The thirty-fourth edition of the Cowtown Marathon featured nearly 9,000 runners and one unregistered runner tried to steal the show by racing the marathon with an unauthorized bib. He was quickly disqualified and Kolin Styles was declared the winner with a time of 2 hours 37 minutes and 53 seconds.

Keith Pierce, coach of three different sports at Krum High School, is aiming to win his third consecutive Cowtown Marathon on February 28th. Pierce won the 2007 race by 12 minutes, and set a personal record of 2:23:07 at his last marathon, the Steamtown Marathon in October. Pierce would become the second ever three-time winner of the Cowtown Marathon.

The new ChronoTrack chip which is waterproof, disposable and attached to he runner's bibs will become more frequently used at races in Texas. Raul Najera's Austin-based Run Far timing system has tested ChronoTrack since July. The commonly used ChampionChip can be a hassle for race organizers to distribute and collect.

   Wind near end makes Cowtown no walk in park (The Star-Telegram)
The 2008 Cowtown Marathon saw high winds along the final miles of the race which caused the men's marathon leader Keith Pierce to walk before winning his second title. It also caused a shake-up in the lead pack of the women's marathon which was won by Riva Graeme who had given birth six months prior.

Doctor Riva Graeme had her third win at the 2008 Cowtown Marathon in 3:08:29. Graeme who won in 2000 and 2002 had not run the distance in four years. Also of note, Graeme just gave birth six months ago.

   It could be the race of the decades: the octogenerians (Star Telegram)
A race of the octogenerians has developed for the 2008 Cowtown Marathon. The players are Don McNelly, 87, from Rochester, N.Y. with more than 700 marathons under his belt and has been running for almost forty years versus local favorite Gene Brock, 80, from Arlington has thirty years of running experience. McNelly and Brock hope to finish in less than six hours. McNelly finished in 5:30:33 at the Austin Marathon last weekend. Cowtown organizers created a new 80-and-up age group for the two runners. Because McNelly and Brock are the only two entrants, only one will go home with the 80-plus medal.

   Thirty Cowtown Marathons, and one man has run them all (Dallas Morning News)
Jim Gilliland said the friendships cultivated have been the highlight of his tenure as he prepares for the Cowtown Marathon's thirtieth anniversary. Gilliland has served as race director since the first Fort Worth Cowtown Marathon in February 1979. He has seen the race grow from 210 to over 13,000 runners.
