(Democrat and Chronicle) 71-year old Norm Frank finished Hunstville, Alabama's Rocket City Marathon in 5:39 this weekend, adding the 800th race to the list completed in his lifetime. Frank has been running marathons since 1967, and is now number three in the world for his age group.

Naumova easily outdistanced fellow Russian Elvira Kolpakova, 29, who finished in 2:46:38 and placed second for the second straight year.

In 1995, when many people were trying to qualify for the 100th Boston Marathon, Hal Higdon wrote a story for Runner's World magazine describing what he considered the 10 fastest courses in America. The Rocket City course was one of them.
One World junior record (19-year-old Paul Gompers ran 2:15:28 in 1983), one American masters record (40-year-old Kenneth Judson ran 2:17:01 in 1990) and five American single-age records have been established here.

Harvest's Saunders sets new standard

Barbara Saunders of Harvest has been spotlighted at Huntsville's annual marathon a few times over the years. After all, Saturday was the seventh time in nine Rocket City marathons that she has been the top local female finisher.
