"Wow! Big improvement over last year - great course" (about: 2006)

I ran this race last year and it had a lot of room for improvement. The organizers clearly took the comments to heart and made major improvements. I liked the course last year but this year's was even better. It was great that they split the full and half course and that they split the start times. Most of the full marathoners, even the slow ones, didn't have the half running over them. The canal was hot, but flat and fun. The team fixed the issues with water spots from last year and they were plentiful, well cared for by volunteers and frequent. The spectators were awesome and the course allowed spectators to cheer people on many times across the event without traffic issues. The police and volunteers were amazing, cheering us on throughout the race. This is a great first marathon course since it is mostly flat with just rolling hills. It was so well run; I can't wait to race it again next year. Congratulations to the organizers and keep it up next year.

Wow. I think every previous negative comment was corrected and turned into a positive for this year's run. The organizers obviously listened, cared, and made adjustments. How refreshing from events that just want your money. The Rochester Marathon is a 5-star event all the way around.

What a great marathon. Course scenery was awesome. Traffic control, marshals, fans, and aid stations were all great. Like night and day compared to the Buffalo Marathon. Look for participation to double next year when word gets out about this one. It is a must.

"I loved the canal and river trails" (about: 2006)

The organizers did a fantastic job in choosing this course. The run through Rochester, Pittsford and Fairport was very scenic. I really loved running along the canal path and the river path. The volunteers were great and everyone seemed to want to make our experience great.

The organizers took care of everything but running it for you. Traffic control was great; water, Gatorade and Gu stops were abundant; and the post-race party had lots of grub. I especially enjoyed the finish lap in the stadium. Hats off to whoever organized this marathon.

"Good Overall Experience" (about: 2006)

I ran this marathon 2 days ago and it was my first marathon experience. I got there about 45 min. before the race was scheduled to start. The race didn't begin until almost a quarter to 8 because we were waiting for Sri Chimnoy to show up and lead us in a meditation, which was odd and honestly took longer than it should have.

At first the course was lovely; it was pleasant and cool. I liked that it was a 3-mile loop course because I got to see my family a few times cheering me on, which kept my motivation high. The water stations were there every mile and stocked with electrolyte fluid, liquid amino acids, bananas, watermelon and the staff was super friendly.

The weather quickly took a turn for the worse when about 4 miles in it started to rain heavily and kept pounding for 2 and a half more hours. I could barely see more than a few feet ahead of me for a while and the track was completely flooded. You had no choice but to run through massive puddles, which were up to my ankles at parts. Never the less the staff stayed put and kept smiling.

I didn't know what to expect in terms of a the crowd but it did seem rather small but still enthusiastic and stuck it out for most of the horrific weather.

My only complaint is that they had no way of gauging how many laps around the loop we did. I know for a fact there were several that "finished" without doing the full distance.

I received many warm congratulations at the end and a nice medal as well to commemorate the experience. I would definitely recommend this to a first-time marathon runner and will probably run it again next year.

"Highly recommended" (about: 2005)

Considering 2005 was the inaugural version, I would say the Rochester Marathon has serious potential for becoming a top-flight event. This was my third marathon and I was extremely impressed. Race organization, course marshals, logistics, and the course itself were all superb. The spectator support was not as good as in NYC or Boston, but certainly significant and surprisingly enthusiastic for a city the size of Rochester. The course takes runners through some of the most interesting and beautiful neighborhoods in the area and includes a very welcome pancake-flat section along the canal. The finish was especially memorable - getting to run around Frontier Field while spectators watched from the stadium seats was great. Post-race goodies were superb and race support on the course was phenomenal. I will definitely be doing this race again next year and look forward to some of the new course changes!

"Date is too early" (about: 2005)

My 5th marathon. I nearly had my arm ripped off at the first water stop. As I reached for a cup, a half runner came flying through on his return trip and smashed into my arm. I hope they re-think the half for '06.

This was supposed to be an intermediate race before I try to B.Q. in '06. However, I bonked badly at this one. That's part of the reason I'm so negative. The humidity didn't help.

The date for this race is too early for me to do this again. I like the course, although it's hard at the end.

"Need some work for 2006" (about: 2005)

Expo should not be called an expo... it was lame. It didn't seem that the businesses were very supportive... not many spectators. Lots of traffic congestion. Water needs to be at every mile.

"Great experience overall!!" (about: 2005)

2 previous marathons | 1 Rochester Marathon

I ran the half-marathon, and was very pleased with everything overall.

However, a few minor items to improve on:
1) I never heard the announcers for the opening speech. I wasn't very far back from the start line, and suddenly the race started! Need better sound system.

2) On the return leg, I never saw a mile-marker after Park Ave. If they were there, then it was my fault for missing them. I was struggling at that point, and was looking for the markers for motivation.

3) The event received a lot of negative press from city business owners and residents in the local paper due to street closings, lack of event press, etc. I thought there was plenty of press leading up to the event, but these issues should be considered for '06.

Overall, a great event! THE FANS WERE AWESOME!! Looking forward to '06!
