(The Times) Mohobo Sello won the mens race in 2:18.51 and Mamarolla Tjoke won in the womens Soweto Marathon in 2:47.57 The last time a South African won the race was in 2001, when Mluleki Nobanda broke the tape. Yesterday, South Africas Olympic marathon champion from the 1996 games in Atlanta, Josiah Thugwane, finished in the top 10. Sello, 28, broke away from the leading runners to cross the finish line at the Elkha stadium only a few minutes outside the course record. His time of 2hr 18min 51sec was slightly slower than the course record of 2:17:43 set in 2003. It was the Lesotho runners biggest pay day. Tjoke, who was recently involved in a stabbing incident with a room-mate, chalked-up her hat-trick of wins (2005, 2006 and 2007) when she beat off a strong challenge from Zimbabwean Samukeliso Moyo to win in 2:47:57. | ||
