were very enthusiastic and helpful.

My only real complaint: Hotdogs at the finish? Are you freakin' kidding me? I just ran 26 miles, and I need something much better than a hotdog.

Overall, a great racing expereince. I hope Denver will develop the reputation it deserves for having so many great athletes living here.

"Outstanding course and organization" (about: 2006)

Just as advertised, the course provides a scenic and fun excursion by many of Denver's landmarks and through beautiful city parks. From the expo through the post-race awards and entertainment, the organization was terrific. Spectators were enthusiastic and volunteers were plentiful. Hard to believe this was an inaugural event.

"FINALLY!!!!! DENVER HAS A GREAT MARATHON!!!" (about: 2006)

WOW! KUDOS TO THE DM TEAM!!!! I hope this is the start of a great yearly tradition. The course is fantastic - very well planned and diverse. I wasn't sure I would like the "out and back" portions, but it was great fun to cheer on runners on the other side on the road. The course design is great for spectators, too! The first third of the course running through LoDo was my favorite. A few more small "hills" than expected, but nothing major. Traffic control was the best I have seen at any marathon. Volunteers were AMAZING!!! VERY FRIENDLY AND ENTHUSIASTIC! Start/finish area was impressive for an inaugural run (beer and hot dogs were a nice touch!). Expo was small, but will grow. The race program was nice, too. Weather was PERFECT. Plan on running this again in 2007.

"Alright for the first time." (about: 2006)

2 previous marathons | 1 New Denver Marathon
COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 3  FANS: 3

The Denver Marathon was only my second marathon, but I felt that it could have been much better. The course layout was not the greatest because you kept running in circles and in one park you ran around it twice. Also the sponsor hotel did not do much to accommodate the runners. The goodie bag and medal were also kind of cheap. Overall, for the first time it was a good race but could definitely be improved.

What a marathon! Of the 85 marathons I have completed, in no other marathon have I seen snow-capped mountains against a deep, blue sky! Volunteers were outstanding, as were the shirts, medals, organization and the City of Denver.

"Great first effort -- this could be a classic." (about: 2006)

With a few tweaks and a good PR effort to convince people that running a marathon at altitude probably won't kill you, this race could have legs. Nice time of year (although the morning is chilly!) and beautiful course. More views, less Sante Fe Ave., and these guys could have a keeper. The few small complaints I have are outweighed my positive impressions.

Quick Comments:

Would like to see this happen:

* Different water cups
* Different colored bibs for the full and half marathoners
* A 7:00 a.m. start
* Fewer turns on the course

Thanks for a well organized marathon! Glad I made it to Denver, CO for my 38th state!

"Great race!" (about: 2006)

6-10 previous marathons | 1 New Denver Marathon
COURSE: 5  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 5

This race will be even better as the years pass. Great traffic-control at pretty much every intersection, great spectator support along the way. The last stretch in Washington Park was difficult; it felt like Groundhog Day over and over, but even with that, I think the race director and staff did a wonderful job of taking this on. Hydration was excellent. What I really missed were the after-the-race photos. Maybe next year? I was also concerned about the six-hour time limit; there are a lot of five-to-eight-hour folks, me included, that like to run these, and it would be nice if the time limit was extended. However, this may happen as the years go by. Overall, thank you to the director and staff for giving us all an opportunity to enjoy the city and get the medal!!
