First the first time in 25 years, the St. George Marathon had to start in rain and a soggy course. Southern Utah University runner Mark Currell broke away from the pack at about seven miles to cruise to the five-minute margin of victory over former BYU runner Nick McCombs in 2 hours, 28 minutes, 40 seconds. Christina Gingras, who ran nearly 6 minutes faster than her race last year, won the women's marathon in 2 hours 49 minutes and 50 seconds.

   Teacher Leads Start to Finish in St. George (Utah) Marathon (Salt Lake Tribune)
Linda Huyck is a high school teacher by trade and a cross country coach by choice. Saturday, she gave her team a lesson on how to win the St. George Marathon -- don't let anybody pass you. The 28-year-old Olympia, Wash., native led the women's field from the start and finished in 2 hours, 51 minutes, 2 seconds. She finished almost two minutes ahead of two-time St. George Marathon winner Cheryl Harper of Orem, who finished in 2:52:55. Elycse Allphin, 28, of Lindon, was third in 2:54:32. The men's winner was 28-year-old Keiichi Matsuzaki of Japan. He used a strong kick to pull away from runner-up David Halferty of Topeka, Kan., and third-place runner Tim Jones of Loveland, Colo. Matsuzaki, who came in fifth last year, finished in a personal best 2:21:06 to 2:24:08 for Halferty and 2:24:44 for two-time winner Jones. Fedotov's winning time of 2 hours, 12 minute, 40 seconds beat runner-up Ezael Tlhobo of South Africa by a mere three seconds. Just 13 seconds separated the first six placers in the tightest group finish in the event's 19-year history.
