"Okay race, don't think I'd do it again" (about: 2006)

I was so psyched to do this race. I trained for it as my second event with Team In Training. HOWEVER, I was sorely disappointed. The expo was really crummy- long lines for the 'girly pampering' they advertised (massages were way short, and I never made it to manicures). There was not a whole lot offered at the expo either. Niketown was a MADHOUSE and was way too hot. I had to leave b/c I was getting nauseus being in there. As for the race itself, it was VERY poorly run. The start was TERRIBLE. I was tripping over walkers for the first 3 miles!! (No offense walkers!) They need to start it in waves! Also, there were multiple miles without mile markers, too few aid stations, too few port-a-potties, and not enough signage to point out where the halfers were distinguished from the whole marathoners. As for the hills, I remember the website advertising 'no cable car hills...'. Well, just because a cablecar doesn't actually go up that hill doesn't mean that there are no hills comparable to the cablecar ones. Hills are my strong point, but there were quite a few runners in my training group that were having to walk a majority of the way up. As for positives, the necklaces are beautiful, finishers shirts were really fun (drifit), and there was a lot of food and fun at the finish area. Overall, it was a senic run(for the first half.. the second half stunk). It could have been WAY better organized though.. go for an Elite racing event for your first experience with the marathon though...

"Loved it" (about: 2006)

This is the second year I have done this race and I love it. I really liked the finisher shirt saying "Ran like a girl" - it is the Nike women's marathon, and "Run like a girl" has been the major tag line for it. The only fault that I have with the race is that the expo is really weak.

"I LOVED IT!!" (about: 2005)

I loved it. I thought the entire event was extrememly well organized. I plan to spend the weekend in the city at next year's race to benefit from all that is offered.

And, after reading someone's comments about feeling lonely if you're not with Team in Training, I say join TNT! I ran with them this year (and my prior 1/2 marathon) and they're an amazing group to train with. And, if you chose not to, then be proud of what they have accomplished in their fundraising and training efforts. Everyone is running for the same reason. This race is here to raise money for Leukemia and other blood cancers.

My one thought is that it would be nice to have the slower walkers stay to one side. I found myself skipping around some and fear tripping.

I loved most of the course (don't like running thru residential, loved the beauty, hated the hills, and loved the fog over and around the gg bridge. I know that everyone running with a camera and stopping in front of people to take pictures were able to leave with great shots!

"Beautiful and challenging" (General Comments)

2 previous marathons | 1 Nike 26.2 = Nike Women's Marathon
COURSE: 4  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 3

I ran my first marathon last year with TNT; this year my sister and I tried this race out on our own. I felt last year that other TNT chapters were only cheering for their own teammates, and this race was worse in that I felt almost snubbed by the TNTers. After the half-marathoners split off there were even fewer non-TNT people.

Besides that, the course is really beautiful. Even challenging hill training in Alaska didn't make the hills any easier. But we were never lacking in aid stations and roadside entertainment. It was overall a fun experience and the necklace this year is cute.

"difficult course but fun race" (about: 2006)

It was my first marathon and I had a great time and would do it again. I loved the course, weather was great, plenty of cheerleaders. Overall, my run went pretty smoothly from starting line to shuttle buses. It seemed like most stations were well stocked and frequent but there did seem to be a water station missing around Lake Merced.

I was a little bummed that my husband had to take the spectator shuttle to the finish between 7:30 & 8:30 a.m. but the course was laid out so he could walk to different points to cheer me on so it worked out OK. I loved the necklace and cute guys handing them out. I agree with the others - there was nothing at the Expo!!! I had driven down the day before to attend and it was a waste of time.

"Beautiful but hilly, feel the woman power." (about: 2006)

First Marathon
COURSE: 3  ORGANIZATION: 5  FANS: 3

A huge number of people and well organized consider the numbers. I only did the Half-marathon and was very glad I did because it got pretty tough towards the end with the hills. I wish the hill were in the beginning of the race when I was fresh -- but if we ran in that direction we'd be running into the sun which would be bad too.

With regard to the men it was billed as a woman's race and I really like that part of it because it didn't feel competitive, but supportive. But I heard one of the coaches tell a man as he got towards the finish that they had different shirts for the men that did not say 'ran like a girl'.

It seems they had more toilets at the end. Maybe next year you can distribute some of those at the first three or four stops on the course.

"Well-run race; needs to be more friendly to men" (about: 2006)

50+ previous marathons | 2 Nike 26.2 = Nike Women's Marathons

This is the second time I ran this race. As last year's version, it was very well organized with no major problems. Just one observation: besides the famous necklace, this year's finishers get a shirt that says, "Ran like a girl," which I can't imagine any straight men would want to wear. As a married woman, I say let's be a little nicer to these good men who join us in the race.

This was my first marathon and didn't know what to expect. I ran it with TNT, which is an amazing experience in itself. I was a bit nervous about the hills. The course turned out to be very pretty, although a bit foggy and I could not see the San Fancisco Bridge. The mile markers were off at mile 5 and 6, which was a bit nerve racking for me because I was trying to figure out my pace per mile. The spectators were great in spots and scarce is others (neighborhoods). It was so nice to run the last couple miles listening to the waves crash below. The hills turned out to be not so bad. You just have to train on hills. The expo absolutely sucked.

"It Was An Okay Race for San Francisco" (about: 2005)

3 previous marathons | 1 Nike 26.2 = Nike Women's Marathon

Well, as I saw someone say, be prepared to be in the minority if you are not with TNT. But you'll be in an even smaller minority if you are a MALE and not a TNT member. Being of the few guys in the race was fun - I have few complaints about it. The hills are ridiculously hard, even for a guy who is used to running San Francisco's hills. I can tell where people started feeling the pain at one specific hill in the Seacliff area. Expo totally sucked; not many useful things to do there, and you can't really get last-minute prep ideas like other expos. And the oxygen bar at one point? Skip that. The buses back were another point of contention. Long lines if you are one of the later finishers.

Other than that, people are great and the water stops were very well stocked.
