Lucas Rotich of Kenya edged Japan's Hisanori Kitajima by just five seconds to win the Lake Biwa Marathon on Sunday. Rotich took over the lead at to the 30-kilometer (19-mile) mark and clocked a time of 2 hours, 9 minutes, 11 seconds.

   Qatar's Shami wins Lake Biwa Marathon ahead of Ertirea's Yared Asmerom (International Herald Tribune)
Eritrea's Yared Asmerom surged late in the race but could not hold onto Qatar's Shami who won by 11 seconds with a time of 2 hours 8 minutes and 23 seconds. Third place went to Japan's Satoshi Osaki with a time of 2:08:36.

Mubarak Shami of Qatar won the 2008 Lake Biwa Marathon in 2:08:23 edging out Eritrean Yared Asmeron at the 36K mark. Many Japanese were also excited about the race within a race as Lake Biwa Marathon was the last men's qualifier for Japan's Olympic team. Satoshi Osaki who finished first Japanese in 2:08:40. The Japanese team will be announced on March 10th.

   Osaki makes the grade / All but earns ticket to Beijing with 3rd place at Biwa behind Shami, Asmeron (Daily Yomiuri Online)
The 2008 Lake Biwa Marathon saw Kenyan born Qatari Mubarak Hassan Shami, the silver medalist at the 2007 IAAF World Championships in Osaka, win in a 2:08:23. Yared Asmeron was runner up in 2:08:34 and Satoshi Osaki was third in 2:08:36. Osaki, a Japanese Olympic Team hopeful, set a personal best and may have secured himself a spot on the team. Lake Biwa Marathon was the final qualifying race for the Japanese Olympic Team.

   Japanese to secure final Olympic berth at Lake Biwa Marathon (IAAF)
The 2008 Lake Biwa marathon, the oldest continuous marathon in Japan, will see many 2:07 marathoners in its roster of elites. Dmytro Baranovsky, with 2:07:15 at the 2006 Fukuoka Marathon, Mubarak Hassan Shami with a 2:07:19 at the 2007 Paris Marathon, and Jose Rios with 2:07:42 at the 2004 Lake Biwa Marathon. Lake Biwa will be the final race for the Japanese men to qualify for the Olympic marathon team spot. Japanese elites Atsushi Sato, Arata Fujiwara Tsuyoshi Ogata, and Satoshi Osaki will battle it out for the honor to run for Japan.

Rios, gunning for his third Lake Biwa title and second in a row, said he will aim at compatriot Antonio Pena's course record. The 30-year-old Rios set his personal best of 2 hours 7 minutes 42 seconds in winning the 2004 Lake Biwa race, just eight seconds off Pena's mark set in 2001.

Japhet Kosgei (Kenya) won Japan's Lake Biwa marathon this weekend in 2 hours, 7 minutes, 39 seconds. He fended off a challenge from Antonio Pena (Spain) in the last two kilometres of the race. Australia's Lee Troop came in seventh, and was able to surpass the 2:10 barrier with 2:9:49, which has qualified him for the World Championships in Paris later on this year.

   Japhet Kosgei Just Short of Course Record in Lake Biwa Marathon (International Association of Athletics Federations)
Japhet Kosgei became the first Kenyan to win the oldest Marathon in Japan in this weekend's Lake Biwa Marathon. His time was 2:7:39, which was still not enough to break course record of 2:7:34 (only five seconds faster) set by Antonio Pena of Spain two years ago. The race was tight all the way throughout, and the weather couldn't have been better.
 
   Kosgei Wins Lake Biwa Marathon (Agence France-Presse; Nando Media)
Japhet Kosgei of Kenya won the Lake Biwa Marathon in 2 hours, 7 minutes and 39 seconds. He surged ahead of Antonio Pena of Spain in the last two kilometers of the race. Kosgei hopes to be selected to run for Kenya in the Paris World Championships, but he is keenly aware of the amount of time between now and August, and is keeping his fingers crossed.

There is an added pressure for those Japanese runners preparing for this weekend's Lake Biwa Marathon, because anyone who breaks the 2:10 mark will automatically be selected for the Paris World Championships.
