Last year's winner, Todd Nott, ran 2:51:31, 35 minutes behind the event record and slower than six former women champions. Meanwhile, only one woman has broken three hours since 1995.

Race Director Susie Smisek reported that three competitors who began the Omaha Marathon one hour earlier than the main group told race officials that they saw an escaped tiger cub as they entered the Henry Doorly Zoo portion of the run. The Marathon was then re-routed at the last minute to avoid the zoo.
