Paul Kirui defeated a field of more than 6,500 to win yesterday's Amsterdam marathon in 2 hours 7 munites and 50 seconds Local runner Marion Wood of Abroath, won top prize in the women's over-50 age group with a time of 3 hours and 3 minutes as the top British runners with fifteenth place overall.

Paul Kirui and Lydia Cheromei of Kenyan ruled the thirty third edition of the ING Amsterdam Marathon with victories in the men’s and women’s races. Kirui, 28, who won the 2004 World Half Marathon title, ran a tactical race in windy conditions to cut the tape first in 2:07.51.

It was a happy day for the ING Amsterdam marathon. In the 28th edition of the event the Dutch capital got not only a new course record by William Kipsang's winning time of 2:06:39 but also a new Dutch men’s record on the marathon by Kamiel Maase.

Romania's Alina Tecuta's drug tests resulted positive after her fifth place Amsterdam Marathon victory in October. A 2-year ban has been put onto her future races, as it was made apparent by the Romanian Athletics Federation, who found the 31-year old Tecuta had been taking small doses of illegal, anabolic steroids.

   Gete Wami's Marathon debut at the Amsterdam Marathon leads to Ethiopian and course record in Amsterdam (International Association of Athletics Federations)
Gete Wami won the women’s race in 2.22.19, setting an Ethiopian and course record, as well. In the men’s race, Benjamin Kimutai Kosgei clocked 2.07.26, after making a late surge to catch and pass the leading group. This win for Gete Wami comes dispite the fact that she only made the decision to run 10 days before on the advice of her husband, Geteneh Tessema, who works for Jos Hermens’ Global Sport Communication agency, and who saw his own promising career as a long distance runner broken off by a very serious road accident.
